podcastplayeranditsbrandnewlookandsomanyotherthings
thathavehappened.Alotofthathappenednotjustbecauseofmy
team,butbecauseofthegoalsthatwesetandhowweachieved
themwhichiswhatIwantedtotalkaboutwithyouinthisepisode
todaywithmygoalandthatisgoal-setting.
Heactuallyhasacourse,it’saprettyfamouscoursethathascome
outthelastthreeyearsinarowaroundthistimeofyear.It’scalled

justexploding.I’dlovetojusthaveyousharewiththeaudience
whatyou’vebeenuptolatelyandwheredidthissuddenrushof
amazingproductsandstuffundertheimagebrandcomefrom?
Michael: I’vereallybeentransitioningfrombeingasolopreneur,thenwitha
smallteam,andnowtodaywe’vegot23full-timeemployees.
Pat: Wow.
Michael: Aswellasalotofkeycontractorsthatworkwithusandthe
companyhasdoubledeveryyearsinceIstartedin2011.That’sbeen
amazingtowatchbecausewhatit’sallowedmetodoistogetmore
andmorenarrowlyfocusedonthehandfulofthingsthatIdowell.
Idon’thavetodabbleatallthethingsthatIdon’tdosowell.Asa
resultofthatI’vebeenabletojustreallyfocusoncreatingcontent
anddeliveringthatcontent.
ThispastsummerIcreatedanewproductivitycoursewhichwe
launched.Itwasaseven-figurelaunchforaproductcalledFree
toFocusanditwasreallymyconvictionthatproductivityisnotso
muchaboutgettingmoredone,butgettingtherightthingsdone.
Particularlytheabilityasentrepreneurstocreatealifewherewe
canhavemorefreedom,thefreedomtoreallyfocusonthework
thatmatters,thefreedomtoreallybepresentwiththepeople
welovemostandthefreedomtobespontaneous,sothatwe
haveenoughmargininourlivesthat…Formewhenmykidsor
mygrandkidsdropbyIcanstopwhatI’mdoingbecauseI’vegot
thatmargin.It’sfuntosharethatwithpeopleandjustseethe
transformation.
Iknowthisistrueforyou,butmyfavoritethingisgettingthose
emailsorthosevideotestimonialsfrompeoplewhojusthada
radicaltransformationasaresultofcontentthatwe’vebeenableto
produce.It’sbeenreallyfunformetobeabletoproducecontent
inthecontextoftheteam,sothatIdon’thavetodoeverythinglike
Iusedtohavetodoit.I’vegotpeoplethatcanhandletheresearch

Pat: Nowwhenyouwerestartingoutasanentrepreneur,evenrecently,
doyoufeelwithFreetoFocuswereaddressingyourearlierself?
Isthatsomethingyoustrugglewithwithtryingtoprioritizeand
figureoutwhattodoandyoufeltsometimesmaybethatyouwere
workingonthingsthatweren’tmatterful,oristhissomethingyou’ve
alwaysbeenanexpertat?
Michael: It’ssomethingI’vedefinitelyalwayshadaninterestinbecauseon
theStrengthsFindersI’manachiever.WhatthatmeansisthatI
lovecheckingoffboxes,Ilikeaccomplishingnewbiggergoals,but
theproblemisisthatunbridledthatcouldjustbasicallytakeover
yourlife.WhatIdidn’tdosowellearlyinmycareerishavework-life
balance.Ireallysacrificedmyhealthandmyfamily,thankfullynot
toalevelwhereitwastragic.Certainlywhereitwasalevelwhere
therewasanimpactbecauseIwaspursuingmycareerjustgetting
productive,soIcoulddomoreandmoreanddoitfasterandfaster
andneverstoppingtoaskthebiggerquestionofwhatkindoflifedo
Iwant.Whereisthisallgoing?I’minthisforthelonggameandIwant
toleavealegacy.Thattakessomeintentionandsomeplanning.
Pat: Right,andthatgoesverymuchinalignmentwiththerecentbook
thatyouhadco-authoredcalledLivingForwardwhichisgreat.
Michael: Thankyou.
Pat: IhaveanumberofcopiesthatI’vegivenoutforfreetomy
audienceandtheyjustarelovingit.Everythingthatyoudoandyou
touchseemstoreallyhaveamassiveimpactonpeople’slives.I’d

posts,butthere’salotofdifferencebetweencreatingapodcastor
ablogandcreatingacoursewhichasyouknowbecauseyou’ve
createdthemit’sanall-consumingthingwhereyou’remakinga
hugeinvestmentoftimeandmoneyandeffort.
I’mlookingattheblogpoststhatreallyresonate.Iwatchtheemail
thatcomesin.Wegethundredsofmessagesadaywherepeople
arewritinginandtheyaskacertainnumberofquestions.Justwhat
peoplearesayingandwhatthey’relookingtomefor,soIthinkif…
MyfriendDanMillersaysthatifyougetthesamequestionabouttwo
orthreetimesyouneedtoconsidercreatingaproductaboutit.Idoit
alittlemorethantwoorthreetimes,butifwe’regettingthatquestion
overandoveragainlikeproductivityIrealize–andthosepostsare
alwayssomeofmyhottestposts,Iknewthatthatwasabigarea.
Thenwewentfromtheretoasurveyandsowedoasurveyevery
yearonmyblog.Oneofthethingsthatweaskaboutwaswegave
himseveraltopicsandsaidifIcouldcreateacourseforyouthat
wouldmeetapressingneedthatyouhavewhatwoulditbe?We
gavehimseveralexamples.Forthelastyearproductivity’salways
beenatthetop.
Pat: Ilovethat,soyou’reliterallytakingtheguessworkoutofitandyou’re
havingyourownaudiencetellyouexactlywhattheyneedanyway.
Michael: Yeah,totally,andoneofthethingsIdidwiththecourse,Iforgot
aboutthis,butthiswillbeimportantforyouraudienceisthatI
createdaFacebookgrouparoundproductivity.Ithoughtthiswill
bethebetagroupandI’lltestthecontent.Wedideverything.We
testedtheoutline,wetestedthebasicconceptualmodelsthatwe
usedinsidethecourse,wetestedthetitle,wetestedthedesign,
theart,andallthat.Wehadover12,000peopleinthatgroup.

soldthecourseforhalfpriceandwelimitedtheinvolvementto300
peopleandwhatwewantedwastheirfeedback.Thenwecreated
anotherFacebookgroupwherethosepeoplewereabletogiveus
veryspecificfeedbackandthenwerecreatedthecourseinAugust
andthenre-launcheditinSeptember.

Pat: Great.DidyouhaveanyissueswithusingFacebooktocommand
andallowthediscussionstohappenthewayyouwantedthemtoor
wasthatgoodenoughforwhatyouneededatthetime?
Michael: Ithinkitwasgoodenough.ThethingIloveaboutFacebookisit
happensinthecontextofwhatpeoplearealreadydoing.You’re
notaskingthemtogotoanothersitewheretheyhavetolearnthe
protocol,theyknowFacebook.Iwouldsaythebadpartaboutit
wasIreallyintendedthatbetagroup,thatfirstgroup,tobeabout
1,000people.Ididn’tknowthedifferencebetweenaprivate
FacebookgroupandasecretFacebookgroup.Anybodythatwas
searchingforproductivitythatgroupwouldcomeupandwehad
allkindsofpeoplejoiningit.IthinkIwouldlimititalittlebitmore
becausewegotpeoplethatreallyweren’tpartofthedemographic
thatwereinthere,thatweren’twillingtopaywhatIeventually
chargedforthecourse.
Pat: IbelieveandcorrectmeifI’mwrong,privatemeanspeople
knowthatthatgroupexists,buttheycan’tgetaccesstoitunless
somebodyweretogetinvitedorgetacceptedintoitversus…

amonkeysurvey.Oneofthethingsthatwetestedforiswesaid
look…Oroneofthequestionsweaskedwaswouldyoubewilling,
ifyouwereconvincedthatthisprogramcouldsaveyou10to20
hoursaweek,wouldyoubewillingtopay$500ormore?The
peoplethatsaidnothentheyweren’tinthemarket.Peoplethat
saidyeswereinthemarket,butonceitgotintoFacebooksearch
thenanybodycoulddoit.
Pat: IrememberseeingaheadlinethatyouhadpostedonFacebooka
whilebackandIthinkatweetortwofromit.Itwasreallyintriguing
becausetheheadlinewassomethingtothelikesoffiveproductivity
tipswhichwe’reautomaticallydrawntotheproductivitytipsinthe
firstplace,butthenhere’sthekicker,fiveproductivitytipsthatare
actuallymakingyoulesseffectiveormakingyouworkslowlyor
slower.Thatwasreallyinterestingtome.Couldyoushareoneor
twoofthosethingswithus?Ithinkthat’dbecompletelyhelpful
beforewegetintothemeatofgoal-setting.
Michael: Yeah,youbet.Yeah,itwasactuallyawebinarIdidwhereIdid
about10ofthoseandoneofthemissometimeswe’reencouraged
tosleepless.Thatwecouldactuallyusethattime,getupearlier,
usethattimetowriteabookoraccomplishsomethingthatwe
reallywantedtoaccomplish.Infact,whenIwastheCEOofThomas
NelsonPublisherswepublishedabook.I’mnotproudofthis,but
wepublishedabookwherethewomanadvocatedthatyoucould

saysthat’stheexactoppositeofwhatyouneedtodo.Whenyou’re
tiredyou’relessfocusedandyou’re,therefore,lessproductive.
Ifyouthinkaboutit,whenyou’rereadinglateatnightandyoufind
yourselfhavingtoreadthatsameparagraphoverandoveragain
becauseyoujustdon’thavethefocusandyou’retired.Sometimes
justagoodnight’ssleepwillmakeyoumoreproductiveandfocused.
Anotherthing,too,that…Anothertipisthatsometimeswe’retold
weneedtowriteeverythingdownweneedtodofortheday.
OneofthethingsthatI’vereallyfoundthat’shelpedmeis
somethingIcallMyBigThree.ForeverydayIhavethreeandonly
threetasksthatIhavetodo,butthey’reimportant.They’rethings
thatarereallyimportant,they’renotthetrivialstuff.Idohavea
startuproutinewhenIgettotheofficeandIhaveashutdown
routineattheendofthedaywhereIhandlethingslikeemail.That
doesn’treallygoonmytodolist,butwhatIdohaveonmytodolist
arethethreethingsthat’llreallymovetheneedle.IfigureifIcando
threethingsadayandIcandothatconsistentlyfivedaysaweek
overthecourseofayearandaccomplishthosethings,750things
orso,that’sagoodyear.
Pat: Yeah,absolutely.Doyoufigureoutwhatthosethreethingsare
thedaypriororaweekaheadofschedule?Whendoesthatcome
intoplay?
Michael: IusuallydoitthenightbeforeandI’llhavethingsthat’llshowup
thatmaybeIputareminderonbecausetheyhavetobedonetoday
likegottofilemyincometaxesorwhatever,theyhavetobedone
today.

andphysicalexercisewhereyoufeelyou’relosinghoursbecause
you’renotworkingandnotdoingthesethingstogetaheadinyour
business,butitactuallycomesbackandhelpsyououtevenbetter
afteryouaccomplishthosethings.
Michael: Sotrueandjustbackonthelistthing.IwanttoshareatipthatIgot
fromDanSullivanwho’ssomebodyIreallyadmireandhesaidso
manypeoplearesettingupagamethattheycan’twin.They’vegot
thislongtodolistwhentheystarttheday,nowaythey’regoingto
getthemalldone,sotheygettotheendofthedayandthey’vegot
lesscheckedoffthantheyhaveleft.Theyjustfeellikeafailure.You
wakeupoverwhelmed,yougotobeddefeated,andyou’resetting
yourselfupforagamethatyoucan’twin.Ontheotherhandifyou
dothethreethingsthatyou’reactuallygoingtodotoday,thebig
things,thethreethings,that’sagameyoucouldwinandyoucould
putyourheadonthepillowatnightandfeelgreatthatyougotthe
importantthingsdone.

Michael: Yeah.
Pat: Nowweareapproachingthenewyearanditjustseemslikeitwas
yesterdaythatIwasplanningout2016andherewearemoving
into2017already.Ithinkgoal-settingandaccomplishingthingsthat
we’vealwayswantedtodoisonpeople’sminds.Wheredopeople
startwiththis?Ithinkthisisabigthing.Alotofpeoplehaveatonof
goalsandhowdoyouknowwhichonestopickintothenewyear?
Ithinkalotofpeoplesufferfromgoalfatigue,goaloverwhelm
andevenjustwhentheystartthinkingaboutwhattheywantto
accomplishknowingthatthere’sallthisstuffalreadyhappeningin
theyear.Wheredoweevenstartwithanyofthat?
Michael: Yeah,Ithinkwehavetostartintherealmofpossibilitywherewe
thinkaboutwhatcouldwedothisnextyear.Ifwereallywanted

tomakethisnextyearourbestyeareverwhatwouldhavetobe
truebythetimewegetto12/31/2017?Whatwouldhavetobetrue,
whatwouldhavetohavehappenedthislastyearforittobeagreat
year?Ithinksometimeswe’resodefeatedbeforewestart.Maybe
wedidn’taccomplishthegoalsthatwereallywantedtoaccomplish.
Ithinkwehavetoremindourselvesthatthisnextyearislikeablank
canvas.Nothing’sbeendone.It’swideopen.Wecanpaintitany
colorwewant.
Ithinkthatwesometimeshavetogetpastthelimitingbeliefsthat
holdusback.Ithinkconfrontingthoselimitingbeliefsisareally
importantexerciseandoneofthethingsIdoinmycourseishelp
peopleconfrontwhatarethelimitingbeliefsthataremakingthem
thinkthatcertainthingsaren’tpossible.Idobelievethataswe’re
thinkingaboutthisnextyear,Ithinkit’simportanttothinkaboutthe
totalityofourlife,sothatallofourgoalsjustaren’tbusinessgoals.
WhereitreallygetsexcitedtomeiswhenIthinkaboutwhatcould
Ireallyaccomplishinmyhealththisnextyearorinmyrelationship
withmywife.I’vebeenmarriedfor38yearsandit’sourgoalalways
totakeourrelationshiptothenextlevelinthenextyear.Howcan
wecontinuetobuildonwhatwe’vealreadygottomakeiteven
betterthisnextyear?Thinkingaboutthetotalityofyourlifeisreally
importantaswell.Thatstartsgettingmejazzedandexcitedabout
thepossibilityofwhatcouldhappen.
Pat: Whataresomeofthosecommonlimitingbeliefsthatyou’refinding
fromyourstudentsinyourcourse?Arethereanycommononesthat
aremoreuniversal?
Michael: Yeah,Ithinksomeofthemarejust…Thelimitationsthathappen
aroundtheirfailures.SomebodymaythinkIcan’tloseweight
becauseI’mjustabig-bonedpersonorsomestorythatthey’re
tellingthemselvesabouttheirweight,I’mjustdestinedtobeheavy.
OrI’mjustnotsomebodythat’samorningperson.Igetthatthere
arecircadianrhythmsandthere’salotofotherthingsthatinfluence
that,butthosealsocouldbechoices.

IhaveawholeblogpostthatI’vewrittenonhowtobecomea
morningpersonandthere’ssomethingsyoucoulddo.Ifyouwant
todoit,youdon’thavetochoosetodoit.Ifyouwanttodoityou
candothat.Ormaybeit’salimitingbeliefaroundmoney,I’mjust
notverygoodwithmoney,I’veneverbeenabletoaccumulateitor
Ican’tseemtomakeanymoreorI’mstuckinmycareer.Anytime
youstartinhibitingyourfreedomorpullingyourselfbackfromwhat
couldbepossiblethere’sagoodchancethatyou’rerunningup
againstalimitingbeliefthat’sjustinyourhead.
I’lltellyouastory,Iusedtohavethisdog,hisnamewasNelson
andweputaninvisiblefenceinouryardbecausewedidn’thave
…Wehavenowarealfence,butatthatpointwedidn’thaveareal
fenceandIdidn’twanthimtorunoutontothestreetandgetkilled
becauseweliveinaverybusydowntownneighborhood.Wedid
theinvisiblefenceandIwasalittlebitnervousaboutit,butwe
trainedhimovertimeandliterallywhenhewouldapproachthe
fencehewouldjustgetalittlevibration.Firstitwasavibrationand
asoundandthenitjustbecomesavibration.Totallyhumane,it
doesn’tdoanythingnegative,buthewouldbackoffassoonashe
gotthatvibration.Itgotsointenseandhewassowell-trainedthat
Iwouldhavemygrandkidsstandontheothersideoftheinvisible
fenceandtrytocalltohimwithtreatsandhestillwouldn’tcome.
Nowhere’sthequestion,wherewasthefencebecauseweturned
offtheinvisiblefenceandhestillwouldn’tcomeacross.
Pat: Itwasinhishead.
Michael: Wherewasthebarrier?Itwasinhishead.Thathappenstousona
lotofdifferentissueswherewehavethisbarrierinourheadthat’s
holdingusbackandthat’swhatwe’vegottoconfrontifwe’regoing
tohaveagreatyearandifwe’regoingtoanewlevelinthevarious
areasofourlife.
Pat: It’ssointeresting,everytimeIapproachanewyearIsetnewgoals
formyself.Ihappentoaccomplishalotofthemwhichisgreatandit
happensformanydifferentreasons,buttheonethingIalwayslook

ofitasthreedifferentzones.Alotofpeoplewanttosetagoalin
thecomfortzone.It’sjustanincrementalimprovementinsome
areaandtheyknowtheyabsolutelycanslamdunkit.Here’sthe
problemwiththat.Itdoesn’tcreateanygrowthanditdoesn’tcreate
anyexcitement.Theresearchthatwe’vegatheredshowsthatyou
actuallyhavelessofachanceofaccomplishingthosegoalsthatare
incrementalandlocatedinsidethecomfortzone,sothat’szoneone.
Zonetwoisthediscomfortzone.That’swhereitstretchesyouwhere
it’salittlebitbeyondwhatyouthinkmightbepossible.Youmayfeel
andIthinkthesearethemarkersinthediscomfortzoneandthisis
whytheycallitthediscomfortzone.Youmayfeelsomefear,you
mayfeelsomeuncertainty,youdon’tknowexactlyhowyou’regoing
toaccomplishit.Youmayfeelsomedoubt,you’renotsureyougot
whatittakestoactuallyaccomplishit.Thosearegreatmarkers.
Whenyoustartfeelingthatyouknowyou’resquareinthemiddle

bestsellerlist.Thequestionisdoesthatmeanthatgoal-settingjust
doesn’twork.Yousetagoal,youworkedhard,youdidn’tachieve
it,doyoujustthrowupyourhands?No,becausehere’swhy.We
wouldn’thavehittheUSATodaybestsellerlist,northeWallStreet
Journalbestsellerlistifweweren’tshootingforTheNewYork
Timesbestsellerlist.
That’sanotoriousthingwithTheNewYorkTimeslist,too,asto
whytheyputsomebooksonthelistandotherstheydon’tbecause
Iknowbasedonthebookscannumberswehadthenumbers.We

there’sapartofitthatIcanonlydointheprivacyofmyownoffice
whereI’mworkingonit,butIloveworkingonateambecause
withoutthatteamthecoursewouldn’thaveturnedoutaswellasit
didandbeenassuccessfulasitwas.

Michael: Yeah,I’mabigbelieverinbringingoutsideresources.Peopledon’t
dothis.Theystrugglewithproblemsforyears,amarriagethatthey
don’tenjoy,orparentingproblemsthatthey’restrugglingwith,or
weightloss,orstrengthtraining,oranyofthat.I’lljustgiveanother
examplefrommyownlife.ForseveralyearsIhadstrengthtraining
asagoal.IwasveryspecificaboutwhatIwantedtodoanditwas
moreofahabitgoalwherehowmanytimesIwantedtodostrength
training.I’vealwaysdoneaprettygoodjobonthecardioandreally
maintainingmyweight,butIcouldseeasIwasgettingolderthat
Iwasgoingtobelosingmystrengthandmusclemassandallthat
whichisimportanttheolderyouget.
IgotsofrustratedwiththisandIwastalkingtoafriendofmine
who’sapsychologist.IsaidI’vehadthisonmygoallistnowfora
coupleofyearsandIjustneverseemedtogettoit.I’mjustlikeI
knowbetter,Iteachthisstuff.Hesaidtome,hesaid,“Youneedto
bringinanoutsideresource.”Isaid,“Whatdoyoumean?”Hesaid,
“Whydon’tyouhireatrainer?”I’mlikeduh,Itwasoneofthose
momentswhereIslappedmyselfontheheadandIwentyeah,why
not?Ihiredatrainer.ThatwasthreeyearsagoandItrainedwith
himthreedaysaweekeveryweekandI’mstrongerthanI’veever
beeninmylife,butthatrequiredbringinginanoutsideresource.
NowwhydidIwaitsolong?Idon’tknow.Itwouldn’thavetobea
trainer.There’sprobablypeoplelisteningtothisthatcan’timagine
hiringatrainer,butitcouldbeaworkoutbuddyliketheguysthat

yourselfinnow.Becausewhenwestartatthebeginningoftheyear
