INTRODUCTION
SPIE Focus Congress;
Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies in the UK,
The main aim of the congress is provide a forum to young researchers can boost their careers through a generation of multidisciplinary networking that promotes international collaboration between academics and institutions. This event intent to host more than 30 universities from the UK and Latin America. The collaboration of Universities with international funds from UK and Mexican research councils, which are collaborating in the event, can provide sources for new projects lead by early career researchers.
The XVI symposium of Mexican students and studies in the United Kingdom was a space for scientific
and academic dissemination aimed at students, researchers, research centers, universities and
companies interested in the scientific and technological development of Mexico and Latin America.
As a forum for multidisciplinary meeting and discussion, where participants presented their innovative
ideas and knowledge generated through their research in the United Kingdom, students were provided
direct contact with authorities from research centers, international academic institutions and companies
to create links and promote their work generating a network of professional development in the short
and medium term.

Event Description
The three-day conference was held at the University of Southampton Highfield campus from July 11 to
13, 2018. At the event, the eight current faculties of the University of Southampton participated in the
program that was divided into workshops, plenary sessions, keynote talks, technical sessions, poster
sessions and social events.
Prior to the symposium, a delegation of Mexican universities visited several departments on three
campuses: Highfield, Bolderwood and NOCS. Researchers, students and staff from the University of
Southampton showed visitors the university capabilities and lines of research that promote bilateral
collaboration for other international projects. Likewise, the Mexican students of the University of
Southampton had the opportunity to create collaborative networks with Mexican institutions during this
day, prior to the three days of the conference.
Aims
• The multidisciplinary meeting between researchers and students of the University of the United
Kingdom with academic units and Mexican Institutions.
• Promote research collaboration between academia and industry, promoting the professional
development of PhD students and young career researchers.
• Encourage joint research projects between the searchers the University of the United Kingdom and
Latin American Universities with the use of bilateral cooperation programs such as international
research funds.
Event impact
The event promoted internationally the work of PhD students and young career researches.
The wide participation of universities, institutions and researchers during the event, fostered
the creation of collaboration opportunities in academic and industrial projects for PhD
students and researchers an international and collaborative environment.
The event registered 229 people, of which 170 people from seven different countries
attended. The event counted with the participation of 62 academic units and institutions from
Mexico, Colombia, Chile, France, Italy, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
87 abstracts were received from students and young researchers from 49 universities listed in
Annex A.
For the first time in the editions of the Symposium of Mexican Students and Studies in the
United Kingdom and the SPIE Focus congress, there was a call for extended papers, which
was voluntary and additional to the receipt of the abstracts of works. In response to this call,
18 extended papers were received, which were deposited in a public repository assigning
them a DOI, which will allow the work of the researchers to be cited. In Annex B the received
works and their unique identification numbers are listed.
