Welcome to Chickenshed – and our 40th year celebrations!As we launch another inspiring season of shows and workshops for all ages, we also invite you to join us in celebrating 40 years of Chickenshed.

We have a plethora of events and exhibitions planned throughout 2014 to celebrate Chickenshed’s past, present and future. A beautiful commemorative book – An Awfully Big Adventure – is available to purchase now. Celebratory plans include a front of house exhibition depicting our rich history through art, a reunion weekend, and many more activities across the festival year. Several exhibitions in and around Chickenshed will be open free of charge to the public, so please keep checking our website and ensure you make time to see them during your visit. A huge highlight will be our Spring Show in March where we’ve lovingly selected an array of amazing moments from some of our most pivotal shows to celebrate our 40 years, as well as offering a glimpse into our future. To get you excited we’ve included a few photos from some previous performances throughout this brochure. Whether you have an interest or relationship with Chickenshed now, or know someone that did in the past, we hope to welcome you and re-connect with them during this special year.

Other highlights this Spring include the return of the entertaining Emerging Writers’ Week which will showcase work from both new writers and those with more experience. We’ll have more of our fantastic jazz and comedy nights, Tales Shows, Big Days Out, performance workshops for children, and another season of our Community Chorus. Our compelling one-man show, The Rain That Washes, continues to go from strength to strength with a national tour following an amazing run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2013. Where it all started – the original chicken shed 1974

For An Awfully Big Performance we’ve lovingly selected an array of amazing moments from some of the most pivotal shows from our long history of outstanding theatre that will brilliantly showcase our unique performance style. Expect uplifting dance, beautiful music and songs, as well as inspiring dialogue. This selection of pieces will combine to celebrate the individual, the diversity of our cast and, of course, the people who complete the experience – you, the audience.

An Awfully Big Performance is an extra special chance to re-live the memories that define Chickenshed as a creative force, whilst at the same time establishing a launch pad for our next 40 years.

The excerpts performed will vary in content and the show will be generally suitable for ages 7+.

Now in its third year, Emerging Writers’ Week provides a fascinating and exciting platform for new work that has been nurtured within the Chickenshed Writers’ Group. Reflecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the creators, the week will showcase an array of work from both new writers and those with more experience who are developing new pieces.

We promise an eclectic and informal evening of short, simply staged plays that will be entertaining, thought-provoking, moving and fun.

Tales from the Shed are vibrant, interactive theatre shows that are perfect for young children. They are informal, lively and amazingly engaging as the performers and audience share the same space - children are always encouraged to make a lot of noise and to make the story happen. Welcome the start of the warm weather with a bang! Tales Big Day Out is an enjoyable and entertaining outing for all the family, whether you’re familiar with the Tales world or you’re coming along for the first time. Children will have the opportunity to take part in a great interactive workshop and watch a fun performance of Tales from the Shed, then everyone will come together for a huge Tales extravaganza in the amphitheatre. There will also be free craft and face-painting activities taking place throughout the event. (Activities and performances will be inside if there is bad weather.)

Past Big Days Out have sold out fast – book early to avoid disappointment.

Tales PartiesAfter the 11.30am Tales from the Shed Saturday show at Chickenshed, you can have a special birthday party in a designated area of the bar. For your party you get a mention during the Tales from the Shed show for the birthday boy/girl, a Tales character singing Happy Birthday at your table and delicious party food.

Chickenshed offers a unique opportunity to learn and perform in a working theatre. We have flexible entry requirements because we appreciate that talent and passion can’t always be measured by exam results. We have a great success rate both in retaining students and achieving results - our recent successes include a 98% pass rate for our BTEC course and 25% of our recent graduates achieving the equivalent of a First on our Foundation Degree. We are also rated ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED.

A great opportunity for young people to develop their performance skills using our proven teaching methods and unique performance style.

Led by our highly experienced and energetic staff, each session will involve movement, drama, singing and story-making. Every workshop is different and designed so that a child of any ability can come to all sessions, or drop in to one session from time to time.
