Marrickville Reconciliation Walk

30 May From Steele Park to Richardson’s Lookout

The Gallipoli Centenary Peace Campaign (GCPC) in conjunction with the Cooks River Valley Association (CRVA) held a Reconciliation Walk in Marrickville on Saturday 30 May.

The event was organised to

(a) mark the anniversary of the High Court’s Mabo decision on 3 June in 1992 recognising native title (b) call for the Frontier Wars and their dele-terious impact on Aboriginal peoples to be officially recognised (c) acknowledge the 1,000 plus Aborigi-

nal soldiers who fought in WW1 who faced ongoing discrimination, and worse, on their return home and (d) welcome Marrickville Council’s recent co-naming of Richardson’s Lookout as Marrickville Peace Park.

At the start, John Butcher (Convenor, GCPC), Jenny Newman (a local Wiradjuri woman) and Jo Haylen MP (new member for the

state seat Summer Hill) spoke to a gathering of over 50 people in Steel Park. Jenny then led the walk to the Aboriginal Interpretive Sites in Steel

Park, Warren Park and finally in Peace Park. Along the way, Bernie Hobbs (ABC online science broad-caster) also spoke briefly about the Mudcrabs and the regenerative work this group has been doing on the foreshores of the Cooks River.

At the conclusion of the walk in the Peace Park, John Butcher spoke about the co-naming of the park by Marrickville Council in April this year, its Aboriginal, settler and military histories and the hope that

the Peace Park will encourage a greater determination to seek non-military resolutions to conflicts at home and abroad in the future.

Jenny, in her concluding re-marks, noted that armed conflicts

between Indigenous communities prior to colonization were not about ownership of territory. “Of all the wars that Indigenous people fought against each other and with each other … the one thing we never had … was a territory war.” This was be-

cause “our sense of country was one of custodianship and belonging ra-ther than ownership.” In the light of this, Jenny noted how shocking it must have been for Indigenous peoples to suffer the territory wars and the progressive dispossession of

their land following the arrival of the

First Fleet from Britain in mid Janu-ary 1788.

After expressing her appreci-

ation for being able to join with oth-ers, including her new found rela-tives, and share her many stories during the Reconciliation Walk, Jenny concluded in the same way as she began in Steel Park – by reading from Romaine Moreton’s collection of

poems Post Me To The Prime Minister

(2004).

Francis Calls for Reorientation of Catechesis

away from 'Simply Scholastic Sphere'

Pope Francis has called for a reorientation of the Catholic church's way of educating people in the faith, saying the process of catechesis should steer away from using "simply the scholastic sphere" in order to teach people to encounter and follow

Christ. The pontiff has also offered a

new definition for a term that has long befuddled many church observ-ers, redefining the "new evangeliza-tion" as an effort by Catholics to evince their faith by working to help

those on society's peripheries. Speaking in an audience Fri-

day with participants of a meeting of the Pontifical Council for the Promo-tion of the New Evangelization, Fran-cis first said that the times in which

we live are ones of "great changes." "Truly, these changes are a

happy provocation to gather the signs of the times that the Lord offers the Church so that it may be able ... to bring Jesus Christ to the people of our time," said the pope. "The mis-

sion is always identical, but the lan-guage with which to announce the Gospel asks to be renovated, with pastoral wisdom."

"This is essential, both to be understood by our contemporaries and because the Catholic tradition

might speak to the cultures of today's world and help them to open them-selves to the perennial fruitfulness of the Christ's message," he said.

"We must not have fear to make the times of great challenges

ours," he continued. Francis then said that people

today are waiting on the church, "that it may know to walk with them, offering the company of the witness of faith that offers support with all, in particular with the most alone and

marginalized." "How many poor people are

waiting for the Gospel that frees!" the pope said. "How many men and women, in the existential peripheries generated by the consumer society,

wait for our closeness and our soli-darity!"

"The new evangelization therefore is this: to take awareness of the merciful love of the Father to truly become ourselves instruments of salvation for our brothers," he

said.

The term "new evangeliza-tion" was used frequently by Pope Benedict XVI, who created the pontif-ical council on the issue in 2010 and held a global meeting of bishops in

Rome to discuss the matter in 2012. The exact meaning of the term and directive for the council have, howev-er, remained a bit unclear.

Francis' redefinition of the term seems to place the emphasis on

evangelizing by example and in showing mercy and care for the poor-est in society.

Touching on the process of catechesis later in his talk Friday, the pontiff said the question of how to educate the faithful "is not rhetorical

but essential." "The answer requires cour-

age, creativity, and decision to un-dertake paths sometimes yet unex-plored," he continued.

"The catechesis, as a compo-nent of the process of evangelization,

needs to go beyond simply the scho-lastic sphere to educate believers, from childhood, to meet Christ, living and working in his church."

"The challenge of the new evangelization and of catechesis, therefore, is at stake truly on this

fundamental point: how to meet Christ, what is the most coherent place to find him and follow him," said the pope.

Francis' emphasis on taking catechesis beyond the academic

sphere could represent a significant shift for the global Catholic church, where educators and bishops fre-quently refer to the rather regiment-ed and lengthy Catechism of the

Catholic Church in their teachings. The pope on Friday also

spoke on the role of the Holy Spirit, saying the Spirit is "the architect of

the growth of the Church in under-standing the truth of Christ."

"It is He that opens the heart of believers and transforms it so that the forgiveness received may become an experience of love for [our] broth-ers," the pope continued. "It is al-

ways the Spirit that opens the mind of the disciple of Christ to more fully understand the commitment required and the forms which give depth and credibility to the [Christian] witness."

Adding a phrase off the cuff,

Francis said: "We have much need for the Spirit because it opens our minds and our hearts."

The pontiff was speaking to the pontifical council on the occasion of its plenary meeting at the Vatican, which was focused on the theme:

"Relationship between evangelization and catechesis."

Francis has also entrusted the council with organizing the up-coming Jubilee year of mercy, which is to formally open Dec. 8.

Ministry of Care & Support to Aged and Infirm Mass is celebrated monthly in all the Nursing Homes in Marrickville.

Communion is taken to sick residents in Nursing Homes & in their homes on a weekly basis, either by Ministers of Care or family members.

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is offered after Masses on First Fridays, and at the 10am Italian mass on 4th Fridays. Also available on request and

recommended before attending hospital for major surgery.

The Annual Diocesan Corpus Christi Procession starts at 2.30pm from St Patrick’s Church Hill and pro-ceeds to the Cathedral Forecourt. Book for Prayer Intentions is in Centre of the Church. We invite a Volunteer to carry

the book for the Procession and place it at the Cathedral.

worship this day as part of the Open Marrickville Programme. They will visit a Mosque, Buddhist Temple, Or-thodox Church and St Brigid’s. They

will be at St Brigid’s at 12.15pm for 30 minutes.
