PASTOR’S CORNER 1 1

In this Year of Mercy, Lent will reveal the purpose of fas ng , almsgiving and prayer. It is less about personal discipline and more about probing our hearts to know our need to give and receive mercy. “Rend your hearts and not your garments,” the Prophet Joel proclaims. Ritual acts point to the real interior work of repentance—our hearts moved to the breaking point as we probe the wounds we have inflicted on others. Mercy pries us open, exposes our faults and then moves us to seek reconcilia on. How much harder this is than depriving ourselves of food, upping our prayer me or wri ng a check to some charity. Yet we know it sets us free. Throughout Lent, we will hear o en the words of Psalm 51: “Have mercy on me, O God, in your kindness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.” To learn this psalm by heart is to challenge our denials and our ra onaliza ons. Do we know our offenses? Have we delved into our souls to find the dry, stony places where past sins lie buried, where our bap smal waters have yet to reach the desert so life can thrive there again? In order to be ambassadors for Christ, we must know mercy ourselves. We cannot give what we do not have. Now is the day of salva-

on for those who turn toward God. (cf 2 Cor 5:20 ff) Jesus dis nguishes public piety from real repentance. God sees our secret mo ves and sends truth and grace to aid us in our desire to

be good. Even if we make slow progress, the purpose of prayer, fas ng and almsgiving is to deepen our rela onship with God, who does not need good works. God invites us beyond guilt and fear. God loves us in our frailty and wants only our friendship. Those who act virtuously for show already have their reward, but miss a chance to know God more deeply. Habitual prayer, generosity and self-control bring us closer to God. An easy familiarity with God brings inner peace. Being on a first-name basis with Jesus, his Ab-ba and their Spirit makes prayer spontaneous and automa c. We hardly need to find God if we live con nually in the diving presence. The purpose of the Holy Year, Pope Francis says, is to “become merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful.” We share God’s name and bear the divine likeness when we seek this closeness, and in turn this enables us to treat others with pa ence and kindness. It shows us how to win back those we have offended or who have offended us. Mercy is the path to the joy of the Gospel. Even if we must cross the desert of Lent to get there, it is a journey worth making. Word and Eucharist are the voice of God and manna from heaven for Lent. Our des na on is Easter. If, in these 40 days, we die to ourselves, we will surely rise with Christ. Then our secret life with God will be revealed in glory. Siempre Adelante,

Fr. Mike

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Fas ng may be a priority in your Lenten spring-cleaning regimen. Almost every religious tradi on recognizes that fas ng is a key to heightened spir-itual awareness. You know this from your own ex-perience. When you are engaged in a hobby, pain ng a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply for-get to eat. What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the ac on is itself nourishing. In fas ng from food, or drink, or habitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important. Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten fast, you will no ce traces of fas ng in our liturgy. We fast from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers bedecking the altar, and there may be a no ceable drop in the number of infant bap sms as parents elect to wait un l Easter. This hints that fas ng is a prelude to feas ng, and the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare a er a long silence. In the same way, even a small fast--no cream in the coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car--can not only point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the feast when we break our fast together. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

4 YOUTH FORMATION

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did You Know? Electronic da ng violence is prevalent among teens Teenagers do a lot of communica ng online and via mobile devices through social media and tex-

ng. En re rela onships can be shaped formed over the internet and messaging, and the private nature of these rela onships may make it easy to hide signs of abuse and violence. Da ng violence means any act of mental, emo onal or physical aggression among a couple sharing an in mate rela onship. Online, these acts are harder to pin-point, especially for adult outsiders whose children may be vic ms of emo onal da ng abuse. Ask your teens about their rela onships, and how their partners treat them online and in person. For a copy of the ar cle “Electronic Da ng Violence Among Teens,” email [email protected].
