Friends of St Faith’s

After a very wintery week we are looking forward to Spring and our Easter celebrations on Friday 23 March (more information to follow soon). After that our next fund raising event is the much loved ‘Wine and Wisdom’ on Friday 27 April; tickets include food at the affordable price of £8.50. World Book Day begins as Buzz Lightyear saves the day

Despite the cold and snow, a fantastic array of characters walked the pathways and passages of St Faith’s today! From Mary Poppins to Mrs May, Harry Potter to Winnie the Witch, many were recreated by staff and children in aid of World Book Day! The fun began with Assembly and every child being presented with their book token to spend on either a specially-written book for the event or to be put towards one of their choice. Perform For Schools were snowed in but we battled on to deliver creative workshops. The children lost their inhibitions and became pirates, dragons, giants, kings and princesses. Our very own bank of artists (Mr Clark and Madame Stokes) demonstrated the creation of characters through using our imagination and sharing ideas with talking partners, whilst other classes wrote book reviews of their favourite books inspiring others to enjoy them. Year 2 shared stories, wrote about various characters and then

Year 6 enjoyed a home-grown drama workshop with Miss Johnson based on the book 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo. Others enjoyed the well-resourced Library which became a storytelling sanctuary away from the biting wind. Throughout the day both children and adults shared and enjoyed book-based activities.

Finally, the 'Bring and Buy' book sale gave all the opportunity to recycle their well-loved stories and buy a new, exciting book for just 50p. Sports Report

This week we have seen more snowball competitions than sports fixtures taking place. The scheduled Netball and Hockey fixtures against St Lawrence College were cancelled early in the week but the children have still been active and enjoying the Dodgeball and Handball sessions in the warm and comfort of our halls. Next week will hopefully bring more suitable outside conditions as the girls have Netball matches against Lorenden and Kent College to look forward to whilst the boys are hosting Sandwich Junior School for the semi-final of the Hammond Cup. Good luck everyone and may the weather gods be kind to us!

‘Language of Learning’ - an interactive assembly delivered by Mrs Coombs Mrs Coombs recently delivered an interesting and interactive assembly. They explored Reflectiveness when watching patterns and listening to music. They giggled as the Minions from ‘Despicable Me’ worked in Collaboration to change a light bulb. They discussed Initiative with their classmates and considered how they might solve a problem or choose resources. We all decided that Resilience was a must and could be called Bouncebackability! Mark Ruffalo and Murray from ‘Sesame Street’ explained what Empathy was through a role play video and we explained how we could identify Positivity and Happiness in difficult situations. Einstein’s words ‘I have no special talent, I am only passionately curious’ helped us discuss our own Curiosity. Finally we shared together an inspirational video in which we felt Appreciation of scenes from nature, family relationships and friendships shown alongside Louis Armstrong’s version of ‘What a Wonderful World’. This is our language of learning: 8 little words that can

make a difference and help us grow into strong, successful young people.

Year 4 Teachers put their feet up!

Mrs Mellin and Mr Andrews put their feet up at the beginning of a Year 4 History lesson. A new teacher, Miss N, for whom teaching runs through the veins gave an engaging talk about the Bayeux Tapestry, which she visited whilst in France this summer. The children were amazed by Miss N’s knowledge and impressed with her excellent answering of their questions. Although a little trigger happy with house-points and stars, we are sure Mr Groves will be keen to tie this new teacher down to a long-term contract. Unfortunately for St Faith’s, it seems Miss N, although extremely talented, doesn’t see her future in teaching. Instead she has aspirations of becoming an Olympian. With her ability to

perform under pressure tested today, we’re sure she will go far with whatever career path she follows. Thank you for your help, Miss N, you’re a superstar!

March 1st What a special day March 1st is this year! As well as being World Book Day it is also St David's day and the Hindu festival of Holi. There may be snow on the ground but Holi is a time when Hindus celebrate their first day of Spring. It is a festival of colour and love. Happy Holi to all our Hindu families, and of course Happy St David's day to anybody who has Welsh blood in them. We certainly like James's Welsh dragon costume. Perhaps we should use him to melt the ice away from the car park!

BOOK REVIEW

Grandpa’s Great Escape – David Walliams This books is about a grandpa and his grandson. He always calls his grandson ‘Squadron Leader’ as Grandpa still thinks he is in the war. At night Grandpa always runs off, forgetting what he is doing, and the grandson has to find him. He is made to move to a home for the elderly and after a while plans a dramatic escape with other residents. It all ends happily with Grandpa living where he would like to be. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to other people. 8 out of 10! By Albert Ray (Year 5)
