Dear Friends in Christ,
I grew up attending the Stations of the Cross with my family. At my home
parish in La Crosse, the pastor would pray the Stations before each Sunday
Mass. The booklets used were the very familiar Stations according to the
method of St. Alphonsus Liguori. Since I grew up praying this version of the
Stations, I always felt comfortable praying them. When I got to the seminary
in Winona, Minnesota, we prayed the Stations of the Cross quite differently.
Each Friday, a group of fourteen seminarians were chosen to write their own
Stations of the Cross and that collection of meditations were prayed. It
seemed so different to me because I was used to the words of St. Alphonsus
Liguori. There were times I felt upset by my brothers’ meditations since I
didn’t think they “hit the mark” in the right way. When I got to the major
seminary, we used yet a different booklet. Eventually I realized that the
important part about the Stations of the Cross is meditating on the Passion and
Death of our Lord Jesus, not which words we use to do that. It took me a long
time to realize that. Let us all during this Lenten Season take the time to pray
the Stations, whether in Church or at home, and truly and earnestly meditate
on our Lord’s Passion and Death.
Illness and the Flu. With the news and the sense of heightened anxiety and
vulnerability growing in our communities related to the recent COVID-19
coronavirus outbreak, Bishop William Callahan has instructed all parishes to
suspend the Sign of Peace at Mass. Please do not shake hands with one
another at Mass. Furthermore, if you are scheduled to usher, read, serve, or be
an extraordinary minister and are sick, please consider finding a replacement.
Also, do not be offended if I do not shake your hand after Mass. If you are
sick or might be sick, please consider refraining from receiving the Precious
Blood from the chalice. Remember that you receive the entire Eucharist under
one species alone.
The bishop has also asked me to assure the faithful that if they are sick or
experiencing symptoms of sickness they are not obliged to attend Mass, and
even that out of charity they ought not to attend. Please, if you are sick or
taking care of sick family members, do not feel guilty about staying home.
As you might have seen on TV or read in the newspapers, the best way to stop
the spread of disease is proper handwashing. The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention reminds everyone that each time you wash your hands you
should lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your
nails with soap and then scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Hum the
“Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice if you need a timer.
These are simple steps to keep us all healthy, regardless of the time or season.
God bless!
Fr. Guanella

What is a Novena? A Novena is made up of nine days of prayer and meditation to ask God for special
prayer requests or petitions. All you need to do is say the daily prayer with a sincere
heart. It is not necessary to pray at the same time everyday; and if you miss a day;
you can either: skip the day you missed altogether, or say the prayer twice in one day.
There are no “Rules” and there are no “consequences” God is forgiving and merciful!

saint of the Universal Church. We would like to offer the opportunity to make
a consecration (privately or as a parish) to St. Joseph. Fr. Calloway, MIC, has
written a book called "Consecration to St. Joseph", a 33 day program dedicated
to the life and wonders of our spiritual father, St. Joseph, Universal patron of
the Church and the Terror of Demons. Sunday, March 29 through April 30.
Consecration will take place May 1st at St. Mary's. If you would like to
purchase your own copy of the book, cost $15.00.
