GREAT NEWS! Now that we have a beautiful commercial kitchen, plans are being made to resume the monthly Shelter Dinner meals that have been on hiatus while we were in the midst of construction. In past years, we used to prepare and transport the meals on the first Thursday of each month but we have now been asked to change to the third Monday of each month. Monica Chappell will be looking for “chefs” to shop for and prepare the meal and Ann Diemer will be looking for people interested in transporting and serving at the shelter. You can do the cooking or transporting as a family or with friends. We usually serve around 75 appreciative guests. If you haven’t been involved in the past, those that have will tell you that it is a fun and rewarding experience. Once a month, the “chef” plans and shops for the ingredients for the meal. The meal is then prepared in our kitchen and placed in transport boxes to keep the food at a safe temperature for transport. If you are interested in being a chef, please contact Monica Chappell at [email protected]. Transporting and serving consists of picking up the food at our kitchen and driving to the shelter in North Concord and serving to the guests, usually a couple of hours (4:15 – 6:30 pm) If you are interested in transporting & serving, please contact Ann Diemer at [email protected]. Winter Nights shelter sign ups will be held the weekend of October 12/13...to serve at Orinda Community Church from Tues Nov 5 through Sunday morning Nov 10th. If any questions, please contact Jan Saillard 847.736.0419 or Karen Rose Kalvass 925.295.4669. Our annual "Share the Warmth" dr ive will be held the weekend of Oct 19 & 20th. Please look through your drawers, closets & garages for anything warm! Coats, blankets, hats, mittens, tents, boots, anything warm!!!! Please contact Karen Rose Kalvass with any questions at 925.285.4669.
Food Basket Just a quick reminder that next weekend, October 12/13 will be the monthly food collection. Please bring canned or dried beans – refried, pinto, black, kidney, pork & beans, baked MANY THANKS to all parishioners who have participated in the monthly food collections to the St. P. Food Basket. Your contributions over the past years have been such a blessing to individuals and families serviced by two caring agencies: Monument Crisis Center and Food Pantry at St. Francis of Assisi (sponsored by St. Vincent de Paul).
Social Justice Committee - Immigration “When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as a citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 19:33-34 One of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching is the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable in our midst. The Catholic Church is, by its very title, a universal church, not a national church. Therefore, as Catholics, we must view the issue of immigration from a universal perspective, not a nationalistic one. The St. Perpetua Social Justice Committee will study the issues surrounding immigration from a Catholic perspective in order to understand its causes, identify solutions and learn how we can get involved. Particular attention will be placed on immigration issues in our greater community of the East Bay. For more information, contact Buzz Sherwood [email protected]. Please join us at our next meeting on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. to learn more.

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Many years ago I attended the going-away party of a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ) who, after working hard well into her eighties, was moving to their retirement home because of some health problems. For over an hour the tributes to her brought forward secure, prosperous adults whom she befriended as at-risk children, and cared for into adulthood. We heard from grateful parents who were devoted to her because of her passionate advocacy on the part of their children, decades earlier. We watched elderly, frail nursing home patients weep in gratitude to her for her compassionate care for them. We heard multi-generational stories of her friendship to families who needed and loved her, from their own childhoods all the way to the lives of their grandchildren. She was, of course, miserably uncomfortable through the whole evening, watching the clock and trying to get out from under the attention she had successfully eluded her whole life as a Religious, until she couldn’t find anywhere to hide and had to listen to a small fraction of the people who love her. When it was finally her chance to speak, after the lengthy standing ovation and over the muffled sobs of the packed room, she simply said, “What’s the big deal? I only did what I was supposed to do.” And that was that. My scripture-teacher husband says to me all the time, as I thank him for the endless ways he makes my life joyful, “ I am your unprofitable servant. I do what I am obliged to do.” He’s kidding, but not really. We are meant to serve each other, in Jesus’ name. I love being a servant in the household of God.
In what ways are the most rewarding parts of your life related to service?

PARKING With the completion of our community center and new striping of the parking lots in front of the church and school it is critical that we only park in marked designated parking spots. As per fire code, we are NOT allowed to park elsewhere and could get fined for not obeying this code. If all spots are taken, please use the upper lot. Thanks so much for your cooperation and understanding.
