Overview

Standards and codes are the technical foundations of quality, safety and sustainability in the construction field. Codes and standards also provide a common scientific language used in trade and commerce within this industry. This is evident by the fact that more than 80 percent of global commodity trade is impacted by standards.

All GSO member nations and GSO itself have signed memorandums of understanding with ASTM International, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Collectively, they cite more than 3,700 ASTM standards, many of which - from paint and piping to steel and roofing - are construction-related. An April 2013 conference on Sustainability in Construction, hosted by ASTM at its headquarters, brought together representatives from GSO, its member nations, and U.S. - domiciled standards and codes groups to discuss aspects

of sustainability, environmental product declarations and product certification, government use of standards and standards work by Middle East-based organizations. ASTM International continues to collaborate with the Gulf Cooperation Council and GSO to further the use of international standards and codes.

This workshop is organized jointly by GORD, GSO, ASTM & ICC and presented in Doha, Qatar, in conjunction with the International Construction Technology and Building Materials Exhibition, scheduled for May 2015. The event is being conducted in partnership with the U.S. International Trade Administration. The aim of the workshop is to share knowledge and exchange thoughts between participants from both parties on codes and standards and their support for sustainable construction as well as the link between codes and standards with manufactured products and compliance.
