ROSARY FOR PEACE AND WISDOM Scripture focus for the August 15 Mass The Solemnity of the

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1Cor 15:54b-58)

Today's feast celebrates Mary's Assumption into heaven. It is one of three feasts of Mary that are Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics in the United States. January 1 is the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, and December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven.

The Gospel for this day reminds us that Mary's Assumption into heaven is best understood with regard for the full spectrum of Catholic beliefs about the person of Christ and the person of Mary. Only Mary, who was born without stain of original sin—the Immaculate Conception—could give birth to Christ, who is fully God and fully human. This is called the Immaculate Conception. Because of Mary's role in God's plan of salvation, she does not suffer from the effects of sin, which are death and decay. Mary is the first to receive the fullness of the redemption that her son has won for all of humanity. The Church, therefore, recognizes Mary as the sign of the salvation promised to all.

Today's Gospel highlights Mary's faith. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of salvation.

Minna Diocese Mission Priest is Coming!

Next Weekend we will host, at all the Masses, a missionary to speak about their work in bringing the saving mission of Christ to the poor and marginalized people of God in Minna

Diocese, Nigeria. Fr. John Mark Ogu comes from Nigeria, a country that has been on the news these days due to the kidnapping of over 200 children by the Boko Haram terrorist group. The Diocese of Minna is located in a predominantly Muslim population. Minna Diocese provides ministry to both Christians and Muslims through her non-profit schools, Primary Health Care Clinics and other social justice programs. Don't miss the opportunity of this faith and cultural exchange. You will learn about the joys and challenges of your brothers and sisters and share in the missionary work of the Church with your prayers and financial support. Feel free to visit with the missionary, ask questions on the difference your donation is going to make in Minna Diocese. God bless you.

WORD OF LIFE: August 15, 2021

Throughout her life, the Blessed Mother continually chose to go deeper into her relationship with God. She modeled how to value and respect His precious gift of human life, from the moment of conception to its natural end. In the Annunciation, through her “yes,” Mary

witnessed to the undeniable humanity of unborn children as she conceived and carried the Christ child in her womb. After the Annunciation, having learned that her cousin Elizabeth was with child, she went in haste to her aid.

Our Blessed Mother shows us how the way we live today can prepare us, in hope, to also enter into heavenly glory at the end of our lives. Are we open to God’s precious gift of new life? How do we support expectant mothers and parents of young children? Do we prioritize showing our love and care for loved ones who are ill or aging?

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

CATECHIST NEWS !

Christ Healing the Blind, ca. 1570

This image by the famed artist, El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), illustrates the Gospel account of Christ healing a blind man by anointing his eyes.

The past year has highlighted the urgent need for healing--physical, spiritual, emotional--in ourselves and in our world.

As our world struggles to heal, complete healing is not possible without Jesus as the Divine Physician. When our souls

heal, all heals, despite our suffering.
