A bell rings and the first hymn is said (at home you may wish to sing)He sat to watch o’er customs paid,A man of scorned and hardening trade,Alike the symbol and the toolOf foreign masters’ hated rule.

But grace within his breast had stirred; There needed but the timely word:It came, true Lord of souls, from thee,That royal summons, 'Follow me.'

Enough, when thou wast passing by,To hear thy voice, to meet thine eye:He rose, responsive to the call,And left his task, his gains, his all.

O wise exchange! with these to part,And lay up treasure in the heart--Who now with crown of light doth shineAmong the apostolic line.

Come, Saviour, as in days of old;Pass where the world has strongest hold,And faithless care and selfish greedAre thorns that choke the holy seed.,

Who keep thy gifts, O bid them claimThe steward’s, not the owner’s name;Who yield up all for thy dear sake,Let them of Matthew’s wealth partake.

Words: William Bright (1824-1901)

Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, says the Lord.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord be with you and also with you2

CONFESSION AND GOD’S ASSURANCE OF SINS FORGIVEN

We run the race set before us, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Therefore let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which clings so closely, bringing them to Jesus in penitence and faith.Silence is kept for personal reflection. You were sent to preach the good news of lightin the darkness of the world:Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. You were sent to plant in our hearts the seed of eternal life:Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. You were sent to reconcile us to yourselfby the shedding of your blood:Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

May Almighty God have mercy upon you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,we worship you, we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world:have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father:receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The COLLECT (THE PRAYER FOR THE DAY) and the Priest introduces a short period of silent prayer with the words “Let us pray” O God, who with untold mercywere pleased to choose as an ApostleSaint Matthew, the tax collector, grant that, sustained by his example and intercession,we may merit to hold firm in following you.Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.Amen

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

FIRST READINGEphesians 4:1-7,11-13I, the prisoner in the Lord, implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. There is one Body, one Spirit, just as you were all called into one and the same hope when you were called. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all, over all, through all and within all. Each one of us, however, has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. To some, his gift was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; so that the saints together make a unity in the work of service, building up the body of Christ. In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself.

This is the Word of the LordThanks be to God

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 19:2-5

Their word goes forth through all the earth.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God,and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.Day unto day takes up the storyand night unto night makes known the message.

Their word goes forth through all the earth.

No speech, no word, no voice is heardyet their span extends through all the earth, their words to the utmost bounds of the world.

Their word goes forth through all the earth.

GOSPEL Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! We praise you, O God, we acknowledge you to be the Lord. The glorious company of the apostles praise you, O Lord.Alleluia!

The Lord be with you and also with youHear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John Glory to you, O Lord.

Matthew 9:9-13

It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sickAs Jesus was walking on, he saw a man named Matthew sitting by the customs house, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.

While he was at dinner in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?’ When he heard this he replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and learn the meaning of the words: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. And indeed I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners.’

At the end: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

THE PRAYERSEncouraged by our fellowship with all the saints, let us make our prayers to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ.Father, your Son called men and women to leave the past behindthem and to follow him as his disciples in the way of the cross. Lookwith mercy upon those whom he calls today, marks with the crossand makes his disciples within the Church.Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.Your Son told his disciples not to be afraid and at Easter breathed onthem his gift of peace. Look with mercy upon the world into whichhe sent them out, and give it that peace for which it longs.Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.Your Son formed around him a company who were no longerservants but friends, and he called all those who obeyed him hisbrother and sister and mother. Look with mercy upon our familiesand our friends and upon the communities in which we share.Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.Your Son sent out disciples to preach and heal the sick. Look withmercy on all those who yearn to hear the good news of salvation, and renew among your people the gifts of healing.Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

According to your promise, look withmercy on those who have walked with Christ in this life and nowhave passed through deathRest eternal grant unto them O Lordand let light perpetual shine upon them

The following may be added:We join our prayers with those of Our Lady, Consoler of the Afflicted, Mother of the resurrection Christ as we greet her and say:Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Almighty God, Grant that your Churchmay faithfully hold and make knownthe faith that has come to us through the apostles, that with them and all your saintswe may inherit the glories of eternal life;through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.

THE PEACEWe are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God,through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peaceto those who were far off and those who were near. Alleluia! The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Alleluia!

THE MINISTRY OF THE SACRAMENT

Let the round world with songs rejoice,Let heaven return the joyful voice,

Page 8: stjameschurchhanslopev1.files.wordpress.com · Web viewHe sat to watch o’er customs paid,A man of scorned and hardening trade,Alike the symbol and the toolOf foreign masters’

All mindful of the Apostles’ fame,Let heaven and earth their praise proclaim.

Ye servants who once bore the lightOf gospel truth o’er heathen night,Still may your work that light impart,To glad our eyes and cheer our heart.

O God, by whom to them was givenThe key that shuts and opens heaven,Our chains unbind, our loss repair,And grant us grace to enter there.

For at thy will they preached the wordWhich cured disease, which health conferred;O may thy healing power once moreOur souls to grace and health restore.

That when as judge thy Son shall comeTo bring his ransomed people home,He may with them pronounce us blest,And place us in thine endless rest.

To God the Father, God the Son,And God the Spirit, Three in One,Be honour, praise and majesty,Now and throughout eternity. Amen.

OFFERTORY PRAYERS

Pray my brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father;May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His Name, for our good, and the good of all His Church.

As we celebrate anew the memory of Saint Matthew,

8

Page 9: stjameschurchhanslopev1.files.wordpress.com · Web viewHe sat to watch o’er customs paid,A man of scorned and hardening trade,Alike the symbol and the toolOf foreign masters’

we bring you sacrifices and prayers, O Lord, humbly imploring you to look kindly on your Church, whose faith you have nourished by the preaching of the Apostles. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Lord be with you and also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

All kneel

It is indeed right and goodthat we should give you thanks, praise and glory, almighty and everlasting God,through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. For after his resurrection he sent out his apostles and evangeliststo preach the gospel to all nations and lead us in the way of truth.Himself the chief cornerstone,he founded his Church upon the apostles firmly to stand for everas a sign of your holiness upon earthand a living witness to all of the way that leads to heaven. And so with angels and archangelsand with all the company of heavenwe lift our voices and join in their unending hymn of praise:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will,

9

Page 10: stjameschurchhanslopev1.files.wordpress.com · Web viewHe sat to watch o’er customs paid,A man of scorned and hardening trade,Alike the symbol and the toolOf foreign masters’

these gifts of bread and winemay become the body and blood

of our Lord Jesus Christ;who in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE, EAT; THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU; DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying:

DRINK THIS, ALL OF YOU; THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS, AS OFTEN AS YOU DRINK IT,

IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.

Great is the mystery of Faith:

All sayChrist has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption.

As we bring before you this bread and this cup, we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving and we thank you for counting us worthy

to stand in your presence and serve you.

Lord, may this sacrifice, which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world.Strengthen in faith your pilgrim Church on earth;your servant n our bishop, and all the bishops.

Welcome into your kingdom our departedbrothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of Mary,

the virgin Mother of God, of Matthew, James, Simon & Jude, and all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever,

through Jesus Christ our Lord;by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

All say Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;thy kingdom come;

11

thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

THE INVITATION

Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Spiritual Communion is a Christian practice of desiring union with Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is used as a preparation for Mass and by individuals who cannot receive Holy Communion.

Say the following prayerfully and quietly before saying the Prayer for Spiritual Communion:Jesus my Lord, I thee adore, O make me love thee more and moreCome to my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for thee.

THANKSGIVING FOR THE INCARNATION OF JESUS

The Angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary: And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it unto me according to Thy word.

Hail Mary . . .

And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary . . .

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the Incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by His Cross and Passion may we be brought unto the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
