2016 SUMMER SESSIONSPRE-K PROGRAMS (Birth to 5)

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONSOur parent/child swim lessons promote water enrichment and aquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trusted adults. Inthis program, the developmental experiences of each child are used to buildthe child's self-confidence in and out of the water. Parents learn from theinstructor's example how to guide their children through positive reinforce-ment and appropriate praise.

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:

• Shrimp (6-8 months) Child can control their head and sit with supportfrom the hands.

• Kipper (9-12 months) Child can sit without hand support and stand withsupport from the hands.

• Inia (13-18 months) Child can stand without support and walk with orwithout support or aid.

• Perch (19-36 months) Child can run and jump.

Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONSThese programs offer children their first experience in the water withouta parent. Children are taught basic skills that are the building blocksof swimming, including water propulsion, floating, body awareness andindependence. They are also taught some general aquatic safety andpool games. Children will be taught with and without the use of variousinstructional flotation devices.

SEAHORSE (AGES 3-5)Seahorse is for children who aren't ready to be away from their parentto swim with an instructor. This program provides the child with theopportunity to take a Pike class with a parent in the water during class.The instructor will teach the class with the assistance of the parents. Asclass continues through the session and as instructors see fit, parents willbe removed from class and children will work with the instructor directly.

YOUTH SWIM LESSONSLearn to Swim at the Y. Since 1885, the YMCA has been a pioneer inswimming education. Literally millions of people have learned to swimthrough the Y's perfected program. In Y swim lessons, participants learnand practice new swimming skills and feel a sense of achievement frommastering something new that they can enjoy the rest of their lives.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and isappropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction.Children will learn kicking skills, the basic paddle stroke on their front, backand sides, and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In the Guppy class, swimmers will learn to front andback float for 1 minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmicbreathing, with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; sidealternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive. Prerequisites: To enter thislevel, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with orwithout an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFDand 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; and be comfortablein deep water.

Level 3: Minnow In the Minnow class, swimmers will learn to do a standingdive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basicsidestroke 25 yards; and tread water for 1 minute. Prerequisites: To enterthis level, children should be able to front and back float for 1 minute; frontalternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing, with and without anIFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; andkneeling dive.

Level 4: Fish In the Fish class, swimmers will learn to tread water for 3minutes; swim 50 yards front crawl; swim 50 yards breaststroke with legalkick and arm pulls; swim 50 yards backstroke; swim 50 yards elementarybackstroke with a glide; swim 50 yards sidestroke with a scissor kick; andswim 15 yards butterfly. Prerequisites: To enter this level, children shouldbe able to do a standing dive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards;basic breaststroke 25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke25 yards; basic sidestroke 25 yards; and tread water for 1 minute.

Level 5: Flying Fish In the Flying Fish class, swimmers will learn todo a flip turn; swim front crawl 100 yards with bilateral breathing; swim100 yards breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yardselementary backstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim100 yards lifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly. Level 6: Shark In the Shark class, swimmers will learn to take their ownheart rate; learn about open water and backyard pool safety; swim 100yards from crawl with flip turns; swim 100 yards breaststroke withpull-out; swim 50 yards inverted breaststroke; swim 100 yards backstrokewith dolphin kick and pullout; swim 50 yards over-arm sidestroke; swim25 yards butterfly with streamline; and swim 200 yards individual medley.Prerequisites: To enter this level, children should be able to do a flip turn;swim 100 yards front crawl with bilateral breathing; swim 100 yardsbreaststroke; swim 100 yards backstroke; swim 100 yards elementarybackstroke; swim 100 yards sidestroke alternating sides; swim 100 yardslifesaving sidestroke; and swim 15 yards butterfly.

Level 7: Porpoise Swim Club The Porpoise level differs from other levels inthat the format allows older children and teens the opportunity to developa program that fits their interests after they complete the Shark Level.Participants will expand upon the five main points of YMCA swim lessonswhile they learn leadership skills and the value of community service.

ADAPTIVE AQUATICSGoldfishOur Goldfish swim time is for children with diverse neurological, physical orsocial challenges, designed around the specific needs of each participant,and may include the participant being accompanied in the water by a parentor guardian. The program will focus on developing water safety, basicswimming skills and lots of fun.

PRIVATE AND SEMI-PRIVATESWIM LESSONSPrivate and Semi-Private Lessons Private and semi-private lessons areavailable for those looking for more 1-on-1 attention or lower student-to-instructor ratios. Private lessons are for just 1 participant, whereassemi-privates are for 2 or 3. We will work with beginning swimmers andthose looking to improve form and endurance. All lessons are 30 minutes,and are sold in sets of 3, 5 or 7 lessons. Instructors are assigned basedon availability. A form must be filled out at the Member Services Desk tobe considered for lessons. When an instructor becomes available, they willcontact you.

STINGRAY SWIM TEAMIf your child is interested in a competitive swim program, they may beinterested in swimming with our Stingray Swim Team. Practice up to 4 daysa week and have an opportunity to compete against other swimmers atduel meets and invitationals. Stingray starts May 16 and ends in July. Newswimmers should contact coaches for a tryout or participate in one of ourstroke clinics to be evaluated.

FAMILY NIGHTSLooking for quality time with your family? Look no further. The Y hasyou covered. Each month, we offer families fun and healthy ways to spendquality time together through our Family Night programs. Family Nightactivities are open to members and the public and are usually free.

Family Nights are first Friday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.Check front desk for specific activities.

EVER!Going to a summer camp is not only a memory your child willcherish forever, it also has the potential to change his or her life.As today's children are surrounded by modern technology, spendingtime in the great outdoors can be an eye-opening and rewardingexperience. Summer camp allows your child the opportunity to learnnew skills, form wonderful relationships with their peers and learnmore about themselves.

Our camps:

• Are American Camp Association accredited

• Have professionally trained staff with over 40 hours of training,including First Aid, CPR and AED

• Provide instructional and recreational swimming as part of theprogram (excludes camp locations without pools)

• Are dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and securechildren

• Offer extended care in the total cost of child care options

BIRTHDAY PARTIES / FACILITY RENTALSBirthday parties at the Y are available throughout the year. Cost is$10 per child and include use of party room for 1 hour and use of the poolfor 1 additional hour. If you aren't interested in swimming, the party roomwould be available for 2 hours. Dates will be confirmed based on availability.Pavillions are also available to rent in warmer weather along with other areaswithin our facility throughout the year. ADULT WATER FITNESSThe Hastings Lake YMCA has multiple water fitness classes during weekdaymornings and evenings. Classes include the AFYAP Arthritis program, deepwater and shallow water. There's a class for everyone! Classes are free formembers and $50 for non-members. For a listing of class dates and times,please stop by the Member Services Desk or visit hastingslakeymca.org.

FLUID RUNNINGDeep-water running classes that provide all the benefits of running on landand more, without any impact. It's a phenomenal full-body workout! There isa fee for this class and registration is required!The benefits include:• Burning up to 40% more calories than running on land• Building muscular strength and endurance• Working legs, core and arms• Zero impact!• Improving strength and speed• It's fun!You don't have to be a runner or an athlete to participate! This class isfor everyone comfortable in deep water. Flotation belts are provided. Heartrate monitors and a water bottle are recommended but not required.Classes:Tuesday: 9:35-10:20 a.m.; Thursday: 10:15-11 a.m.Friday: 5:45-6:30 a.m.; Saturday: 7:35-8:20 a.m.Cost: $50 members / $80 non-members for unlimited classes a week,or $10 per class.

Minimum age: 15 years Swim 300 yards continuously.

Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.

Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in thewater, swim 20 yards. Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back toreturn to the starting point. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
