Bush Street Ve Mejoras este VeranoEste verano del 2020, el departamento de Obras Públicas de Santa Ana tiene otro emocionante proyecto de construcción para el disfrute de nuestra comunidad. Bush Street Bicycle Boulevard, de Civic Center a la calle 17, el cual consiste en mejoras para el área de bicicletas y medidas para reducir el tráfico diseñadas en una categoría llamada “Transporte Activo.” Este proyecto transformará una calle local típica en una agradable calle ajardinada y un camino visualmente interesante, el cual es más seguro y atractivo, invitando así al mejor uso de bicicletas y uso peatonal. La calle continuará funcionando para el tránsito de vehículos, pero con las mejoras del “Transporte Activo” se convertirá en una amenidad multipropósito. El proyecto es fundado por los Programas de Comunidades Sostenibles para Vivienda Asequible (AHSC Program).

Bush Street Enhancements This SummerComing Summer 2020, Santa Ana Public Works has another exciting project to construct for our community’s enjoyment. Bush Street will be enhanced with a bicycle boulevard from Civic Center to 17th Street. The bicycle enhancements consist of traffic calming measures designed in a category called “Active Transportation.” The project will transform a typical local street into a pleasingly landscaped and visually interesting roadway that is safer and more attractive, thereby inviting greater bicycle and pedestrian use. The street will continue to support vehicle transportation, but with the Active Transportation enhancement it becomes a multipurpose amenity. The project is funded by the Affordable Housing Sustainable Communities Program.
One detailed improvement is the installation of landscaped traffic circles and/or bulb-outs at 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 14th and 16th Streets. Check out the photos here for the “before” and “after” of the traffic circles!

The Civic Center Bike Boulevard from Broadway to Santiago Street is now under construction and will be completed this summer. This project will greatly improve nearby residents’ quality of life as the traffic safety improvements afforded by this project will significantly reduce traffic speeds and offer aesthetically pleasing and inviting landscape amenities bicyclists and pedestrians can enjoy.

• New curb bulb-out extensions starting at Bush Street, Spurgeon Street, French Street and Santiago Street intersections
• Traffic circles with curb bulb-out ex-tensions at the intersections of Minter Street, Lacy Street, Garfield Street and Poinsettia Street
• Updated signs and striping in the corridor with additional protected left-turn arrow signals at Main Street and Civic Center DriveThe purpose of this project is to
improve overall safety and encourage more active transportation, with an emphasis on enhancing bicyclists’ and pedestrians’ utilization and safety on Civic Center Drive.

Civic Center Bike Boulevard Nears Completion
Iluminando los parques de Santa AnaLa Agencia de Servicios Públicos terminó recientemente un proyecto importante de iluminación, el cual mejoró la iluminación en seis parques de la ciudad. En total, se instalaron 94 postes de luz nuevos en los parques Angels, Cabrillo, Chávez, Portola, Riverview y Rosita. Esto incluye nuevos postes de concreto, que son duraderos y resistentes al vandalismo, con nuevas lámparas LED de bajo consumo. La iluminación existente de estos parques era la iluminación original de hace 50 años. Lighting Up Santa Ana City ParksThe Public Works Agency just completed a major lighting project which upgraded lighting in six city parks. All total, 94 new light pole standards were installed at Angels, Cabrillo, Chavez, Portola, Riverview and Rosita Parks. This included new durable, vandal-resistant concrete poles with new energy-efficient LED light fixtures. The existing lighting fixtures at these parks were the original 50-year-old installations. These wooden poles were deteriorating (or removed), and existing lighting levels were not adequate. The new system improves visibility and security and, as a result of newer technology, is also more energy-efficient!

Santa Ana Begins $2.3 Million Street Median Beautification

Many Santa Ana street medians are in the process of being transformed into beautiful landscapes, thanks to the support of the City Council. On April 7, the City Council approved $2.3 million for median landscape rejuvenation projects throughout Santa Ana.
These median corridors are included:• MacArthur Boulevard from Fairview Avenue to the eastern city limit• Fairview Street from Segerstrom Avenue to Civic Center Boulevard• All of 17th Street• Harbor Boulevard from McFadden Avenue to 17th Street• All of First Street• Bristol Street from 17th Street to Memory Lane
The beautification is in response to the withered median landscape caused by irrigation restrictions during California’s record drought a few years ago. The plants selected for this beautification project are primarily California natives and were chosen for their drought-tolerant characteristics and ease of maintenance. The images shown are renderings of what the medians will look like. The City’s Public Works Maintenance Services and Engineering Services teams are directing the project and anticipate completion by July 2020.

The City of Santa Ana, the cities of Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Lake Forest, Orange and Stanton, and the County of Orange have come together to create the Orange County Recycling Market Development Zone (OC RMDZ). Collectively, these cities and the unincorporated areas of Orange County comprise 112.67 square miles with a population of more than 1 million. This economic development program uses the growing supply of recyclable materials to fuel new businesses, expand existing ones, create jobs and divert waste from landfills. The zone program also offers eligible businesses below-market terms financing for new development and expansion projects, as well as technical assistance and free product marketing, provided by the state. Planear nuestro futuro: Actualización del Plan General de Santa Ana¡Ya está aquí el Borrador del Plan General de Santa Ana 2045: Una visión compartida! En todas las ciudades de California se requiere un documento llamado Plan General para guiar la toma de decisiones para el manejo y crecimiento de la comunidad. El documento comunica la visión, valores y metas del desarrollo físico, sustentabilidad y calidad de vida de la comunidad entera.
El documento del Plan General de Santa Ana está diseñado para ser un reflejo de los valores de nuestra comunidad, desarrollados a través de la retroalimentación obtenida durante esfuerzos previos de alcance comunitario. Los cinco “Valores Centrales” que surgieron como las más altas prioridades de la comunidad de Santa Ana son: Salud, Equidad, Sustentabilidad, Cultura y Educación.
El Plan General de Santa Ana será organizado en un total de 12 elementos o tópicos, y remplazará los 16 elementos existentes que fueron revisados exhaustivamente en 1982. Planning for Our Future: Santa Ana’s General Plan UpdateThe 2045 Draft Santa Ana General Plan: A Shared Vision is here! A General Plan document is required by all cities in California to guide decision-making for the management and growth of the community. The document communicates the vision, values and goals for physical development, sustainability and quality of life for the entire community.
The Santa Ana General Plan document is intended to be a reflection of our community values developed from feedback gathered during earlier community outreach efforts. The five “Core Values” that emerged as the highest priorities of the Santa Ana community are: Health, Equity, Sustainability, Culture and Education.
Santa Ana’s General Plan will be organized in a total
of 12 elements, or topics, and will replace 16 existing elements last revised comprehensively in 1982. The Draft Land Use Element proposes policies to promote sustainable development, with opportunities for increased housing and mixed-use development along transit corridors. In addition, the Draft Mobility/Circulation Element proposes reclassifying major streets to allow for future protected bicycle lanes while helping to reduce vehicle emissions and promote healthy lifestyles. Policies and programs that promote health and environmental justice are also included throughout the Draft General Plan.

The Cost of Contamination in Your Recycling CartMore than a third of items placed in recycling containers are contaminating clean recyclable material. In order for the City of Santa Ana to comply with State mandates and increase recycling, we need to clean up what goes in the recycling cart. Too many of the wrong items or dirty items are ending up in recycling bins. This contamination makes sorting more difficult and more costly and often results in recyclables being ruined, meaning they have to be sent to a landfill.
When you recycle, remember these two rules:1. Put the right items into the bin: paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, glass, cartons and metal cans.2. Don’t put wet, food-soiled or smelly items into the bin. (No diapers!)
To remind residents to “Recycle Right” and keep contamination out of the recycling cart, the City has established a contamination penalty. After contamination is identified within your recycling cart two times, a courtesy notice approved by the City will be left that identifies the contamination. On the third time and every instance thereafter, a contamination penalty of $10 may be assessed by the City on your next trash bill.

Giải Tài Năng Trẻ Làm Bảng Quảng Cáo về Nước Sạch, được Ban Tài Nguyên Nước của Thành Phố Santa Ana tổ chức hàng năm, kết thúc vào ngày 31 tháng Giêng, 2020 với 250 tác phẩm sinh động! Chọn tác phẩm chiến thắng là một nhiệm vụ khó khăn của các giám khảo, đơn giản bởi vì tất cả các tác phẩm tham gia đều tuyệt vời.
Chủ đề của năm nay, “Tưởng Tượng Một Ngày Không Có Nước,” đã khơi dậy trí tưởng tượng và sự sáng tạo của mỗi học sinh để minh họa cuộc sống của các em sẽ bị ảnh hưởng như thế nào nếu không có nước sạch, có sẵn để sử dụng. Các em có thể tắm hoặc đánh răng và sẵn sàng đến trường được không? Bồn cầu không được xả nước. Không có nước để nấu ăn, các em sẽ ăn gì cho bữa tối? Về lâu dài, các em sẽ không có quần áo sạch để mặc và, không còn nước để giúp sản xuất điện, sẽ không có điện để thắp sáng, không có điện để chạy tủ lạnh và tất cả các đồ điện gia dụng khác trong nhà các em.
Đó chỉ là một số cách để thấy nước rất cần thiết cho cuộc sống hàng ngày của chúng ta. Thông qua dự án sáng tạo này, học sinh nhận ra rằng các em nghiễm nhiên sử dụng nước sạch mà không biết ơn, củng cố cam kết của các em trong việc nhận thức được giá trị và trách nhiệm bảo tồn nguồn tài nguyên quý giá này.
Vì quy định ở nhà trong đại dịch COVID-19, lễ trao giải đặc biệt và công nhận giải bị hủy bỏ. Tuy nhiên, tất cả các em tham gia đã nhận được một chứng chỉ đặc biệt gửi qua bưu điện. Danh hiệu và giải thưởng, từ thẻ quà tặng đến Nintendo Switch và iPad, đã được trao cho 12 em vào chung kết và những em giành được giải thưởng cao nhất. Students Citywide Learn the Value of Clean, Accessible Water Through Creative Contest
Alumnos de toda la Ciudad aprenden el valor de agua limpia y accesible a través de un concurso creativoSanta Ana anuncia al ganador de este año del Concurso del póster para aguaEl concurso juvenil del Póster para agua que auspicia cada año la División de Recursos Hídricos de la Ciudad de Santa Ana concluyó el 31 de enero del 2020 con 250 coloridas participaciones. Elegir los posters ganadores fue una tarea difícil para los jueces, ya que todas las participaciones eran simplemente maravillosas.
El tema de este año “Imagina un día sin agua,” provocó la imaginación y creatividad de cada alumno para ilustrar cómo se pueden ver afectadas sus vidas sin acceso a agua limpia. ¿Podrían bañarse o cepillar sus dientes para alistarse e irse a la escuela? Los sanitarios no bajarían. Sin agua para poder cocinar, ¿que estarían comiendo para cenar? En poco tiempo no tendrían ropa limpia para vestir y, sin más agua para producir electricidad, no habría electricidad para encender las luces, el refrigerador y todos los demás artículos en sus casas.
Estas son sólo algunas formas en cómo el agua es esencial para nuestra vida diaria. A través de este proyecto creativo, los alumnos han reconocido cómo el acceso al agua limpia se ha dado por sentado, reforzando el compromiso a valorar y conservar este precioso recurso.
Debido al mandato de quedarse en casa por el virus COVID-19, la ceremonia de premiación y la recepción fueron canceladas. Sin embargo, todos los participantes recibieron un certificado especial por correo. Los trofeos y premios que iban desde certificados de regalo hasta Nintendo Switches y iPads, fueron enviados a los 12 finalistas y los ganadores del premio mayor. ¡Felicitemos a estos talentosos ganadores de entre 5 y 18 años por sus logros!

Santa Ana Announces This Year’s Youth Water Poster Contest WinnersThe Youth Water Poster Contest, held each year by the City of Santa Ana Water Resources Division, concluded on January 31, 2020 with 250 colorful entries! Choosing the winning posters was a difficult task for the judges because all entries were simply amazing.
This year’s theme, “Imagine A Day Without Water,” sparked each student’s imagination and creativity to illustrate how their lives would be impacted without accessible, clean water. Could they shower or brush their teeth to get ready for school? Toilets wouldn’t flush. With no water to use in cooking, what would they be eating for dinner? In time, they wouldn’t have clean clothes to wear and, with no more water to help produce electricity, there would be no electricity to power the lights, the refrigerator and all the other appliances in their homes.
These are only some of the ways that water is essential to our day-to-day lives. Through this creative project, students recognized how access to clean water is taken for granted, reinforcing their commitment to valuing and conserving this precious resource.
Due to the COVID-19 stay-at-home mandate, the special awards ceremony and reception were cancelled. However, all participants received a special certificate by mail. Trophies and prizes, ranging from gift certificates to Nintendo Switches and iPads, were delivered to the 12 finalists and grand prize winners. Let’s congratulate these talented winners, ages 5-18, for their achievement!

Jerome Park Gets a Little Bit Bigger!Through a State of California Proposition 84 State Water Bond Grant, a 33,000 square foot section of asphalt paved street which formerly divided Jerome Park was removed and converted into passive, landscaped, open space.
Fifteen years ago, bollards were installed to close Center Street between Monte Vista and McFadden Avenues. These bollards, or short, sturdy posts, were meant to stop vehicular traffic in an effort to address safety concerns from children running across the street mid-block to access park space on both sides of the street. Recently, the City and community agreed to permanently abandon the street and conceived the “Center Street Urban Greening” concept, which connected and expanded the park area. Physical improvements included infilling the street, adding a permeable walkway, construction of a new concrete plaza/event area which connects the ballfields, a large bio-swale and raingarden to handle stormwater runoff, drought-tolerant landscaping, drip irrigation, pedestrian level lighting and site furnishings.

Hace quince años se instalaron bolardos para cerrar la calle Center entre las avenidas Monte Vista y McFadden. Be the Solution to Water Pollution!Did you know that everything that enters the City’s storm drain system flows untreated into the ocean? Stormwater can convey pollutants such as trash, sediment, oil and bacteria that are harmful to wildlife and the environment. Do your part to protect our creeks, rivers and beaches by following the tips below:
• Always use a drip pan when conducting vehicle maintenance to prevent any automotive fluids from spilling onto your driveway or into the street or gutter.
• Clean up pet waste and dispose of it in the trash. • Check to make sure you are not over-irrigating your landscape and water
is not flowing into the gutter.• When washing your car, use minimal water and biodegradable soap.
Whenever possible, avoid washing soapy water into the street. Instead, direct it toward a landscaped area where it can be absorbed into the ground.
• Keep trash can lids closed to avoid litter being blown into the street or gutter.
• Always follow directions on pesticide labels and never use more than specified. Avoid applying pesticides prior to rain events.

We placed fourth in the “Best Municipal Water” category at the 30th Annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, the largest and longest running competition dedicated to preserving and protecting drinking water.

Reciclaje obligatorio para negocios y propiedades multifamiliaresLa ley estatal de California (Proyecto de Ley 341) hace obligatorio el reciclaje para negocios que generan 4 o más yardas cúbicas de basura por semana, y propiedades multifamiliares con cinco o más unidades. Bajo la AB 341, los negocios y propiedades reciclan papel, cajas, botellas y contenedores, así como artículos que pueden ser únicos para sus operaciones.

Mandatory Recycling for Businesses and Multifamily Properties

California state law (Assembly Bill 341) makes recycling mandatory for businesses that generate 4 or more cubic yards of waste per week and multifamily properties with five or more units. Under AB 341, those businesses and properties must recycle paper, boxes, bottles and containers, as well as items that may be unique to their operations.
In addition, under Assembly Bill 1826, California businesses are required to reduce the amount of organics sent to landfills. Organics include both food scraps and yard debris. Organics recycling is mandatory for businesses and multifamily properties that generate 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste (trash, recyclables and organic waste) per week. At this time, multifamily properties are required to recycle yard debris but do not have to provide food waste recycling.
The City provides free education and assistance to owners, property managers and businesses to implement recycling programs to meet these mandates. EcoNomics, Inc., a recycling services consultant, will assist with free, on-site technical assistance to help your business or multifamily property comply with AB 341 and/or AB 1826. This hands-on, site-specific guidance has proven to be the best way to implement sustainable and cost-effective recycling programs.

When Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day or Memorial Day are observed on a weekday, collections for the remainder of the week will be delayed one day.
To maximize the benefit of street sweeping services, when your trash and recycling collection day falls on a street sweeping day, your carts should be placed on the curb or in your driveway, not in the street. Cart handles should always face your house.
