"Last week I was shopping for new clothes at an outlet mall. As I entered the various stores, I was greeted by a sign that read “End of Season Sale.” I found this to be quite odd. It was only recently that the weather in Chicago had begun to feel like summer. I didn’t have need for shorts or t-shirts before then. I had only started to get my summer wardrobe together and according to most of the store’s signs, I had totally missed summer! The upside of this was that there were some good deals to be had. So, if you see me walking around the neighborhood with new threads, you’ll know why. The “End of Season Sale” phenomenon is simply an extension of what we see at other times of the year. We are confronted with Christmas displays before Halloween is even done. It’s a miracle that we can even squeeze Thanksgiving in. “I missed it!” “I can’t catch up!” “The world is passing me by!” These are some of the sentiments we may feel from the continual time warp we find ourselves in. When we enter the sacred space that is Saint Andrew Church, we enter into God’s time. Actually, time doesn’t exist in God’s world! So, we need not worry that we might miss something, or feel as we’re being left behind. Our God is a loving God who patiently waits for all of us as we make our way though the journey of faith. I pray that everyone who comes through our doors may be able to take a reprieve from the rush of daily life and experience the grace of God, that is always present and available to us, whenever we need it, whenever we’re ready. We’ll never miss out. We won’t be left behind. We’ll never have an “End of Season” sign at Saint Andrew Parish.
Hangouts are on hiatus for the summer, but we
will continue to get together for fun events -

Kairos Retreat for high school upperclassmen.
The North Side Kairos has been a collaborative effort by Chicago
parishes for nearly 20 years. The retreat brings together Kairos
leaders from different high school programs around Chicago to
provide a coed Kairos retreat for students who do not attend a
Catholic high school.
The retreat is now accepting registration for youth attendees. To
be eligible to attend, a youth participant must have completed
their Sophomore, Junior, or Senior year of high school this past
academic year (2018-2019).
To register for the retreat or to learn more, please visit the
webpage for the retreat at www.standrew.org/kairos2019.
This week’s gospel reading is one
that is familiar to many of us. The
Parable of the Good Samaritan is
such a well-known story, in fact, that
all 50 states have some version of a
“Good Samaritan law,” which
protects well-meaning citizens from
liability under certain circumstances.
You can even find these laws in
countries around the world!
The details of the Good Samaritan
parable are important, because both
the priest and the Levite have very
good reasons for not assisting the
man on the road. According to their
elevated positions in the Jewish
temple, the priest and the Levite are
prohibited from touching corpses at
the risk of becoming unclean. Ritual
purification processes took up to a
week before they could return to their
duties, which could prove to be a
burden for the local community.
At the same time, Jewish law
upholds the preservation of life
above all other duties. Even at the
risk of defiling themselves, assisting
someone in need is required of both
these men. Though the victim may
have appeared to be deceased, both
the priest and the Levite shirk their
duties when they fail to stop. The
man questioning Jesus in the gospel
is “a scholar of the law” (Luke 10:25)
and would know this - in fact, he
might have been a Levite himself. It
would have been clear to him that
the first two passers-by were looking
for a loophole to get out of an
inconvenience.
In the first reading, Moses refers to a
command that is “already in your
mouths and in your hearts; you have
only to carry it out” (Dt 30:14). Even
in Deuteronomy, one of the Jewish
books of Instruction, we receive the
advice that not all laws are written
down - some live within us.
Every day our hearts push us to help,
but our minds come up with a
hundred reasons why we can’t. Over
time, we become accustomed to
making excuses and our conscience
grows easier to ignore. But when we
pay attention, when we don’t look
away, when we reach out to help, we
are practicing the very best law:
Love God, and love your neighbor.
At every stage of life, we engage our members to learn. From our Blue-Ribbon school to our K-8
Religious Education program, preparation for Marriage and Baptism to opportunities for young adults and
parents, we are dedicated to fostering deeper knowledge of God and self as we grow step by step.

As the weather turns warm, we spend more time outside.
The north side of Chicago is blessed with beautiful parks,
tree-lined streets, and extensive beaches along Lake
Michigan. From water sports to little league, visits to our
manicured zoo and walks through native plantings, there
is something for everyone.
Our beautiful planet is a gift from God, which God puts
both under our control and in our hands. (Genesis 1:28).
We have dominion over the earth, but how often does that
dominion lead to domination? When humanity focuses on
productivity and profit, the earth suffers. The land is
scarred, the seas are polluted, and the air we breathe is
heavy with the fumes of industry.
To ensure that there really is “something for everyone,” it
is one of the pillars of Catholic Social Teaching that we
practice Care for God’s Creation. Fair distribution and
preservation of natural resources ensures that not only is
there enough to go around, but that we are able to pass
on God’s gift to the next generation. Our care for the
planet is a demonstration of compassion and care for one
another. “Everything is connected. Concern for the
environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for
our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment
to resolving the problems of society.” (Laudato Si, 91).
During the week of July 28 through August 2, 2019 we
will change our daily Mass schedule. The sacrifice of the
Mass will be celebrated on Monday and Friday and
Christ’s presence in word and sacrament will be shared
through Communion Services on Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday.

Saint Andrew attracts people from all over the country and world who come to live in this neighborhood.
Because of this extraordinary juncture, many have questions about becoming Catholic or completing

communion with the Catholic Church, Saint Andrew parish is here to help. Have them visit
www.standrew.org/rcia or contact David Heimann, our Pastoral Associate at [email protected].
The inquiry process is now open and will continue until September for the upcoming Rites of Christian
Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please share this information with anyone you know who may be interested.
