3RD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

Today we begin a continuous reading of Mark’s Gospel that will take us through this part of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. Today’s Gospel reading begins with Jesus preaching the Kingdom of God in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist. Jesus begins the time of fulfillment; the Kingdom of God is already here. Jesus calls his first disciples, four fishermen (Simon, Andrew, James and John) inviting them to learn from him. We are told that they left their fishing immediately. Their father, Zebedee, was left behind in the boat. Mark’s Gospel is told with a great sense of urgency and immediacy. Jesus is a person of action, and time is of the essence. The fishermen immediately put aside their livelihood to become Jesus’ disciples. The Kingdom of God is here and now. How might our lives (indeed, our world) be different if we more fully shared this sense of the immediacy of God’s kingdom?

Hoy comenzamos una lectura continua del Evangelio de Marcos que seguirá durante esta parte del Tiempo Ordinario. La lectura del evangelio de hoy comienza con Jesús predicando el Reino de Dios a continuación de la predicación de Juan el Bautista. Jesús comienza el tiempo del cumplimiento. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “ when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Free pregnancy testing is available at the Center and all donations received this weekend will be for the John Egnew Ultrasound Fund. John died last year and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and a pro-life advocate. Guiding Star Marshalltown hopes to purchase a 2D ultrasound machine to provide mothers with an image of their baby.

SISTER PARISH NEWS A HUGE thank you to each of you who were an Advent prayer partner. We hope to make this an annual event. For us it made the

distance between our Sister Parish, St. Martin de Porres in Santiago de Maria, El Salvador and St. Francis of Assisi in Marshalltown merely a prayer and an outstretched hand away. Over 40 prayer warriors shared their hearts this Advent season. The parishioners became present in our lives as well as ours in theirs. EMERGENCY FOOD BOX The Emergency Food Box would like to express our sincere appreciation to your congregation for their many donations of food during the year 2020. Your generous donations make it possible for us to help meet the emergency food needs of people throughout Marshall County. St. Francis of Assisi donated 720 pounds of food to the EFB in 2020. NOTICIAS DE NUESTRA PARROQUIA HERMANA Un GRAN “gracias!” a cada uno de ustedes que participó en el programa de compañeros de oración. Esperamos que esto sea un evento anual. Para nosotros, se acortó la distancia entre nuestra parroquia hermana de San Martín de Porres en Santiago de María, El Salvador y la de San Francisco de Asís en Marshalltown – la distancia es apenas una oración y una mano amiga. ¡Los feligreses se hicieron presentes en nuestras vidas como nosotros los fuimos en las suyas!

LA DESPENSA DE COMIDA La Despensa de Comida desea expresar nuestro sincero agradecimiento a su congregación por sus numerosas donaciones de alimentos durante el año 2020. Sus generosas donaciones nos permiten ayudar a satisfacer las necesidades de alimentos de emergencia de las personas en todo el condado de Marshall. San Francisco de Asís donó 720 libras de alimentos a la EFB en 2020. Gracias por su generosidad. A LOS QUIEN DECORAN NUESTRAS IGLESIAS Gracias a los voluntarios invisibles que se toman el tiempo para decorar nuestras iglesias. Nos gustaría agradecer a quienes decoraron para Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y la Navidad. Su esfuerzo hace que nuestro espacio de adoración sea tan bonito.
