Do you know the worth of your under-utilized or aging heavy equipment? Your machines are proba-bly more valuable than you

think, especially if you’ve kept the items in good working condition. Unfor-tunately, heavy equipment that is unused, rarely used

and aging loses value the longer it sits in a fleet yard. The good news is that there are plenty of eager buyers around the world who are

willing to take used equip-ment off your hands, even during the off season. But before you put equipment up for sale, there are four

important steps to take in order to maximize an item’s resale value and get the most out of the sale of your used equipment.1. Maintain equipment

Basic maintenance can make a big difference in the quality of your equipment and its resale value. If an item is in poor condition, the pool of buyers inter-ested will be significantly smaller than if the machine has been taken care of properly.

Owners that imple-ment a preventative maintenance program im-mediately after purchas-ing equipment ensure that items stay in the best pos-sible condition over time and can then offer buyers reliable machines. Basic maintenance can prevent the failure of major equip-ment parts, especially hy-draulic components. Hy-draulic cylinders can leak oil or other pressurized fluids if bushings or seals rot, wear or crack.

A preventative mainte-nance program should fo-cus on:• Repairing mechanical,

structural and cosmetic issues as they arise;

• Keeping engines well-oiled and hydraulic fluid

at proper levels, and changing fluids as per manufacturer recom-mendations;

• Replacing parts that have visible corrosion or damage, such as rusting hardware and broken windows;

• Recapping or replacing tattered tires at the first signs of wear;

• Keeping a schedule and record of all equipment services.

2. Clean equipmentCleaning equipment on

a regular basis not only prevents residue buildup and keeps it in top shape, but also improves the re-sale value once it is time to auction items. Over time, grease hardens and needs to be scraped off ar-eas around knuckles and on booms. Mud and veg-etation can build up in and around tracks, especially during the winter and early spring, therefore, it’s rec-ommended owners clean these areas often. Remov-ing dirt, grime and debris from both the interior and exterior of a machine keeps it looking its best and op-erating efficiently. Thor-oughly cleaning the equip-ment both inside and out is

Effi cient hydraulics, loads of cooling capacity, 300 hp, extremely low groundpressure and legendary Tigercat build quality for highest uptime and machineavailability in severe duty ROW pipeline and exploration applications.

Equipment Overhaul: Steps To Take Before Selling

highly recommended prior to sale as a clean unit of-ten obtains a higher selling price.3. Repair equipment

It’s important to know when to make equipment repairs and when to skip the investment. There is not a universal guide to the right cost/value ratio, but sellers should remember that most buyers will be looking for equipment in the best possible condition.

In addition to maintain-ing hydraulics, all major components, such as the engine and transmission, should function properly. Before putting equip-ment up for auction, sell-ers should research recent sales of similar items to as-sess the potential value. A seller should consider mak-ing only the most neces-sary repairs if the estimat-ed cost of repairs and the original amount invested in the item outweighs the projected return. Where equipment requires repairs involving too much invest-ment, the seller should consider selling the ma-chine for parts.4. Find the ideal selling platform

What seller wouldn’t

want to save time and money when disposing of equipment? Using an on-line marketplace, sellers eliminate transportation costs associated with physi-cal auctions because equip-ment is sold from where it sits. Additionally, owners can list equipment when the time is right for their business in order to take advantage of the cash flow for equipment required for future work.

Inspection reports can instill greater confidence when buying equip-ment sight unseen. These should include photos and detail features and the current condition of the equipment. Guaran-tees behind the inspection report provide assurance that what a buyer sees on-line is what they will get upon delivery. When bid-ders have greater confi-dence in purchasing over the Internet, sellers can attract a larger audience and potentially a higher selling price.

Online auctions also of-fer global reach. Although it may be the off season for the seller, online auc-tions appeal to buyers in areas with immediate or year-round needs for par-

ticular types of equipment. Online marketplaces reach developing countries as well, where the demand for older, less advanced equip-ment can be higher.

Owners and fleet man-agers need to consider the impact of depreciation on value when letting under-utilized and aging equip-ment sit in their yards. Taking simple steps to maintain your heavy equip-ment allows you to reach a greater number of bidders and helps buyers who may not be able to afford new top-of-the-line equipment. Disposing of the equipment in an efficient manner, via an online marketplace, will also take the hassle out of the selling process and pro-vide greater value.

New provincial tidal energy regulations will allow early stage projects to connect to Nova Sco-tia’s power grid.

Energy Minister An-drew Younger, on Janu-ary 21, announced the regulations that will help developers invest hun-dreds of millions of dol-lars to build a new re-newable industry in the province.

“Nova Scotia is be-coming a world leader in innovation for in-stream tidal turbines and other emerging technologies, and I am fully committed

to advancing this indus-try here and around the globe,” said Mr. Young-er. “I made a commit-ment to the tidal industry that we would get these regulations done by the end of January and I am pleased we now have them approved.

“These regulations will help ensure the in-dustry can invest money and create jobs to in-stall 15 to 20 megawatts of tidal-power capacity in Nova Scotia over the next five or six years, and more in years to come.”

The government worked with industry to develop the regulations for large-scale tidal de-velopments connected to the electricity grid with a capacity of at least 500 kilowatts.

The regulations were developed after the prov-ince’s Utility and Review Board set a feed-in tariff for the tidal projects last fall.

It will likely be early 2015 before a turbine, or a group of turbines, are in the water at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) in the Minas Channel and producing electricity on a trial basis. The timeline estimate will be updated after successful bidders for berths at FORCE are announced this Spring. b

ACCIONA has signed a contract to supply 34 turbines for a 102 MW wind farm in the Cana-dian province of Nova Scotia. It will carry out the construction, inter-nal electrical infrastruc-tures and assembly, and will also undertake the operation and mainte-nance of the facility.

“We’re pleased to apply our full range of wind energy services to provide the best value for this project.”

The South Canoe wind farm, which will be the largest in Nova Scotia, has been de-veloped by three local companies: Oxford Fro-zen Foods, Minas Basin Pulp and Power and the utility company Nova Scotia Power, to which the power generated will be sold. It will use ACCIONA Windpower AW3000/116 wind tur-bines, each with a capac-ity of 3 MW, hub height of 92m, and a rotor di-ameter of 116 metres.

The facility will sup-ply electricity equiva-lent to the consumption of 32,000 homes and will help the province of Nova Scotia reach its re-newable energy targets.

“A full range of wind power services”

“ACCIONA was able to deliver what the South Canoe Project team asked for: a complete so-lution including highly-reliable and high-capaci-ty turbines, construction services and operations and maintenance,” said Ilya Hartmann, CEO of ACCIONA Energy North America. “We’re pleased to apply our full range of wind energy services to provide the best value for this project.”

The supply of wind turbines was awarded to ACCIONA follow-ing a rigorous selection process and a detailed analysis of its experi-ence in the sector. AC-CIONA Windpower North America CEO En-rique Teruel says the company “is proud to be part of the South Ca-noe Wind Project and to continue expand-ing the track record of our AW3000 turbine in North America.”

Almost 1,500 MW in orders for the AW3000

To date, orders for the AW3000 turbines amount to 1,491 MW; the machines are des-tined for wind farms in

nine different countries. Nearly half this figure corresponds to wind farms in North America, and 78% of the total ca-pacity will be supplied to customers outside the ACCIONA Group.

ACCIONA Windpow-er’s wind turbines come with four rotor diameter options: 100, 109, 116 and 125 meters to suit the conditions at each site, and are mounted on steel and concrete towers with a height of between 87.5 and 140 meters.

Third project with AW turbines in Canada

South Canoe will be the third wind farm in-corporating ACCIONA Windpower turbines in Canada’s Maritime Provinces.

The ACCIONA Group subsidiary signed a con-tract for the supply of AW3000/116 turbines for a 30 MW wind farm on Prince Edward Is-land, which is currently in the assembly phase. The 45 MW Lamèque wind farm in the New Brunswick province has been in operation since 2011; it is owned by AC-CIONA Energía and is equipped with 1.5 MW AW1500 turbines.

As an owner, ACCIO-NA also participates in three other wind farms in Canada: Magrath and Chin Chute in the prov-ince of Alberta (both 30 MW) and Ripley in On-tario (76 MW). b

A road building compa-ny in Argentina faced a se-rious problem. A new road had to be built but there was no fine grade mate-rial available in this area because the next quarry was too far and the only available material was very dirty. Rockster Recycler offered the perfect solu-tion for this requirement - the impact crusher R1100 in combination with the scalping screen RSS515.

Alquimac SRL is a well-established engineer-ing and road construction company, located in the middle of Argentina and employing 450 people. They have a variety of huge road building proj-ects and therefore they need reliable and power-ful machines.First decision - the purchase of a R1100

The ease of mainte-nance and service and the optimal dimensions of the Rockster crushers were good arguments for

the Austrian manufactur-er. Also the skyrocketing costs of fuel and transport in the last years and the great distances in Argen-tina made the decision on investing in the mo-bile impact crusher R1100 equipped with the screen box RS94 and the return belt RB85.

"Because of the 32 tons total weight, a mod-ern and robust design and an impressive crush-ing performance of about 350 to/h, the R1100 is the perfect product for large-scale jobs where you still need a compact and transport-friendly machine", says the CEO of Alquimac, Mauricio Pascucci. Furthermore the R1100 is equipped with a fully hydrau-lic system and features a 2-step pre-screener. This ensures beneath a maximum pre-screening quality also an increase of throughput rate, a reduction of wear costs

and a perfect separation of final material. With the additional screen box and return belt the road constructor is able to produce high quality grains in one workflow. Second decision - the additional screening plant RSS515

A challenging proj-ect was a 50 km road building project where there was no possibil-ity to get quality mate-rial and there were no quarries within a 30 km radius. So Alquimac had to find a solution that fits these exceptional conditions. The available material, limestone with more than 80 percent fines, needed to be pre-pared in a cost-effective way to high quality ma-terial. ditionally to the R1100 impact crusher, which is the perfect product for separating very difficult material. The robust de-sign with low machine weight, the low feeding height and the fuel sav-ings up to 25 percent im-pressed the customers. “All Rockster machines are equipped with hy-drostatic power, exactly delivered when it's need-ed. Moreover they have a fully hydraulic operat-ing system and compact transport dimensions” argued Mr. Holt.

The RSS515 has two side conveyors which transport two already separated pre-cut mate-rials (0/6 mm and 6/19 mm) and one oversize belt which conveys the clean stone into the Rock-ster crusher. With this system Alquimac is get-ting a 100 percent defined final grain. “Now we can increase drastically the throughput of our Rock-ster R1100 and meet our production targets”, says Mr. Pascussi.

The combination of the scalping screen RSS515 and the mobile Impact crusher R1100 is the perfect solu-tion for Alquimac. b

Montabert, a designer and manufacturer of hy-draulic demolition and drilling attachments and pneumatic equipment, has announced plans to further extend its brand into North America and replace the Tramac brand name on se-lect products.

The rebranded prod-ucts will include hydraulic breakers, plate compac-tors, drilling attachments and pneumatic equipment – all most recently branded “Tramac by Montabert,” which the French attach-ment manufacturer has been using to establish a North American Montabert brand presence. Montabert officials believe the joint branding effort has pro-vided a strong foundation for the full North American brand launch. Simply put, customers who previously purchased Tramac prod-ucts in North America were always purchasing Monta-bert products, just branded Tramac for distribution

purposes. The Montabert name will now be used worldwide.

The transition will take place this winter and into 2014, culminating with a heightened promotion of rebranded products at the highly anticipated CONEX-PO-CON/AGG event in Las Vegas.

“In many ways, this rep-resents a brand extension opposed to a brand transi-tion,” said Stephane Gir-oudon, Business Manager for Montabert North Amer-ica. “We have developed an aggressive integrated marketing communications plan to address the brand’s underlying value propo-sition, including its long history of innovation and technological leadership as well as its experience in providing customers across the globe with superior equipment solutions. We are confident that our ef-forts will help Montabert garner the brand recogni-

tion it deserves in the Unit-ed States.”

As a result of the im-pending brand transition, existing “Tramac by Mon-tabert” customers and deal-ers will benefit from direct

connection to and commu-nication with the Monta-bert factory in addition to a heightened level of product support and service. Impor-tant to note, all Tramac by Montabert products will re-tain the iconic green color

that has come to symbolize the global attachment man-ufacturer that first invented the hydraulic breaker in 1964.

Montabert expects the brand transition to be com-plete by March 31, 2014. b

GOMACO, the world-wide leader in concrete paving technology, cre-ated the largest spread of concrete slipform paving equipment at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014. They had 13 machines in their largest display ever, in-cluding the next genera-tion GHP-2800 slipform paver and next generation Commander III.

G+ on GOMACO’s full line of concrete paving equipment means unpar-alleled accuracy, perfor-mance and precision set up. G+ has also brought about many innovations to the GOMACO line, including telematics, an on-board camera, power-optimized cooling and engine packages, and so much more. The op-tional on-board camera is a new device to moni-tor designated areas of the slipforming process. The camera can be posi-tioned anywhere around the GOMACO paver and feeds live video to the G+ display on the con-sole. G+ controls ac-commodate telematics for remote engine and machine monitoring. New optimized cooling packages have the hy-draulic fan controlled by G+ to adapt cooling needs to job-site condi-

tions for both a quiet and efficient operation. It has improved fuel ef-ficiency with a power-optimized engine and load-sensed hydraulic circuits. The new GBox on GOMACO legs allows improved steering and grade with G+ controls. It’s part of GOMACO’s electronic and hydrau-lic initiative. GBox fea-tures a new location for the slave controller and proportional valves, re-duces hose and wiring needs, eases serviceabil-ity and troubleshooting, and provides easy access with a horizontal swing door at ground level. It’s all part of the power and limitless potential of the exclusive, new GOMA-CO G+ control system. G+ controls make all of these advancements possible on the next gen-eration GHP-2800, next generation Commander III, and all the machines in GOMACO’s full line of concrete equipment.

Along with the G+ ad-vantage, GOMACO also showcased improvements to their full line of con-crete slipform pavers. The next generation GHP-2800 was equipped with the 5400 series paving mold and the rear loading, front inserting 5400 series bar inserter. The mold can be equipped with telescop-ing inserts and telescoping end sections for easy width changes. The GHP-2800 featured new 90 degree tracks to reposition the legs into transport mode, get on or off stringline, or to avoid obstacles on the job site. The legs also fea-ture hydraulically-adjust-able pivots for adjusting the paver’s leg position on-the-go. G+ Ground Control on GOMACO pav-ers offers an operator’s display at ground level with the same G+ graphi-cal interface as the main operator’s station. Ground personnel can see every-thing on the screen that the operator can see, and also have the ability to fine tune the paver, make settings adjustments, and monitor the opera-tion from the ground. The small and handy Mini-Mote available with G+ provides on-the-spot assis-

tance for fine adjustment of the paver’s set up. G+ Connect features an entire library of sensor capabili-ties for controlling slope, grade and steer. The Sen-sor Library includes ca-pabilities for paving with 3D systems, laser control, sonic sensors, rotary sen-sors, slope sensors, and all of their set-up require-ments.

The next generation Commander III with rede-signed frame and opera-tor’s platform including a new pivoting control console was introduced at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014. The frame accom-modates Tier 4 engines and their cooling packag-es. The placement of the engine in the framework is reversed to provide in-creased operator visibility and the redesigned engine shroud provides easy ac-cess to service and fill points. The pivoting oper-ator’s console allows the operator to have hands-on control and ultimate visibility no matter what application is being slip-formed or the direction of travel. Along with the increased operator visibil-ity, the next generation Commander III offers in-creased operator comfort. The operator’s platform is now isolated to eliminate vibration. It’s also quieter to work on the platform or around the machine. The Commander III has the new optimized cooling package and power-opti-mized engine. The excel-lent fuel efficiency com-bined with an increased fuel capacity allows an uninterrupted day of pav-ing on the project.

GOMACO showcased a full paving train in their booth, including a PS-2600 placer/spreader, the next generation four-track GHP-2800 slipform paver, and new four-track T/C-5600 texture/cure machine. The G+ advantage for high-production curb and gutter, sidewalk, safety barrier, half-width and full-width paving, variable width pav-ing, and paving with auto-matic dowel bar insertion was displayed. The new-est updates for the GSI, the GOMACO Smoothness In-dicator tool for reading and achieving optimum ride-ability results, was show-cased. The job-proven C-450 bridge deck finisher rounded out GOMACO’s CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 display. b

St. Isidore Asphalt Ltd. was among the success-

ful bidders on the project, having been awarded two contracts totalling about $6.8 million. The contracts are pretty typical in terms of size and scope for the company, which has been in business since 1969 and currently employs about 100 skilled tradesmen, pro-fessional engineers, certi-fied technologists, estima-tors and office staff.

“It’s about average size for us. We’ve been do-ing these types of projects since 1995,” says Grading Division Supervisor Ermel Hachey.

The company has a proven track record for its capacity to meet private, commercial, institutional, municipal and provincial government requirements, and is fully equipped to handle just about any size project with its array of heavy equipment, which includes asphalt spreaders, backhoes, dozers, excava-tors, loaders, milling ma-chines, rollers, articulated trucks, concrete trucks and dump trucks.

Estimated at $3 million, the first project started in September, 2013 and in-volves the construction of a new overpass and approach for the realign-ment of Lavigne Street in Caraquet. The new bypass alignment will be a two-lane route south of the existing Route 11 with an interchange at Legère Road and a grade separation at

Laving Road. It’s approxi-mately 13 km in length, stretching from du Portage Road to Bertrand.

“We’re basically doing the whole job from A-Z, with the exception of the aggregate and asphalt,” Hachey points out. “Over 200,000 tons of borrow will be trucked in from a site near the project by local private companies to build access roads for residents only in the construction area.”

The second project is es-timated at $3.8-million and involves clearing, drainage and construction up to sub-grade elevation of the new Route 11. Clearing of the 4-5 km area got underway mid-March and is expected to take up to four weeks to complete. It includes all ac-cess roads, ramps and ap-proaches.

Water will be temporar-ily diverted from an exist-ing brook until such time as drainage pipes, ranging in size from 1500-3000 millimetres in width and 30-40 metres in length, are installed. An additional 250,000 tons of borrow will be hauled in for that por-tion of the project.

Construction wrapped up right on schedule last fall and, weather permit-ting, will start back up again the first or second week of May on both proj-ects with a tentative com-pletion date slated for the end of summer 2014.

Approximately 10-15 local tradesmen will be

working on the first project and 25-30 on the second. Projects like this are impor-tant to the local economy and lead to both job cre-ation and retention.

“This will help compa-nies to keep our expertise here in New Brunswick,” stresses Hachey.

St. Isidore Asphalt Ltd. will have a battery of heavy equipment at each job site including excavators, doz-ers, loaders of all different sizes, articulated trucks, ridged frame trucks, com-pactors and cranes. How-ever, trucking is being turned over to local private companies and off roads trucks will be rented when necessary.

Ownership of facilities ensures both quality con-trol and consistency at St. Isidore Asphalt Ltd., which has earned a reputation for its top-notch work and workers over the past 45 years.

“We have very good su-pervisors on-site and em-ployees with lots of experi-ence,” assures Hachey.

Richard Losier is founder and President of the company which con-sists of four different divi-sions — asphalt, crushing, grading and a portable asphalt plant that can be moved in just four to five days. Its main office is located in St. Isidore, but there’s also an office in Bathurst.

The company has worked on a number of similar projects in the past,

including three sections of Route 8 (Marysville Bypass); two sections of Route 7 (Welsford), five sections of Route 1 High-way near St. Stephen’s and a 30 km stretch of four-lane

highway between Moncton and Fredericton.

The Caraquet Bypass Project is part of the New Brunswick Government’s $466 million Capital Budget for 2013-2014 that focused

on maintaining existing as-sets and completing proj-ects already underway. It is hoped the new bypass will improve traffic flow and increase safety along that stretch of the highway. b

The ambitious multi-billion-dollar project to widen the Panama Canal is having wide reaching impact on industries tied to the world’s shipping industry and tower cranes are certainly no exception. The expansion will mean that ports need to be able to handle bigger ships, more cargo and faster turn-arounds. High capacity tower cranes, like the Lin-den Comansa 30LC1450 re-cently erected in Paducah, Kentucky are helping busy ports like the Paducah/

McCracken County River-port Authority (Riverport) to deal with today’s vessel traffic and to be ready for tomorrow.

For nearly 40 years, a 20-ton capacity Linden 8000 flat-top tower crane has handled incoming and outgoing freight on the banks of the Tennessee River where the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers meet. The Riverport has 48 total acres of space and 2,300 cumulative feet of river frontage. The port boasts on-site warehouse capacity

exceeding 40,000 tons, out-side storage yards and ad-jacent fleeting and switch-ing service.

“Our Linden 8000 was erected in 1977 and served us well over a considerable length of time,” says Ken Canter, Executive Director of the Riverport. “The 20-ton lifting capacity simply wasn’t enough for where we anticipate our port to go in the future. With our new Linden Comansa 30LC1450, we have greater market capabilities for the container on barge move-

ments to the Ohio Valley. It’s also pretty impressive to have the largest flat-top tower crane in North America ready to serve traffic to our port.”A Riverport on the Move

In addition to its cen-tral and accessible location with easy rail and highway access, the Riverport has two dock facilities and can handle up to three barges with different products quickly and efficiently, in-cluding bulk and general cargo. The facility has a conveyor system with a 30” belt that can move 500 tons per hour to warehouse or outdoor storage. It is be-coming more and more of a strategic and economic advantage by moving prod-ucts through this up-and-coming inland hub.

“When we were look-ing to expand our port and add a marine cell,” notes Canter, “Linden Comansa was always one of the top contenders in our search for a new crane. Both Lin-den and Linden Comansa have proven themselves with service, competitive

pricing and reliability. We are also looking forward to continuing the partner-ship we have enjoyed with Heede Southeast.”Big Cranes Mean a Big Transition

Before erecting the 30LC1450 in January 2014, Heede Southeast refur-bished the original 1970 series Linden crane in the late 1990’s and continued to provide maintenance.

“In the early days, working with a 60 or 75 ton meter crane that was the first flat-top model erected in North America, we really thought we were doing something special. The Linden 8000 tower crane is such a great tool to move material,” says Heede Southeast President Dennis Kenna. “Now, with new equipment and over 20 years of history with Pa-ducah River Port Author-ity, it just makes sense that we should continue that re-lationship going forward.”

With the United States undergoing one of the most difficult winters in recent memory, getting the mam-

moth crane ready for busi-ness was challenging, but not insurmountable for the “Supermen” on the Pinev-ille, North Carolina-based Heede Southeast team. The crane arrived in Paducah on January 17, 2014 and, despite sub-zero tempera-tures and high winds, the 30LC1450 installation was completed on February 9, 2014.

“Being involved hands on with the installation and commissioning of the largest flat-top tower crane in North America was re-markable,” remarks Ken-na. “With over 40 years in the industry working with Linden and Linden Coman-sa cranes, witnessing that machine moving 62,000 pounds to a radius of 191 ft. was a memorable mo-ment for us.”Tower Crane Technology Stands Tall

While the dramatic size of the 30LC1450 sets it apart, the features that the Linden Comansa flat-top tower cranes provide make it an unparalleled

choice for heavy-lift work and container cargo in an active port. The 200 kW high-speed motor offers a maximum speed of 259 meters per minute and a minimum speed when loading its maximum 48 tons of 21 meters per min-ute. The Powerlift system allows for a 10% improve-ment of the load chart with reduced speeds. This fea-ture, along with anemom-eter and digital indicators, is standard on all Linden Comansa cranes in the LC3000 Series. As an op-tion for the Paducah crane, Linden Comansa America also included a ‘Prohib-ited Zones’ function. The Paducah model is a 48 ton

The Canadian Construc-tion Association (CCA) was encouraged by the continu-ing recognition in the re-cent federal budget of the importance of infrastructure investment and prudent la-bour market development to Canada’s long-term eco-nomic prosperity.

“Sustained investment in infrastructure is criti-cal to Canada’s long-term economic growth,” said Michael Atkinson, Presi-dent of the Canadian Con-struction Association. “The additional federal commit-ments announced today, together with the earlier announced 10-year $53 bil-lion Building Canada Plan effective April 1, 2014, will help governments across Canada continue the pro-cess of infrastructure re-newal and set Canada on the path to a more globally

crane, but can also be con-figured for either 32 or 64 tons.

“The differences in tower crane technology between the old 8000 and the new 30LC1450 are dra-matic,” says Bill Carbeau, Vice President of Business Development for Linden Comansa America. “Digital readouts for wind, radius and weights are clearly dis-played and crane operators can easily monitor all func-tions for proper operation. In addition, the frequency drives for slewing, trolley and hoisting movements allow for much less con-sumption of electricity.”

For enhanced comfort of the crane operator, the 30LC1450 in Paducah has

competitive economy.”The budget announced

an additional $1.3 billion over two years in strategic investments in public infra-structure and transportation services, including $470 million over two years for procurement and project de-livery costs associated with the Windsor-Detroit Interna-tional Crossing.

CCA was also pleased with the government’s fo-cus on further measures to promote apprenticeship training and to assist in the implementation of the new Expression of Interest (EOI) economic immigra-tion system.

Budget 2014 introduces a new interest-free Canada Apprentice Loans program for apprentices in Red Seal trades of up to $4,000 per training period to help de-fray costs associated with

an optional “Panoramic XL” cab. It includes the advantages of the standard “Panoramic” cabin (acous-tic insulation, full view of the load and work area, tinted glass, etc.), but it is half a meter longer. There is enough room for a small refrigerator, an air handling unit and a microwave or any other small appliance. The crane is also equipped with lights to illuminate the jobsite.

With an innovative de-sign that allows the upper part of the jib be folded up and down to save money on transport, the modular design of the LC3000 series enables Linden Comansa to deliver the biggest cranes as a highly affordable solu-

the technical training por-tion of their apprenticeships.

The new EOI system, expected to be based upon an existing Austra-lian system, will likely see foreign-trained immigrants in high demand occupa-tions given preference for permanent entry under existing economic immi-gration programs and will allow prospective appli-cants to pre-register on an online system that could also serve as an excellent recruitment tool for Cana-dian employers.

“The construction in-dustry like many industries in Canada is facing signifi-cant skilled labour short-ages that require both short and long-term solutions,” said Atkinson. b

tion.Ready for the Future

The Paducah/Mc-Cracken County Riverport Authority moves about 875,000 tons of cargo a year, loading and unload-ing approximately 400

barges. While there is not a significant amount of container cargo now, the expectation is that this type of freight will increase with the completion of the Pan-ama Canal. In addition to the expansion of facilities,

including the installation of the Linden Comansa 30LC1450, the Riverport is applying for Foreign Trade Zone designation to further its capabilities in interna-tional shipping and receiv-ing. b

Winter temperatures at Norway’s remote Sy-dvaranger iron ore mine can plunge to –35°C. To keep things moving the mine relies on air dryers, oil-injected rotary screw compressors and oil-free compressors from Atlas Copco. Sydvaranger had three main reasons for choosing Atlas Copco as their supplier: “reliability, life-cycle cost and energy efficiency”.

The Sydvaranger iron ore mine is located in Nor-way’s far north-east, about 400 km above the Arctic Circle. It sits in mountain-

ous terrain above both the small town of Kirkenes and Bøkfjorden, a waterway connected to the nearby Barents Sea.

Einar Berg, Senior Min-ing Advisor, knows every-thing worth knowing about the open pits and the qual-ity of the ore and the rock. “The weather conditions are the biggest challenge for mining in the area,” he says. “The summers are bright and warm, but in the winter we can have temperatures as low as –35 degrees.”Compressed air is the heart of the production

Atlas Copco has deliv-ered air dryers, oil-injected rotary screw compressors and oil-free compressors to the mine. “We could imme-diately see that the extreme temperature conditions required a reliable choice of air dryers,” says Rune Mjørud Hansen, District Manager for Atlas Copco Compressor Technique Scandinavia. “Sydvaranger Gruve has chosen BD-dryers for their plant which gives them clean and dry air with a guaranteed dew point of at least -40°C. Compressed air is the heart of the produc-tion and if the air freezes,

production is brought to a halt.”

The mine’s active pit, Bjørnevatn, is located only two kilometers from the border with Russia. Coarsely crushed ore is transported on an eight kilometre long railway track – the most northerly railroad in Europe – down to Kirkenes. Here it under-goes further milling and separating and is turned into the concentrate that is shipped to smelting plants in Asia or Europe.

“What some consider a remote location may be an advantage for others,” says Berg. The first com-mercial cargo ever to go through the Northern Sea route was iron ore from Sydvaranger on the way to China in 2010. That route saves 40% on time, fuel and emissions compared to a conventional route.“We decided to invest in quality.”

Arnfinn Mentyjærvi, Maintenance Manager at the mine, says Sydvaranger had three main reasons for choosing Atlas Copco equip-ment – “reliability, life-cycle cost and energy efficiency”.

“You can look at the price tag or you can look at the total cost,” says Men-

tyjærvi. “We decided to invest in quality. We have previous experience from earlier production in the mine and know that we can trust equipment from Atlas Copco, and that ac-cess to spare parts is good.”

Energy efficiency has become increasingly im-portant within the mining industry. There is also an energy shortage. “The clo-sure of the mine in 1996 created a surplus of elec-tricity in the area that was then used for other busi-ness,” says Mentyjærvi. “When the mine was reha-bilitated we had to build up a new supply chain, but the access to electricity isn’t unlimited and this has put extra focus on using energy efficient equipment.”

Hansen points out that while compressors are not the biggest consum-ers of energy at Sydva-ranger Gruve, minimizing operational costs leads to superior productivity. “Low pressure drop and dynamic control with dew point dependent switch-ing was essential,” he says. “With our frequency controlled, oil-free com-pressor ZR400VSD, which provides precise pressure control, it’s not unusual to

have energy savings of up to 35%.”

Sydvaranger Gruve has a 24-hour service contract with Atlas Copco and 20 staff are based on-site, conducting maintenance, service and repairs on the drill rig equipment. Einar Berg says the arrangement works well. “We have daily meetings where we plan and adjust the maintenance to the pro-duction,” he says. “That gives an appreciated flexi-bility and there have been very few problems.” Atlas Copco has also delivered lighting sets and several different types of drill and top hammer rigs to Sydva-ranger. b
