John Deere is enhanc-ing its 9R/9RT Scraper Special Series Tractor lineup and adding its larg-

est model to date, the 9620R. The four wheel models and three tracked models vaunt increases

in horsepower feature the fuel saving Efficiency Manager and the exclu-sive HydraCushion sus-

pension system, as well as boast industry leading hydraulic flow – all in an effort to increase produc-tivity, uptime, and lower operating costs in earth-moving applications.

“We’re committed to delivering more power and options than ever in our most versatile lineup to date. Seven John Deere R Series Scraper Special Tractors paired with the new D Series scrapers give earthmovers a sys-tem designed and built to manage any jobsite,” said David Wilson, Prod-uct Marketing Manager, Scraper Systems, John Deere Construction & For-estry. “Having the broad-est line of scraper tractors in the industry means our customers can take ad-vantage of larger scrapers which move more materi-al with faster cycle times. The more material they move each pass, the more it drives down their cost of operation.”

The 9570R (570 hp), 9570RT (570 hp), and the 9620R (620 hp) feature a Cummins QSX15 Final Tier 4 diesel engine, while the 9470R (470 hp), 9470RT (470 hp), 9520R (520 hp), and 9520RT (520 hp) are equipped with a John Deere PowerTech 13.5L PSS Final Tier 4 engine. These new models include industry leading flow (115 GPM) for increased hy-draulic response when op-erating multiple scrapers.

The updated scraper tractors continue to utilize the most impactful feature of the 9R tractors, Efficien-cy Manager. This advanced feature automatically ad-

justs and matches the per-formance of the engine and transmission to maintain ground speed with the low-est RPMs to dramatically reduce operator fuel con-sumption.

A HydraCushion sus-pension is a John Deere exclusive available on all 9R series wheeled scraper tractors and offers con-tractors the ability to virtually eliminate road lope associated with high transport speeds typically seen on haul roads. By eliminating the lope from the ride, both loaded and empty cycle times can in-crease, thus adding direct-ly to the bottom line. To further enhance ride qual-ity and stability in high-speed transport where these tractors typically operate, all 9R wheeled scraper tractors have a 17 inch increase in their wheelbase.

To accommodate high-er horsepower and larger loads, the 9R tractors’ front frame strength was in-creased by 10 percent and the rear frame assembly strength by 30 percent. To further support the loads of larger scrapers and re-duce axle loading the short drawbar support is now standard equipment on all scraper special tractors, with the long support still being available on wheel tractors.

The tractors are also equipped with John Deere’s exclusive Auto-Load system. This fea-ture makes it push-button easy to consistently load the scraper in minimal time with minimal effort. AutoLoad controls the scraper’s hydraulic-lift functions during the load cycle by automatically ad-justing the blade height until the pan is full, and then disengages through normal operation. The system allows novice and experienced operators to be more consistent and productive while operat-ing John Deere tractors and scrapers.

To improve the up-time experience, John Deere added critical fuel capacity to provide lon-ger runtime. With op-erators running double shifts or longer days in order to meet minimum production requirements, fuel tank capacity was increased to 400 gallons on all wheeled scraper special tractors, allowing the tractors to run longer without the need to stop and refuel in the middle of a shift.

Auto differential lock was added to the 9R Series and provides automatic traction throughout the entire jobsite. By engaging the auto diff lock from the command arm, the opera-tor no longer has to worry about engaging and disen-gaging the diff lock. The system keeps the differen-tial lock engaged as long as the tractor is straight. This feature not only increases performance in tough con-ditions to allow the tractor to pull through soft areas, but it also aids in reducing tire wear.

Inside the cab, Active Command Steering was added for greater high speed control and im-proved low speed maneu-verability. By controlling the steering inputs elec-tronically it reduces the fatigue on the operator and keeps the tractor headed straight down the haul road with minimal correc-tion.

Operators looking to get the most out of their scraper tractors can rely on Ultimate Uptime fea-turing John Deere Work-Sight. With Ultimate Up-time, operators receive pre-delivery and follow-up inspections; three years of JDLink telemat-ics, machine heath prog-nostics, and remote diagnostics and program-ming capability; and the ability to add additional dealer-provided uptime solutions to customize the package to individual needs. b

Terex Cranes has con-firmed that counterfeit versions of Terex crawler crane models originating from South Korea have been offered. Similar to the incident reports of 2013 from China, the Terex CC 2500-1 lattice boom crawl-er crane is the crane model of choice for the copycat manufacturers.

The units are assembled, branded and sold as used Terex cranes at prices well under market value and are either painted white us-ing the Terex brand or red using the Demag brand.

“This is a serious situ-ation, not only because this infringes on our intel-lectual property but, more

importantly, it poses a seri-ous safety risk for our cus-tomers. The use of these inferior, counterfeit cranes can result in deadly conse-quences” says Klaus Meiss-ner, Director of Product Strategy for Terex Cranes.

While made to look like Terex units, these pirated cranes are often assembled with a blend of older and newer technology and components not designed to work together. These counterfeit cranes fre-quently exhibit poor weld quality, inferior steel struc-tures and improperly fitted tracks. Additionally, many of the safety components designed into genuine Ter-ex cranes are missing.

“Unfortunately going by serial number alone will not determine with certainty you are buying a genuine Terex crane, as these plates can be fake as well,” adds Meissner. “Many of the counterfeit cranes were pur-chased either without an on-site inspection or through an inspection conducted by an unqualified person.”

Terex stresses the im-portance of conducting a thorough inspection of any used crane by a qualified individual prior to purchas-ing the machine, especially in the markets of concern. The safety of the company’s workers as well as individu-als who happen to be in the area where the crane is oper-ating depends on it.

Meissner also offers one additional bit of ad-vice to those entering the used crane market in Asian countries. “If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is,” he says. “Contact me under [email protected], and I will be happy to assist you in verifying that it is a genuine Terex crane.” b

Lubrication solutions specialist FLO Compo-nents Ltd. has announced its introduction into Canada, of the new Hose Connection Control Sys-tem (HCC) to monitor the grease lines in auto-matic greasing systems on

trucks and heavy equip-ment (construction, road building, mining, etc.).

According to Mike Deckert, VP of FLO Com-ponents Ltd.; “Historical-ly, regardless of the brand of Automatic Greasing System or operating prin-

ciple used, one potential weakness has been that a break in a grease feed line (the final length of hose that connects to a bearing) would go unde-tected if a visual inspec-tion is not conducted. The system would continue

to operate without ever greasing the point with the broken line. Ultimate-ly of course, the bearing could fail.”

The HCC is designed to check for breaks in the grease hose, and alerts the machine operator immedi-ately if there is a fault in ei-ther the main line from the pump or in the feed lines to the bearing points.

The HCC includes the main analyzer unit, con-nectors that act as elec-tric isolators between the grease lines and the grease metering valves, and con-

nection cables to the ana-lyzer. Grease hoses must be steel shielded to conduct electricity. As shown in the images of a demonstration panel provided by FLO, normal operation is indi-cated by a green light in the cab. In case of a fault, a signal is sent to the main analyzer and a red light alerts the operator there is a problem.

Deckert say the HCC can “Help prevent costly bearing damage and un-planned downtime. It can also significantly reduce the risk of accidents and

environmental pollution from leaking grease.”

Requiring either 12 or 24 VDC, the analyzer unit can monitor from 10 to 20 hoses, depending on voltage and can be easily retro-fitted into existing lubrication systems. The system has an operating pressure up to 300 bar (4,351 psi), can be used in temperatures ranging from -40 to +70 °C (-40 to 158 °F), and is not af-fected by line lengths, ambient temperature, pressure differential or pressure losses. b

Customers needing a bucket to more efficiently complete a variety of exca-vating and grading projects can now depend on new Doosan heavy-duty ditch-ing buckets. The heavy-duty ditching buckets are available on all Doosan crawler excavators, rang-ing from the DX140LC-3 through the DX530LC-5 models.

The heavy-duty ditch-ing bucket’s deep profile provides Doosan excava-tor operators with smooth operation and optimal ver-satility when loading ma-terial, grading, backfilling, cleaning ditches for im-proved drainage and work-ing on slopes.Bucket improvements

The Doosan heavy-duty ditching buckets have the same profile but are wider than the standard Doosan digging buckets. Addition-ally, the heavy-duty ditch-ing buckets do not have the internal center gussets

found on some ditching buckets. This design gives a larger capacity than the current ditching bucket and allows for more ma-terial to be moved in one cycle of the excavator work group.

Some other standard features include a lift eye for lifting applications, weld-on side cutters and reversible bolt-on cutting edge to leave a smooth work area when the job is completed. Note: the approval of the new heavy-duty ditching buckets is based on its designed use, not mate-rial capacity.Pin-on or wedge-lock options

Altogether there are 13 Doosan heavy-duty ditch-ing buckets available. These buckets are available as pin-on buckets or can be ordered to fit hydraulic or wedge-lock quick couplers, depending on customer needs or preference. b

For 31 years GO Drilling from Ottawa in Canada

has been leading the way in drilling straighter, and more productively than the competition. As the lead-ing drill & blast contractor in the area the company attributes its success to the skills of its employees, its vast array of Sandvik Construction drill rigs and tools, as well as its relation-ship with Sandvik’s distrib-utor, Selix Equipment.

Drilling straight holes in unstable rock formations is an accomplishment and GO Drilling Inc. does it all the time. This has allowed the Ottawa, Canada, drill-ing and blasting company to now enjoy a reputation as a “straight-shooter”.

“We face lots of differ-ent types of rocks in Ontar-io: soft rocks easy to drill, soft abrasive rocks, and hard granite with lots of seams,” says Mat Oswald, the company’s Operations Manager. “The seamy rock is especially challenging. It is our biggest challenge in keeping straight holes and accuracy.”

Seams are tricky be-cause when a drill bit strikes a fault, the unequal pressure encourages de-viation from a true course. Cohesion of the drilled ma-terial also becomes prob-lematic and the binding force along cleavage planes is reduced. Result? The ver-tical hole starts wandering.

In short, it’s a tough job descending from here to there in a straight line; yet

GO Drilling routinely suc-ceeds at it. “We are known for drilling straight holes,” Mat says, matter-of-factly. “We have taken work from our competitors for being able to produce straight holes through fractured rock.”

Mat credits his drills and his skilled crewmembers for the company’s perfor-mance, with GO Drilling being the first in Canada to turn to Sandvik hydraulic drills. Today, they own 17 Sandvik rigs. They range from one 11,000-pound Commando hydraulic unit, to five Pantera 1500 top hammer drills, each weighing 48,000 pounds. Other Sandvik models in the equipment yard in-clude one Pantera 1100, a DP1500 and a DX800.

The DX’s articulated boom rides on a work plat-form that can be rotated up to 180 degrees to keep work in front of the opera-tor. The superstructure is powered by a CAT diesel engine and counterweight-ed for optimum stability on uneven terrain. It can drill holes 3.5-5 inches in diameter. The DP series, just like the current DPi se-ries, can punch holes 3½-6 inches in diameter and are equipped with powerful CAT engines. The DP series are of robust construction supported by oversized components and strong feed.

“Sandvik drills always have been good for us,” says Mat. “They are very

powerful drills, very reli-able, and it is easy to keep parts for them because they

are all the same. Person-ally, I don’t think there are any other drills like them. We have demoed other

brands, but they don’t seem to hold up to Sand-vik’s production.” And, of course, the machines drill straight. “They do very well in drilling through the seams to give us straight holes.”

Some of the drills’ ac-curacy is attributed to the Sandvik Rock Pilot system

incorporated in each rig. The sophisticated moni-toring system typically keeps course deflection to

under 2%. The practical consequences for opera-tors are fewer drilled holes for placement of charges, quicker completion of a drilling operation, and less stress and fatigue on the drill string.

Sandvik rock tools also help keep drills on track. The tools used by GO Drilling include the Sand-vik GT60 drilling system, which the company em-ploys for blast holes. The GT60 features larger-di-mension rods that can ream out holes 3 and 5/8 inches to 6 inches in diameter; an unusually broad range. The Sandvik rods are fab-

ricated in the only rolling mill in the world that ex-clusively rolls drill steel. Leading the way down a hole is a Sandvik pilot tube that sets a sure course. “The GT60 has great qual-ity,” Mat says, adding that tools from other makers tend to break. “We have found that Sandvik tools last quite a bit longer than other brands.”

The other key contribu-tors to all those straight holes are GO Drilling em-ployees who operate the machines and maintain them. The company has

“We have taken work from our competitors for being able to produce straight holes through fractured rock.”

The company has 15-25 employees, with the number depending on the season, including drillers, blasters, excavator operators and shop technicians.

15-25 employees, with the number depending on the season, including drillers, blasters, excavator opera-tors and shop technicians. A company garage handles most drill servicing and re-pair.

Mat Oswald takes pride in the fact that some em-ployees have been on the payroll for two decades, a statement about company loyalty and expertise. “We have some of the best drill-ers there are. Certainly all of our customers think so! We train until we produce the best. We spend a lot of time and money training our drillers, making sure they are up to our stan-dards.”

GO Drilling sinks bits into rocky terrain all over Ontario, a province that is home to thousands of kinds of minerals. The company specializes in drill-and-blast operations in quar-

ries and for construction projects. Construction work includes right-of-way clearance and anchoring foundations, with drilled holes range from 1 inch to 6 inches. GO Drilling just completed working on a 300-home development by Ottawa-based Taggart Con-struction Ltd., with drillers creating trenches for place-ment of sewer lines and water and storm drains.

Solar panel projects have kept GO Drilling op-erators especially busy in recent years. The Ontario Power Authority is push-ing to diversify its power sources and make the province a leader in the re-newable energy industry. A recent Authority project was a 10-megawatt solar installation about 30 miles from Ottawa that featured 44,000 solar panels on 80 acres. GO Drilling drills rock for foundations for solar panels and blasts

trenches for power cables running from panel fields.

The company relies on an Ottawa sales and ser-vice firm, Selix Equipment, to supply drill parts that eventually wear out bat-tering themselves against granite and other rock. Selix is the Ontario-wide distributor of Sandvik drills and components. Prior to establishing a business re-lationship with Selix, GO Drilling dealt directly with Sandvik offices in Lively and Montreal. “It has been very good for us that Selix is so close,” says Mat Os-wald.

Selix representative Mario Roussel agrees: “Proximity is important to a busy company like GO Drilling. Our goal is to keep the drills turning,” Roussel continues. “To that end, we have factory-trained mechanics, fully equipped service vehicles and a large inventory of Sandvik parts. We coor-dinate with Sandvik to make sure our priority is prompt service.”

Mat’s father, Gary, founded GO Drilling 31 years ago after he decided to work for himself. He had been drilling and blasting for other companies on pipelines. He first bought a Gardner Denver drill, but soon switched to Sand-vik. His fleet of machines quickly grew along with his work load, first on con-struction sites and then in quarries.

Today, Mat heads the family company that he joined 14 years ago. His younger brother, Nicholas, operates drills, is learn-ing the delicate work of blasting, and manages the company’s work with solar projects. “It is a lot easier to work in a family business,” Mat says. “The working re-lationship is a lot closer.” Mat adds that, besides fam-ily, the unpredictability of his work energizes him. “What I like about my job is that every day is differ-ent. There never is one day the same as another. Every day the job and the drill surprise me. I always have something new.”

With his father as a con-sultant on decisions, Mat moves smoothly between estimating jobs, blasting rock, and repairing drills. It is an eclectic routine wor-thy of a company that is wide open to job opportu-nities. Says Mat: “We drill everything and anything that there is. b

NEOS GeoSolutions, Inc. announced that it will be presenting the results of a recent neoSCAN study cov-ering the uranium deposits of the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan, Canada at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) annual conference next week in Toronto. The PDAC exists to promote a responsible, vibrant and sustainable Ca-nadian mineral exploration and development sector and is perhaps best known for its annual convention, which last year attracted 25,122 attendees from 103 countries.

NEOS was invited to present at PDAC 2015 by Geosoft Inc., a lead-ing provider of integrated geoscience software for mapping and modeling the Earth’s subsurface. In the PDAC presentation, NEOS plans to share tech-niques it has been using in oil & gas exploration — focusing especially on basement mapping and

predictive analytics meth-ods — with geoscientists involved in minerals ex-ploration and develop-ment.

To demonstrate the application of these tech-niques in the mining sec-tor, NEOS undertook a neoSCAN study of a por-tion of the Athabasca Ba-sin, a 100,000 km2 area that serves as the world’s leading source of high-grade uranium. As part of this project, NEOS inte-grated and simultaneously interpreted several existing geological and geophysi-cal datasets to map key regional geologic features in a 17,000 km2 area of investigation. The legacy geo-datasets that NEOS analyzed included gravity, magnetic, electromagnetic and radiometric as well as sub-sets of available geo-logic information. Interme-diate interpretive products, including fault density and basement burial-depth maps, were also generated and analyzed using predic-

tive analytics.Dr. Craig Beasley, Chief

Science Officer for NEOS, commented, “In less than 30 days, we were able to identify some of the key geological and geophysical attributes that correspond to the locations of the known uranium deposits within Athabasca. I think this demonstrates that an analysis of existing pub-lic domain, multi-phys-ics data using advanced quantitative interpretation techniques – including predictive analytics – can often be a useful method for de-risking exploration acreage and improving discovery success, wheth-er we are talking about the search for minerals or for oil & gas.”

NEOS’s domain expert on predictive analytics, Em-manuel (‘Manu’) Schnet-zler, presented the results of this Athabasca neoSCAN study, entitled, ‘Predictive Analytics of Multi-Disci-plinary Data for Basin and Basement Studies,’ dur-ing the PDAC conference, which was held on Mon-day March 2nd (Adopting Tools & Techniques from the Oil Patch session) at the Metro Toronto Conven-tion Centre. b

Aggreko, the world-leading provider of tempo-rary power and tempera-ture control solutions, has been named the Official Temporary Energy Services Supplier for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan American Games being held in Toronto, Canada. The Pan American/Para-pan events will be held July 10-26th and August 7-14th, respectively.

The two sporting events expect more than 10,000 athletes and officials from 41 countries who will par-ticipate in the largest inter-national multi-sport event Canada has ever hosted. The Toronto 2015 Games is slated to host more ath-letes and sports than the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, in which Aggreko provided power generation to both of those monumen-tal sporting events.

Aggreko will play a key role in designing and providing both temporary

power and temperature control solutions to the Games and the Cisco Inter-national Broadcast Centre.

“We’re glad to have Ag-greko as our Official Tem-porary Energy Services Supplier,” said Saad Rafi, CEO, Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan American Games Organizing Com-mittee. “We want to pro-vide athletes, coaches and spectators with an experi-ence they’ll always remem-ber and Aggreko provides a service we know we can count on.”

Aggreko will supply more than 100 generators totalling over 50MW of temporary power that will provide primary and back-up power systems across the Games; and design and install power redundancy to support the live global broadcast as well as the Games’ timing and scor-ing systems. In addition, Aggreko will keep the ath-letes cool by providing its temperature control sys-

tems for the CIBC Athletes Village dining facility and more than 30 surrounding technical venues.

“We are honoured to extend our expertise and partner with the TORON-TO 2015 Pan Am Games,” said Bruce Pool, managing director of Aggreko North America. “We are the lead-ers in our industry and we have a history of deliver-ing power and temperature solutions that are custom-ized to meet the strategic requirements of large-scale events.”

“Aggreko has been pro-viding temporary utility services for several years to businesses and organiza-tions throughout Toronto, so we’re very pleased to be part of this event that’s so important to the province and to Canada,” Pool fur-ther commented. “We’re passionate about contribut-ing to sports and to com-munities, so we’re very proud to be a part of the Games.”

This is Aggreko’s third time supporting both the Pan American/Parapan American Games with its power systems and temperature control solu-tions. b

At first glance the Pit Stop Line from Trelleborg Wheel Systems is just a thin orange band hiding inside a solid rubber tire. But for the forklift in-dustry, the Pit Stop Line represents a new era in tire management – maxi-mizing tire life, raising productivity, improving safety and reducing envi-ronmental impact.

The Pit Stop Line from

Trelleborg is developed to end the uncertainty about when to replace a solid tire, and it does this in the simplest way possible: visually. The orange line appears on a tire when it wears down; telling the operator there is an estimated tire life of 80 to 100 hours remain-ing. This gives ample time for tire replacement to be scheduled when it is most

convenient for the user. To replace a solid tire on a forklift in a busy factory or warehouse means tak-ing a valuable machine out of service for a period of time. If tire replacement can be incorporated with planned maintenance rou-tines, it delivers users two huge benefits. Firstly, it minimizes the length of time forklifts are out of service, and it avoids tak-ing machines out of ser-vice prematurely for tire replacement. Both scenar-ios cost time and money. With millions of forklift trucks in service globally, this new tire feature has the potential to offer con-siderable savings and ef-ficiencies for owners and operators of forklift fleets.

The Trelleborg design team analyzed thousands of used solid tires and dis-covered that they had on average been replaced with around 25 percent of resid-ual use still in them.

Gianluca Abbati, Re-search and Development Director at Trelleborg

Wheel Systems, says, “Many people judge when to replace their solid tires based on their experience of and the rules applied to car tires. Lots of users think rules are the same and that tread-pattern wear for re-placement of solid tires is the same as on pneumatic tires. In fact the two prod-ucts are very different and cannot be compared.”

When the tread pat-tern on a solid tire disap-pears it may be only 50 percent worn and can continue to perform well beyond the point where a treaded road tire would need to be changed. The Pit Stop Line completely removes that misconcep-tion and ensures that tires are used for their whole life, giving cus-tomers maximum value and machine uptime.

The design team took 18 months to develop the Pit Stop Line feature from concept to production, uti-lizing rigorous testing. At a manufacturing level, the challenge was to create the orange pigment band of the correct thickness in a specific position within the tire – a challenge made more difficult by the size variations of the Trelleborg range of tires.

“As well as being con-sistent in position we had to be certain that the band would not adversely affect tire performance,” explains Abbati, outlining the un-derlying challenge of ensur-ing performance. “As a key supplier to leading global OEM forklift producers we have to be 100 percent cer-tain that our products will continue to deliver indus-try-leading performance to their customers.”

For users there are many obvious benefits. Abbati explains that being able to use a tire for its whole life has a direct effect on costs, in reduced downtime and longer maintenance inter-vals as well as savings on tire replacement and ser-vice costs; Pit Stop Line can reduce running costs in ex-cess of 20 percent.

There are other ben-efits to be gained, including safety. The incorporation of the orange line helps to sim-plify tire inspection routines by giving a clear indication of tire condition. It supports the ETRTO (The European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) Manual rec-ommendation on tire safety and will make it possible, for the first time, to have 100 percent accurate tire safety checks. The Pit Stop Line

helps prevent tires being re-placed too late as well as too early. This is particularly rel-evant for the 3 to 5 percent of people who use tires well beyond the safe wear limit. Such users “risk accidents and damage to the forklift,” Abbati says, as the truck clearance with the ground becomes too small.

Another clear advance is the reduced impact on the environment by maximiz-ing the life of the tires. This means fewer raw materials are used and less waste is created. It also means re-ducing the impact of trans-portation, packaging and more. Trelleborg estimates that globally as many as 400,000 fewer tires could be required, adding up to an industry wide reduction of 1,900,000 kilograms of CO2 annually from trans-portation.

This deceptively simple concept contributes to safety, it is cost-effective, and it ends the uncertainty about when a tire really has reached the end of the road. Deceptively simple maybe, but as another Ital-ian innovator, Leonardo da Vinci, once said, “La sem-plicità è la più grande so-fisticatezza” – simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

With the emergence of solar energy farms

as a multi-billion dollar industry, Knapp saw the light soon after the govern-ment of Ontario introduced programs to encourage so-lar development in 2009. He quickly went to work building a new equipment fleet to provide specialized construction services to so-lar operators.

Site prep for solar farming

Based in Brockville, Ontario, L.A. Knapp Construction has now won numerous contracts in eastern Ontario to convert marginal agricul-tural land into produc-tive solar farms. In just a few years, Ontario has become a world leader in solar energy production. Investors are attracted to Knapp’s area, where bedrock lying just below the thin soil provides a sound footing for the col-lector panels.

Under current energy contracts, investors have 20 years to recover their investment. “My custom-ers are in a high risk, high reward business,” says Knapp. “They have

to move quickly to secure their contracts and come on-stream while conditions are favourable.”

“Making hay”To get on board,

Knapp had to move quickly, too. Instead of going through his typi-cal negotiation process with dealers, he took the unusual step of putting his equipment needs out to tender. In short order, Knapp was signing pur-chase orders with Top Lift Enterprises of Stoney Creek, Ontario.

Top Lift’s Chris Ander-ssen recalls, “It was an interesting approach. Law-rence put together a com-plete set of bid documents, just like a municipal buyer would. So we reviewed his requirements and bid our best price.”

“It was just luck that I found Top Lift,” Knapp admits. “I saw their name on the side of some Link-Belt equipment on a job-site, so I sent them my bid package. Now I’m in my third season working with them.”

Right tools, bright peopleKnapp’s initial orders to

Top Lift included five mod-els of Link-Belt excavators ranging in size from 18,500 lbs. to 66,000 lbs.

Established in the paving business for over 25 years, Knapp’s new Link-Belt fleet is the base for a new busi-ness division he created to pursue civil projects in the solar industry. His crews, numbering up to 100 employees, are equipped to take on every step of solar site development. Once the woodcutters have re-moved the marketable trees, Knapp moves in to clear the stumps, then level the profile to suit the rows of solar arrays. The team then builds access roads for instal-lation crews, and com-pletes the trenching to bury the electrical cable.

For one recent project, more than 5,000 posts were driven into the rock across 120 acres. This site will generate 10 mega-watts of electricity for On-tario’s power grid, enough to power more than 2,000 homes. Connecting the ar-rays to the grid can require 3 km to 5 km of buried cable.

Continuing opportunitiesSince the division’s

start-up, Knapp has com-pleted eight utility-scale solar projects. More than 70 large solar farms are already up and running in Ontario, making the province a world leader in solar development. New projects are under way to farm the sun-light on as much as 750 acres. By the end of the construction season next year, Ontario will have installed 2 gigawatts (2,000 MW) of solar-gen-erated electricity.

According to Knapp, Top Lift has been a valu-able asset to his new busi-ness and to his customers. “I just needed the right mix of tools to make the proj-ects profitable for the own-ers,” he explains. “Top Lift has done a good job advis-ing us on the mix of equip-

ment and then supporting it.”

Once the equipment was delivered, Top Lift’s Service Manager, Steve Cargill, and technician Shawn Ellis got to work with Knapp’s crews at the jobsite. Top Lift has com-pleted the configuration of the machines to suit Knapp’s particular require-ments, and also provided onsite training for opera-tors and technicians.

Maximizing uptime“Time is money at every

step with these projects.” says Knapp. “We had to have our guys right up to speed on the new Tier 4 technology. We can’t af-ford any downtime or de-lays with these machines.” Along with maintenance training for Knapp techni-cians, Top Lift instructed operators on new shut-down procedures to ensure easy start-ups each morn-ing.

“The service team at Top Lift, they’re pretty bright young fellows. One of their technicians from the Montreal of-fice even made up some special decals for the cabs, as guides for the operators. Since those have been installed, we haven’t had to have a Top Lift technician come out to our jobsites yet.”

Anderssen sums up Top Lift’s service policy this way: “When he calls

us, we come. We fix what needs to be fixed. We mod-ify what needs to be modi-fied and he knows that we can take care of him.”

Year-round serviceThe current boom in

solar isn’t expected to last for long, but Knapp is prepared for that, too. He has continued to build his fleet with Top Lift, so he now pro-vides year-round main-tenance services to the sites he built. He again turned to Top Lift to sup-ply Takeuchi excavators with attachments cus-tom-modified for the job. “We were brought in to do maintenance on the site and, the next day, that solar farm produced more in one day than it had in the previous two months!”

As a long-time equip-ment sales specialist, Chris Anderssen recognizes the unique opportunity that Lawrence Knapp has pio-neered. “We’re still work-ing on new ideas for his fleet. This relationship has really grown, from a basic tender document to the per-sonal connections we’ve made with him throughout the company. From our Managing Director, David Shea, to our people in the field, we use those connec-tions to better understand the needs of our customers at every level. That’s how new opportunities turn into wins for everyone.” b
