2015 marks the 9thyear of successfullydelivering a programmeof work for young carershere at the theatre.Did you know there are more than 20,000 young carersliving in the West Midlands with some as young as fiveyears old? Birmingham Hippodrome’s Young Carersprogramme provides the young people with thechance to be care-free, meeting other young carerswith similar daily challenges.

We welcomed over 60 young carers to a series ofcreative workshops this Easter, where they createdtheir anthem ‘The Power’. Our Summer workshops sawthe children working with professional dramapractitioners, musicians and singers for a fun-filledweek based on a specifically written story about an oldtoyshop and the mysterious goings on inside.

The practitioners are great - they taught usskills that we can use not just when performingbut in everyday life.

Qasim, Young Carer”

We were so moved by yesterday'sperformance. I felt honoured to be a part ofthat. They are all so amazing. It left me feelingso weepy. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Thankyou for all you have done.

Young Carers Supporter”

Young Carers are young people fromall different backgrounds who lookafter someone in their family suchas an ill parent or young siblings.Spurgeon’s is a children’s charitythat supports and speaks out for theUK’s most vulnerable and neglectedchildren and young people. The workwe do with Spurgeon’s helps thechildren to have a much-neededbreak and be themselves.

Last year we asked the Young Carersto think about the work they do tohelp them recognize what amazingyoung people they are. Followingthis, they wrote and composed asong called The Power focusing ontheir power and strength - acelebration of what they are capableof. It is such a touching song and Ihope one day it will be adopted asthe national song for all YoungCarers in the UK.

Liz Leck, Birmingham Hippodrome’sCreative Learning Manager, said:”

Receiving its premiere on 2 July at The Electric Cinema, ‘Nobody Nose’is the second film to be produced by the group. Inspired by Russiannovelist Gogol, ‘The Nose’ charts the story of man waking up one day -without a nose! What then follows is a surreal journey to reunite theowner with his nose.

In our version the nose grows to quite a size….

One of a Kind have been involved in all aspects of creation - firstlygetting creative making noses of all shapes and sizes - including ourgiant nose - with artist Benny Semp. They then set aboutstoryboarding and creating the film with Reel Access, which wasfilmed on location in Birmingham.

Schools workshops also took place at Queensbury School, HallmoorSchool and The Pines in Birmingham. Creative practitioners used thestory of the nose to inspire paintings, stories and the making of morenoses by young people - all of which were used in the eventual film.

Over 80 people watched the premiere in the comfort of the UK’soldest independent cinema with support from our good friends at The Electric.

12 members of One of aKind, our residenttheatre group for youngpeople with learningdisabilities, have createda cinematic masterpiece‘The Nose’ here atBirminghamHippodrome thissummer.
