Surah Al Qamar (Ayah 49 - 52) 27th January, 2013

I n t r o d u c t i o n

At the end of surah Qamar we will see how truthfulness is important therefore we need to ask Allah for truthfulness while acquiring knowledge and learning Quran. The nations who belied the messengers were not truthful because if they were truthful then Allah would have guided them. All of the previous nations who were sent Messengers were not truthful in accepting the truth, which is why, despite that the messengers and miracles were in front of them, they were not guided to the right path (although the path was in front of them)

When you ask Allah for anything he will test if you are truthful or not e.g. Allah will test if you are truthful in seeking the knowledge. Surah Qamar talks about different nations to whom Messengers were sent. There cannot be any greater guidance for any nation than having Messengers sent to them but these nations were not truthful, did not want guidance because they did not want to change and so they belied the Messengers and Prophets. Always remember Allah will never forsake you if you are truthful.

This Ayah tells us that everything is sealed and written. Nothing around us is random or is a coincidence.

Every situation, whether through people, incident or object is through Allah’s will-Qadr ( بقدرر.) The بب

here indicates attachment. This means everything is attached to Qadr ( قدرر ) nothing is random. How

everything around is Qadr ( قدرر) even the blink of your eye. The قدرر makes us submit to Allah. It is said

that acceptance of رر قد is better than patience. It gives us satisfaction and contentment. We do not blame

or accuse anyone because we know everything is قدرر.

This Ayat has so much depth. If we worry and stress about things around us then it will divert us from what Allah created us for. Allah created us to be an obedient slave of Allah. In order for us to focus on what we have been created for, Allah took care of everything with Qadr. Allah’s decree is the best and it is what suits us exactly. We must remember that we will only be accountable for “our” actions. This includes actions of the heart, actions of the limbs and our utterances.

Previously in Ayah 49, Allah tells us that everything in this Duniya is pre-decreed. Allah knows about everything even before it exists. Ayat 50 tells us about Allah’s ability and power.

.usedإإال is for emphasis; negation is used once in the beginning then again when وومآ

means “ our commands” this refers to all that Allah commands. Here Allah is Al Malik -The King and أأمرنآhe is Al Qadir. Here can see the connection between QudruAllah and Allah’s power and ability. When we think how Allah pre-ordained and pre-decreed everything at the same time we should also know that whatever Allah commands, it will happen. Allah is able to do everything. When things do not go according to our plan we must not think that Allah is not able to do it.

means “but” which is for emphasis / Affirmation إإال

.means “one”. This means it just takes one command from Allah for anything to happen ووٲحدةة

This Ayat makes us always ask Allah for everything. Sometimes it happens that even by asking Allah we do not get what we want. We must always remember that when Allah decrees anything and puts us in any

situation we should not think it is bad for us. In order for us to grow we need patience and اررض (acceptance, satisfaction, contentment). We need to associate good with Allah. This is a matter of faith. When we plan things and things don’t go according to our plan and we don’t know about Allah then we will be depressed. We do not need to worry about planning our life but about planning our Hereafter. In fact, when we plan our life according to Hereafter, then this is the best plan. If our concern is Allah and Hereafter then Allah will plan our life to achieve the bigger goal. When we have this approach then Allah will make everything around us happen so as to help us in Hereafter. Dua is an act of worship therefore we should not be concerned with results of our Dua. We should not make Dua for results but we should make Dua considering it as an ibadah.

The biggest problem is when people under estimate Allah. When we look around us, we find bad things happening for righteous people and good things happening for the wrong doers. We think why does Allah not punish the wrong doers ? This is not the right approach. We should not think like this. Allah is able to punish each and everyone who is doing wrong but everything comes with Qadr and everything is pre-decreed though Allah is able to do everything in blink of an eye. In short there is wisdom behind everything that happens. This makes us attach to Allah for everything as everything is decreed and Allah will decree when it suits us.

Consider about provision. Sometimes we get provision through some means after effort but some times we get provision without any effort like the Manu Salwa that came for Banu Israel, while sometimes we need to work for provision. This is all decreed. Even about Shifa and cure it is pre-decreed.

In the previous Ayat Allah tells us how He is able to command anything in the blink of an eye. How Allah is able to bring our provision to us in the blink of the eye. In the same way destruction and torment can happen in the blink of an eye. Sometimes Allah’s punishment is gradual but other times the punishment happens in blink of an eye.

Here Allah is talking about his punishment and torment. There are 3 affirmations in this Ayat. In this Ayat Allah is talking about himself in plural to indicate his Majesty.

As provision is in Allah’s hand similarly destruction too can happen in the blink of an eye. People who transgress against themselves by doing mistakes and sins need to feel scared because punishment from Allah can happen in the blink of an eye. This keeps us on our toes and keep us firm us on the straight path. All the Ayat in the Quran take us to Siratul mustaqeem. This is why every Surah in the Quran is beautiful and unique by itself.

Every Ayat in the Quran should make us love Allah, fear Allah and have hope in Allah. This triangle is very important. Love is the core, as we cannot do anything until we love Allah. Allah wants us to know him through love and not through his punishment. Although Surah Qamar talks about Allah’s warnings the warnings are out of love. Allah did not leave us just like this. With love our hearts will be drawn to Allah. And when our hearts are drawn we will take glad tiding and the warnings happily. The love of Allah should not be separated from us. Though this Ayat is about torment it is covered with love. Imagine if we don’t have the warnings from Allah then we could fall into a trap. The warning is a caution to not take the path of the wrong doers. It is a wake up call for us and it tells us to take the destruction of the previous nations as a lesson.

means 3 affirmations وولقد

هھھھلكنآأأ means “to destroy/ punish”. This is for everyone but specifically for Quraish. Why were the Quraish proud of themselves when Allah destroyed previous nations that were more powerful than the Quraish? Allah is telling the Quraish to not be arrogant because Allah destroyed previous nations that were more powerful and more intelligent than the Quraish.

means “resemblance” this refers to people who are of the same family and support each other. Also أأشيیاعكم it means people who have the same thinking and support for each other. Allah is telling the Quraish that he destroyed people who resembled the them. All kafireen resemble each other and are in fact the same. This means all the disbelievers, even though they may look different, their actions / attitude is the same. Allah is telling the Quraish that they resemble the disbelievers before them. The disbelievers of the previous nations in history were exactly like the Quraish because the actions are the same. Though disbelief is of different types they have one thing in common, which is disbelief in Allah e.g. some people disbelieve by worshiping cows, others by worshipping money and some by worshipping other people. All of the disbelievers have different actions but their concept is the same. All of them underestimate Allah. If the people have the same actions they are similar in attitude, in how they talk and how they behave. This is why we are not supposed to follow the way / attitude of anyone except that of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him). This is Sibghat Allah (Color of Allah). If all the Muslims are on the straight path then they too have the same attitude and thinking. Sibghat Allah (Color of Allah) is the best identity. Color of Allah is Qaal Allah and QaalArRasul. The thing that is common amongst the believers is their attitude, which is the same. This is why believers will stick to believers, Hypocrites will stick to Hypocrites and disbelievers will stick to disbelievers. .

If we look at the history all of the nations that belied the messengers and were destroyed e.g.Qaum Nooh and Qoum Aaad. Their arrogance was the prime reason behind their disbelief, which is why those nations were destroyed and punished in Duniya and will face more punishment in hereafter.

Here Allah is talking to the Quraish and asking them to look at the outcome of previous nations that disbelieved similarly to them .Why are the Quraish not afraid that their outcome will be the same as those previous nations? Do the Quraish have any guarantee that nothing will happen to them? Allah is asking the disbelievers if there is anyone who will take heed of warnings sent to them? .

Everyone is equal before Allah and no one is related to Allah. Even if they are from a particular tribe like the Quraish they cannot be treated differently. There is no relation between Allah and his slave except taqwa. The most honorable thing with Allah is taqwa. Between Allah and his slave one can achieve honor by taqwa and by guarding yourself.

Another thing that we need to know is that the way of Allah will never change. How Allah deals with his servants is the same for all. It is equal for all. However if person transgresses then he is doing a bad thing to himself. If he is good then Allah will elevate him and honor him. We need to be a slave of Allah and reach out to him so that Allah can honor us. If we choose to be a slave of someone else then we will fall in a trap. We can be a slave of Allah by putting our hearts in the cage of love, fear and hope.

Now the question arises Who can give us the taqwa ? We need to go back to Allah and ask him to give us Taqwa. To get this taqwa we have to follow what is said in Surah Al-Fatiha Ayat 4 “It is You we worship and You we ask for help”. The solution is to go to Allah.

May Allah help us to gather our heart and bring it on the right track.

A y a h 5 2

Allah destroyed the previous nations due to their disobedience. Allah wanted them to obey him but instead of doing that they are busy in other things ( e.g. the Kuffar Quraish were busy in plotting against the Prophet Mohammed ( Peace Be Upon Him). The prime reasons for the destruction of the previous nations were their sins and because they were not doing what they were supposed to do.

The life in the Duniya is like a purification and reforming stage. Everything happens to us to make us better and to reform us. This life is an examination where we have to study and take an exam at the same time.

It is important to know that Allah destroyed the previous nations not because he is unjust but because those people deserved it. Allah destroyed them because of the mistakes they committed and because of things they were supposed to do but they did not do.

.means “ Everything “ this means good and bad كل شىء

Everything is written. This means everything a person did whether good or bad, it is written in their books.

means “ what they did”. Everything is Qadr. Everything in this life is pre-ordained. Allah knows about فعلوهه everything but Allah will not account us for any action till we do it. All the means come to us in order for that thing to happen. Allah knows everything but he has given us the will. Qadr is Allah’s secrets. Even a single leaf when it falls, Allah knows in the books that it will fall, he will bring the means to make the leaf fall.

We need to focus on actions that arise from our will. We will be accountable for our will and our actions. The rest of the things that happen to us we will not be accountable for.

This can be explained by the concept of input and output. Input is anything done “on you” or “to you”, this is something for which we will not be accountable. Output means anything “from you” for which we will be accountable.

In the Duniya there are things decreed that are “to you” like where we are born, who are our parents, what we look like. All of this is decreed and we will not be accountable for this.

Similarly for anything done “on you” we will not be accountable for. If anyone does anything or says anything to you again we will not be accountable for this.

Something you do i.e. “ from you” means anything that we do and for this we will be accountable. We will be accountable for our actions and reactions i.e. what we do and what we say.
