    June 28, 2003Dear Commissioners:Months ago, we were told that each topic in the Commission's mandate will haveone public hearing and Al Qaeda is scheduled for July 9th. After learningdetailsof the agenda for that hearing, we have concerns that, in its current format,salient questions will not be asked publicly.To combat the lack of favorable press thus far, the Commission can use theupcoming public hearing to polish its image. Rather than expending its limited'time and resources on a strictly informational forum about Al Qaeda and state-sponsored terrorism, the Commission should schedule public testimony from fieldagents and others with first hand knowledge of Al Qaeda, who can speak to ourgovernment's involvement and policies. Asking crucial questions of thosewitnesses about interrelationships between the oil industry, our government,Saudi Arabia, the CIA and Al Qaeda will attest to the 9/11 Commission's resolveto fulfill its mandate for a rigorous investigation.We are frustrated that the administration and various government agencies arestalling and are giving only token cooperation while their possible malfeasanceand culpability remain undisclosed and, seemingly, unchallenged. Bureaucratsare still protecting their turf and no one seems to be challenging thatbehavior. Isn't this the same environment that led to September llth? Have anylessons been learned?We consider the work of the Commission to be an investigation into the murderof 3,000 people. The Commission must ferret out all contributing factors,regardless of whether they involve mistakes, incompetence or something moresinister. Then, and only then, will the full accountability we seek beachieved. Only then will the Commission be able to make cogent recommendationsfor protecting our nation from future terrorist attacks.

    Dear Commissioners:

    Months ago, we were told that each topic in the Commission's mandate w ill haveone public hearing and Al Qaeda is scheduled for July 9th. After learning detailsof the agenda for that hearing, we have concerns that, in its current format, salient questions will not beasked publicly.

    To combat the lack of favorable press thus far, the Commission can use the upcoming public hearingto polish its image. Rather than expend ing its limited time and resources o n a strictly inform ationalforum about Al Qaeda and state-sponsored terrorism, the Com mission should schedule publictestimony from field agents and others with first hand knowledge of Al Qaeda, who can speak to ourgovernment's involvement and policies. Asking crucial questions of those witnesses aboutinterrelationships between the oil industry, our government, Saudi Arabia, the CIA and Al Qaeda willattest to the 9/11Commission's resolve to fulfill its mandate for a rigorous investigation.W e are frustrated that the administration and various governm ent agencies are stalling and are givingonly token cooperation wh ile their possible malfeasance and culpability remain und isclosed and,seemingly, unchallenged. Bureaucrats are still protecting their turf and no one seems to be challengingthat behavior. Isn't this the same environment that led to September 11 ? Have any lessons beenlearned?W e consider the wo rk of the C ommission to be an investigation into the murder of 3,000 people. TheCommission m ust ferret out all contributing factors, regardless of whe ther they involve mistakes,incompetence or something m ore sinister. Th en, and only then , will the full accountability we seek beachieved. Only then will the Commission be able to make cogent recommendations for protecting ournation from future terrorist attacks.
