EditorA Note from the Alberton: What a history: 1988

Armed robbers target SPCAMonday 14 July was a very sad day for the Alberton SPCA when their staff were held up at gunpoint. Fortunately no one was harmed, but the staff were left in a state of shock after the robbery. The robbers ordered the staff to empty their wallets and hand over their wedding rings, engagement rings, cash, jewellery and cellphones. The Alberton SPCA suffered a huge financial loss, as both cash and goods from their second-hand shop were stolen. Stephanie Henning and Christine Bester, two of the SPCA staff, were on duty when two robbers, one armed, entered the office area. “You don’t think at that moment,” said

Stephanie. “You just want them to take what they want and leave.”Two more robbers, both armed, then entered the second-hand shop and demanded cash and jewellery. Shanahan Haupt, another SPCA staff member, was behind the counter. “We always think something like this will never happen to us, but now we are back and need to raise money for the animals again, because that is why we are here,” she said. It is alleged that the four robbers had another accomplice who was posing as a car guard. The SPCA was closed on 14 and 15 July and re-opened on 16 July.

Robbers raid MTN shopOn Monday 14 July, a robbery took place at the MTN store at Alberton City Shopping Centre at 17:55.Five men entered the premises posing as customers and ordered the staff to hand over all their stock. Staff and customers co-operated with their demands and nobody was injured. The Alberton SAPS are investigating the matter and the Centre Manager, Petra Foord, would like to reassure customers and tenants

that safety and security are a top priority at the centre. One of tame TIMES’s employees, Emily Khosa, was in the store when the robbery took place, “You go to the shops and don’t expect something like this to happen,” she said. “And it was all over within a few minutes. At first I thought it was all a joke, but it hit me afterwards and I realised how lucky we were that no one got hurt.”

Copper thief electrocuted

On Sunday 13 July, SOG received a call around 15:45 reporting a commotion in Newquay Street. Residents thought a man was being beaten up by a group of three to four men. When SOG sent a response vehicle to the scene, however, they found a severely burnt man who had allegedly been trying to steal copper cables. His accomplices fled the scene before the response team arrived. SOG, Alberton CPF, Netcare 911 and volunteer medics assisted on the scene and Netcare 911 transported the victim to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. The public’s response to the news on Facebook was very critical. What do you think? Is it fair that paramedics helped the copper thief? Should the saving of human life not always be the first priority? E-mail your response to [email protected]

Christmas in July for 67 minutesSouth Africans, together with the rest of the world, celebrated the memory of world icon Nelson Mandela on 18 July, known as Mandela Day. Companies took 67 minutes out of their day to contribute to their communities or to those in need. The Brackendowns SAPS, in partnership with Mrs United Nations SA finalist Desiree Oliphant, Engen Brackenview, FOX Security and Brackendowns CPF paid a visit to Optim-Ed Learning Centre in Brackendowns for a Christmas in July party. The learning centre is a nursery school and a centre for children with special needs. The children entertained their guests by singing the national anthem at the top of their voices. They were also pleasantly surprised to find Santa Claus hiding in their classroom and were very excited to receive the party packs he gave them. “A selfless act for 67 minutes is the plea for all South Africans and the world at large - to celebrate and commemorate the life and times of our former President and World Icon, Nelson Rolihlala Mandela,” remarked Desiree Oliphant, finalist for the internationally acclaimed pageant, Mrs United Nations SA. She committed 67 hours to her community,

instead of minutes, as an educational drive in support of her campaign. A business to business “journey,” which included schools, malls, real estate agencies and retailers, saw Desiree illustrating the “power of partnerships” in the Alberton Community.Given Desiree’s vision and mission, empowering and raising boys to men in the 21st century, she successfully negotiated and partnered with AKESO Mental and Wellness Institution based in Parktown, to serve this cause.

A special thanks to Toys for Africa which also committed toy hampers to the SAPS Brackendowns’s 67 minutes for Mandela Day, which Desiree and Danie Loggenberg secured for children in Alberton.MissTeeq Evening and Bridal wear is the proud sponsor for all Desiree’s designer outfits and Ascot Diet Clinic in Turffontein manages Desiree’s healthy lifestyle. To vote for Desiree, SMS ‘Desiree’ to 38585. Cold weather and the homelessLast week Alberton had night-time temperatures below -5˚C. Everyone was inconvenienced by the cold spell, with power cuts, water-pipes bursting from frozen water, and so on; but no one felt it more than people living on the streets. According to various studies, including an article by Bill Mitchell on http://commonhealth.wbur.org/ “The worst cases of weather-related hypothermia is when the daytime temperature might be in the 10s during the daytime and people on the street feel comfortable. But when the temperature plummets into below 0˚ at night, those who have fallen asleep outside can unwittingly experience extreme hypothermia, especially if they have been drinking alcohol or using

drugs, or if their clothing is wet from rain or the ground. On a warm day, your body cools down by opening blood flow to the skin by sweating. The opposite happens in the cold. The body shuts down blood going to the surface of your skin in order to preserve warmth closer to the heart. This can leave the extremities, particularly the hands and feet, with insufficient blood flow to withstand the cold temperatures.”The Alberton CMR Alberton provides the homeless with blankets and warm clothing, but are not able to do this without the support and donations of the public. Please contact Ankia on 011 907 2922 if you would like to contribute.

In memory of Tata MandelaPam Golding Properties celebrated the life and memory of Tata Nelson Mandela, on 18 July. Their team decided to support two events as they feel passionate about both organisations. One team visited the Alberton SPCA where they donated funds, food and 67 minutes of their time. “We truly thank our clients and colleagues in the community who joined us for our 67 minutes and who donated food and funds,” said Des Hauser, Pam Golding Alberton branch manager.

They are also passionate about proper schooling for children. They interacted to paint 36 class rooms with Meyersdal Square, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, school children, members and public servants of the Edenpark community at Opelweg Primary school. They cleaned, washed, hung blankets, stripped paint and painted their way into the “Joy of Giving.”

Donating blood for Mandela DayThe South African National Blood Service celebrated their 67 minutes with a Mandela Day Blood Drive at the Alberton Shopping Centre. Donors came in their masses to spent their 67 minutes donating blood.“This day reminds us that Nelson Mandela helped our country to be free from apartheid,” said Nonkululeko Kgabale, Donor Care Officer. One of the donors on the day, Paki Motaung, an employee of Mr Price in Alberton City expressed her gratitude by saying: “I decided to donate blood on Mandela Day for my 67 minutes because my blood could change a life.”

This day reminds us that Nelson Mandela helped our country to be free from apartheid.

Hands and rands for the childrenOver 200 volunteers from the Dare2Care Foundation and the Crossroads Church in Alberton paid a visit to the Amazing Grace Children’s Home on Saturday 19 July. The foundation has found this children’s home to be a sustainable project, phase one of which started on Mandela Day this year. Dare2Care volunteers lived up to the motto of “Using our hands and rands to uplift the community,” when they donated time and money to the children’s home. Among other things, they helped clean the home, they renovated the kitchen, helped with laundry, repainted the playing area and entertained the children. Grace Mashaba, who started the children’s home, explained that the home started in stables that were on the property. “I felt that the stables were perfect to renovate into rooms for the children because Jesus Christ’s first home was also a stable, where He was born,” she said. “I am extremely grateful and humbled that the volunteers from Dare2Care came out in the cold to help us today,” she continued.

FinancialThe three-step savings challengeSouth Africans, as a nation, are not good savers and we are becoming progressively worse. According to the South African Reserve Bank, South African households

were saving at a rate of 4,2% in 1994. In 2013, the household savings were down to 1,6%. Fortunately, however, there are steps you can take to beat the average.

Pay yourSElf fIrSTYou may intend to save what money is left after you have paid all your monthly expenses (including extra expenses that unexpectedly crop up), but the problem is there never seems to be any money left over to save, so saving often gets put off. The secret is to pay yourself first, before any expenses. Put money away for saving as soon as you receive your income. Ideally, set up a debit order that is deducted and paid into a savings account or savings plan. It might mean reducing your spending money to cover your expenses, but it will be worth the peace of mind knowing that you are essentially saving towards a better quality of life.

PuT your goalS on ThE clockDecide what is really important to you and what you need to be saving for – be it a house, your retirement, your child’s education or that much needed holiday. Putting money away each month is much easier if you know exactly what you are saving for, how much you need to save and, most importantly, by when. If you do not have an end goal, your immediate needs and wants will seem much more important and take preference. It is often advisable to meet with a financial expert who can help you prioritise your saving needs, work out how much you should be saving to reach your end goals and suggest the most suitable savings method. The variety of savings options available can be confusing. But because saving is so important, it is worth doing some research into the best savings vehicles for your needs.

Short-term saving: Most banks have various products designed specifically for saving. These include notice deposits, call accounts and money market accounts. You can start with a small monthly contribution and will be able to access your money at short notice.

Long-term saving: The most common investment vehicles include endowment policies, retirement annuities and collective investment schemes (unit trusts). With these vehicles you earn higher interest and they are good for disciplined saving as it is more difficult to access your savings.

avoId ThE dEbT TraPIn a recessionary climate, the last thing you need is excessive unnecessary debt, defined as debt incurred to buy things you do not really need, for example a flat-screen television and other luxuries. Try to avoid buying on credit as far as possible. With big purchases, such as a house or car, do the sums to check what the required repayment amount would become should interest rates go up. Remember, interest rates are cyclical and can fluctuate. You do not want to be in a situation where you cannot afford the debt repayments if the interest rate goes up and you then run the risk of losing your home. Ideally, you should be able to absorb the repayment increases into your budget as and when they occur. If interest rates do come down, you should use this as an opportunity to pay off more debt. As interest rates drop, the required debt repayment for your home or car loan, as well as other debt, will also drop. If you can manage it, pay the same amount into the loan as you were paying before the interest rate cut.

We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Brackendowns saPs, specifically detective fouche, detective nkomo and her colleagues. After recently being defrauded by the owner of a security company, we approached the Brackendowns SAPS for help. Detective Fouche went out of her way to obtain advice

on our behalf. Her guidance enabled us to open a criminal case.Detective Nkomo was appointed as the investigating officer. What a wonderful person she is - engaging and friendly and someone who clearly goes the extra mile to help people. At all times we felt that she had our best interests at heart, and wanted to see justice done. Together with

Detective Nkomo and her awesome colleagues, she worked to have the fraudster arrested on 16 July 2014. Although we do not know what will happen with this case, and whether the fraudster will be prosecuted, right now we know we have done something for the Alberton community. Thank you, Brackendowns SAPS, you guys rock.

Besorgde tennis ouer

MEETING: Members of the Provincial Investigation Unit and the SAPS Constables attend the cluster meeting.

Ex-Generations star motivates cops

Germiston Cluster Commander Brigadier S.P. Mdlankomo organized a meeting with a difference for all constables in the cluster on 10 July at Germiston SAPS. Motivational speakers at the meeting were Brigadier Mdlankomo, Pastor Daniel and well-known actor Sello Maake Ncube, who is best known in South Africa for his role in the

television soap opera Generations. Brigadier Mdlankomo thanked the constables for their hard work as foot-soldiers in the South African Police Service. They were also urged to become the leaders of the future, to obey the law at all times and not to succumb to the temptations of corruption.

While Alberton SAPS officers Constables Madonsela and Dlongolo were on their way to investigate a complaint of house-breaking, they saw two suspicious-looking men at the side of the road. After stopping and searching them, they found them to be in possession of suspected stolen property and arrested them both. The officers then went to the house that had been burgled, only to find that the two

suspects they had just arrested were, in fact, the house robbers - as the suspected stolen property found in their possession belonged to the owner of the house. As a result, the suspects were arrested even before the case was opened. Station commander Colonel Kubone commended her officers for always being on the alert and urged them to keep up their good work.

Get-away car crashes into palisadeOn Friday 18 July at around 10:25 a domestic worker in Pieter Street, Brackenhurst was shocked when an intruder suddenly broke the lounge-window of the home she was cleaning. She immediately locked herself in one of the rooms and pressed the panic button, while informing her employer about the incident.Fox Security responded to the panic alarm; and, on arrival at the house, spotted a blue vehicle reverse-parked on the premises and called for back-up.

The blue vehicle suddenly pulled off, with the back door still open. Two suspects took off running from the premises and three Fox Security armed-response vehicles chased the car towards Roy Campbell Street; but, at the corner of Roy Campbell and Theresa Streets, the blue car crashed into a palisade fence. The two suspects were arrested and detained at Brackendowns SAPS for house-breaking and theft.

Computer games that teach kids cruelty

From the desk of Forensic Audit Investigator Hennie Els

Parents, do you understand the dangers facing children who play certain computer games?During a recent investigation I discovered some alarming truths about the impacts of gaming on our younger generation. Before this, I had never really given the issue much thought, beyond occasionally scanning the obvious age restriction on the front covers of the games my son plays. During my forensic investigation into the impacts of these games however, I discovered how life-like and advanced the games have become. Simulation games, in particular, in which players actually perform tasks and make decisions as the main characters in the games, are especially dangerous. Besides the possibility of criminal prosecution for parents who purchase or condone such games, there is an even greater concern for the impact of the games on the developing brains of our children. Upon a closer look, it becomes clear that some of these games are educational tools for breeding violent criminals and rapists. Players are rewarded according to their crimes, which include rape, murder, torture and drug use. Even more alarming is the vibration on the controls in the player’s hands when torture is administered, like pulling teeth with pliers. The more violent the abuse administered, the higher is the excitement indicator on the screen, resulting in more rewards for the player. One such game is GRAND THEFT AUTO “V” or GTA5, which has an age restriction of 18 clearly indicated on the cover. The game was launched in September 2013 and before it reached the shelves, several countries banned it outright in order to eliminate its impact on their youths. After 39 years as a investigator who has attended many bloody murder scenes, gruesome autopsies and horrible crime scenes, I was shocked to find this material available in our country to our children. The game, which has over 100 hours of playing time, is outrageous and in my opinion will groom children to grow up without any respect or morals in life, making it difficult for them to abide by socially accepted norms and values. The game has already been banned in Britain, Germany and France due to its “extreme violence.” Even Brazil has banned it outright and, according to statistics, it is the most controversial video game in history.I took this game for evaluation by Dr Lorinda Bergh, who holds a PhD (Pretoria), MA Clinical Psychology degree, and practises as a clinical psychologist with more than 30 years experience working in the Department of Correctional Services with all types of offenders, but focusing mainly on the assessment and treatment of sexual and aggressive offenders.According to her evaluation children exposed to this game could develop the following:Impairment in their cognitive development;Problems with their social / and or interpersonal relationships;A decline in their performance at school or in their schoolwork [not performing according to their full potential];Behaviour problems [eg. regression, lack of empathy, cruelty to animals, etc.];Disrespect for authority figures; andPossible misconduct or anti-social behaviour. This is a URGENT call to all parents with teenagers to stand together and lobby to get this game banned from South Africa. The only way we can succeed is if we stand together and make our fears and voices heard. Please email me your comments to [email protected] and I will drive the campaign through the correct channels. I will also keep you updated with the process via email and in the press. If your child does have the game and you can sense a change in his / her behaviour please contact me urgently.

Whats the point of complaining?

The Consumer Protection Act has given SA consumers many new rights, and more power, when it comes to taking on suppliers over poor services or defective goods. But when is it worth actually pursuing a complaint through the Ombudsman and is it better than going to court? Consumer Goods and Services Ombudsman Adv. Neville Melville explains. The new mobile phone you have just bought stops working and the company refuses to replace it, or the furniture you paid for was never delivered. In the past you would have needed to go to a court of law for justice, but the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) now provides a forum to resolve complaints quickly and affordably. Dissatisfied customers can approach the CGSO, which will investigate the matter further and try to mediate a solution between all the parties involved. If no agreement can be reached, a formal mediation takes place, at which the parties are invited to put forward their cases and a mediator tries to facilitate a mutually acceptable settlement. “We’re able to facilitate over the phone and provide written assessments recommending how the matter should be settled,” adds Melville. He says the size of financial losses is not the only deciding factor that drives people to take a complaint further: “We’ve had claims for millions of rands, but also complaints about something as small as a litre of milk. Some consumers feel they should formalise a complaint simply out of principle – and we are happy to assist in almost all cases.”Cheaper, fasterThe benefits of seeking a solution through an ombud versus through the courts is that consumers are likely to get a faster resolution. The average age of cases closed by the CGSO is 16 days, while the average age of open cases is 74 days. “The best result we had was from a clothing retailer who agreed to a settlement within two hours of the CGSO sending the complaint through,” says Melville. “Compare that to the court system, which is both expensive and time-consuming and where you may wait years for a settlement.”He says not all cases submitted to the CGSO involve

monetary compensation – some complainants simply want what they see as fair – such as an apology or the system to be improved. Melville points out that evidence lies at the heart of informal dispute resolution. “The type of evidence you would need to build your case would include a till slip or proof of purchase, a high definition photo of the alleged defect or a copy of the brochure that the special was advertised in, for example,” he explains. “If it is a case of food poisoning, you would need to preserve the suspect food item and hand over to one of the health authorities listed on the CGSO website for testing.”Expert witnesses from a panel of experts may be called in if necessary and inspectors may be appointed. “In the past we have outsourced the inspection of cracked television screens to determine whether it was a factory fault or the result of an over-enthusiastic Wi player,” says Melville. In another case, a jeweller was consulted to determine the cause of damages to a valuable necklace and in other cases items can be sent off to the South African Bureau of Standards to check whether goods are up to standard. “Factors that would not be considered relevant during mediation include how many other complaints the company has listed against them on websites such as Hello Peter; how shocked, appalled or distressed or emotional the complainant was; or comparison to similar products.”The findings of the CGSO are not binding on either party, but if the issue is not resolved by the ombudsman, parties are informed of their right to approach the National Consumer Commission. The vast majority of complaints, however, are resolved at the Ombud level. “While we cannot award damages, we can persuade a supplier to do so,” adds Melville. “But if a soda bottle explodes and injures someone, as has been reported elsewhere in the world, and they want R1 million, we would suggest they go to court,” explains Melville. The benefits of resolving the issue outside of court, however, are obvious. Concludes Melville: “Mediation is free and less intimidating than a court of law; you do not require legal representation; and you’re far more likely to come out with a win-win solution.”

Two-time Momentum 94.7 Mountain Bike Challenge winner Kallen Williams showed himself to be one of South Africa’s rising young talents when he claimed his first ever win at the Bestmed Walkerville Mountain Bike Classic in Gauteng on 13 July. The former Toyota Cycle Lab rider slew mentor Andrew Mclean in a finishing sprint battle to take the 60km title by a single second in 2:20:20. Greg Anderson was third across the line at the Walkerville Showgrounds in 2:20:42. The 21-year-old pushed the pace from the start, opening up a gap of at least a minute over the Platberg climb. He held the chasers at bay until the halfway mark, when he saw a breakaway group of three riders attempting to reel him in.“The last half of the race is quite flat and

windy, so to staying away by yourself is a lot harder,” said the Alberton resident, who trains regularly in the area.“So I just backed off and waited for the other three to catch up.”The four riders worked together over the remaining kilometres until Williams launched a series of attacks in the closing stretch.“I started making a couple of moves about 5km out and eventually there were just the two of us (Williams and Mclean). I’ve raced against Andrew before, so I was confident that I could take him in the sprint.”In the women’s race, cross-triathlete Sylvia van Tromp showed her off-road mettle to take an uncontested win in 2:51:02. Runner-up Ronel van Straaten trailed her home in 2:57:21, with third-placed Jana Jonker a further seven minutes back in 3:04:15.

This annual road cycle event, now in its 19th year since inception, will take place once more on 21 September 2014. Sponsored by Rand Water, the Race for Victory is well recognised on the national cycling calendar as being a challenging and well organised event. Not only does Rand Water sponsor the event, but their staff also provide valuable assistance in terms of water points and logistical support. The various routes and distances on offer (150km, 110km and 54km) encompass the well known southern roads of Gauteng, with the start and finish venue being the Rand Water Zwartkopjies Pumping station situated just 15km south of Johannesburg CBD. This is a popular training ground for local cyclists. The elite and professional riders will cover the 150km distance, with the steep uphills and rapid descents of the scenic Suikersbosrand Nature Reserve being the main obstacle of their route. The best racing cyclists in South Africa regard the route as being of an international standard. Filippi leads Africa at Junior Open

South Africa’s Luca Filippi claimed a top 12 finish at the Junior Open Championship to top the African leaderboard at the prestigious biennial championship, presented by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A).The 15-year-old Milnerton golfer carded rounds of 74, 78 and 78 at the West Lancashire Golf Club to tie for 12th with four

players on 14-over-par 230.Filippi opened with a bogey, but erased a second drop at the fifth with a birdie at

the par-three sixth. He turned in two over after a third bogey at the ninth. His run of pars on the back nine was rudely interrupted by an eight at the par-four 13th.Without the expensive mistake, Filippi would have tied for sixth.Filippi was the top African performer among the seven players of the 21-strong African contingent who made the cut. The South African finished five shots ahead of Anita Uwadia in the final round. Regrettably, the zone trophies were based on net scores after 36 holes and the Nigerian golfer pipped Filippi for the African Trophy

The 2014 South African Mountain Biking Cross- Country (XCO) and Downhill Championships were held at Thaba Trails this past weekend with a record field of entries: 233 for XCO and 31 for downhill (based on online entries). Even talk on the ground between competitors was that they had never seen so many people compete and so many spectators. The XCO took place on Saturday and the Downhill on Sunday. Rourke Croeser (Kargo Pro MTB Team) claimed the 2014 South African Cross-country National Championship Elite men’s title in a time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 29 seconds. Second place went to Matthys Beukes 01:36:57 and third place James Reid 01:38:06. The Elite men completed 6 laps of the 4.5km dusty and rocky track.Croeser said this was his greatest achievement to date, “I’ve won every title since racing in the Sprog category, but being the Elite champ is being the champion of the country. I can wear this jersey on my shoulders with great pride. This is the greatest achievement to win.”Mariske Strauss (Orange Monkey Pro Team) was also smiling ear to ear when she put in a dominant performance to claim the 2014 South African Cross-country National

Championship Elite women’s title in a time of 1 hour 35 minutes and 35 seconds. She achieved this even after taking a tumble in the rock garden. The Elite women completed 5 laps. Strauss felt that racing in this event was a nice opener for her for the Commonwealth Games. Cherie Vale (Paarl Media) claimed the silver medal in a time of 01:39:10, while Candice Neethling (Time Freight VELOlife) claimed bronze in 01:40:40. The Downhill Championships was also highly contested but defending Champion, Tiaan Odendaal, took his third consecutive Elite men’s title with a time of 1 minute: 57 seconds.More talk on the ground showed that many riders welcomed the champions at Thaba Trails rather than Pietermaritzburg Cascades MTB park, saying that different riders should be given a chance to win rather than the local boys who practise at their home grounds at Cascades; but, on the other hand, some riders felt Thaba Trails was too dusty.Nevertheless Thaba Trails did an excellent job and Cycling South Africa extends a big thanks of thank you to Wendell Bole and his entire team at Thaba Trails, for preparing the superb and challenging course and for hosting the event. tame TIMES would like to commend Bole and the Thaba Trails team for bringing such a big event to the South and showcasing what we have to offer.
