YESTERDAY'S NEWS: For the second-straight night, the Tarpons were held to just three hits as the Fire Frogs clinched the weekend series with a 3-0 win on Saturday night…RHP Nick Nelson (L, 0-1) made the start in his Tarpons debut (3.0IP, 3H, 3ER, 3BB, 1K)…Hoy Jun Park (1-for-4, 2B, SB) improved to seven-for-seven in stolen base attempts…Isiah Gilliam (1-for-4) and Brandon Wagner (1-for-3, BB) had the only other Tampa hits…LHP Justin Kamplain (3.0IP, 3H, 3K) and RHP Hobie Harris (2.0IP, 2K) logged scoreless outings.
KING OF THE NIGHT: RHP Michael King struck out 11 batters on Thursday for a new career-high. The 22-year-old got into a groove after allowing an infield hit in the 2nd and retired 15-consecutive batters before exiting in the 7th. King's prior career-best in strikeouts was accomplished on April 10, 2017, when he punched out 9 Delmarva Shorebirds in 5.0IP as a member of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
LOAISIGA PROMOTED: RHP Jonathan Loaisiga was promoted to Double-A Trenton on Thursday. The 23-year-old made four starts with Tampa, going 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA (20.0IP, 19H, 3ER, 1HB, 1BB, 26K) and won the Florida State League "Pitcher of the Week" award for the period of 4/5-15. RHP Nick Nelson joined Tampa from Single-A Charleston on Saturday. The 22-year-old went 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA (24.2IP, 18H, 10ER, 1HR, 2HB, 7BB, 35K) in five starts with the RiverDogs, including a 12-strikeout peformance in 5.0IP on 4/13.
2018 ALL-STAR WEEKEND TICKETS ON SALE NOW: For the first time in franchise history, Tampa will play host to the Florida State League All-Star Game. Neither the original Tarpons nor the Tampa Yankees had ever hosted the event. The Home Run Derby will be on Friday, June 15th and the 57th Annual FSL All-Star Game will be played on Saturday, June 16th at George M. Steinbrenner Field. VS. FLORIDA: This will be the third of 14 scheduled meetings between the Tampa Tarpons and Florida Fire Frogs. Florida currently leads the season-series, 2-0. Tampa swept the season-series in 2017, going 12-0 vs. Florida, including 6-0 at George M. Steinbrenner Field and 6-0 at Osceola County Stadium.
SPLASH FROM THE PAST: The Tampa Tarpons are back for the first time since 1987. Over the offseason, the Tampa Yankees rebranded by becoming the Tarpons. The original Tampa Tarpons played baseball at Al Lopez Park (current site of Raymond James Stadium) from 1957-1987, winning Florida State League championships in 1957 and 1961.
TOP PROSPECTS: Tampa's opening day roster includes five names on the Baseball America Top-30 Yankees Prospects List: OF Estevan Florial (2), RHP Freicer Perez (13), RHP Trevor Stephan (18), RHP Jonathan Loaisiga (25) and INF Diego Castillo (28).
OSBORN RETURNS: Patrick Osborn returns to George M. Steinbrenner Field this season as the first manager of the newly rebranded Tampa Tarpons. Osborn managed the T-Yanks in 2016, winning the Florida State League Manager of the Year award after leading Tampa to its first postseason birth since 2010. Last season, Ozzy led the Single-A Charleston RiverDogs to the playoffs, extending his personal postseason streak to seven-straight seasons: 2015 short-season, Single-A Staten Island, 2014 Gulf Coast League Yankees 2 and 2011-13 Atlantic League Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
FOR STARTERS: RHP Albert Abreu (0-0, 2.45) will make his second start of the season. Last time out, took a no-decision vs. Charlotte on 4/29 (3.2IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 3K, HR, 61P/40S)…began the season on the disabled list after undergoing an emergency appendectomy in February.
2017: Began the season with Single-A Charleston, going 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA (14.2IP, 3ER) in three games (two starts) before being promoted to Tampa on 4/23, where he went 1-3 with a 4.19 ERA (34.1IP, 16ER) in nine starts…Missed nearly three months over two stints on the disabeld list with elbow inflammation…made two rehab starts in th GCL, allowing 1ER in 4.1IP…Pitched for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League, going 1-2 with a 2.60 ERA (27.2IP, 8ER) in six starts…was named the AFL "Pitcher of the Week" for the period from 10/16-21.
