Tarzan lives in the jungle in Africa. He has a lot of
friends. His best friend is a monkey called Cheeta.
Tarzan likes living in the jungle. He is very happy.
Jane is a photographer. She lives in London but
today she is in the jungle. She wants to take
photographs of monkeys. Jane is travelling with a
guide called Clayton. He is not a nice person. He
is a hunter. He is also an expert on surviving in the
jungle. Jane doesn’t know that Clayton’s favourite
food is monkey!
One day Tarzan and Jane meet in the jungle.
Tarzan likes Jane and Jane likes Tarzan. But Jane
does not like Tarzan’s smell! Tarzan never washes
his body, cleans his teeth or combs his hair!
So, Tarzan needs help from his animal friends.
He needs to learn about personal hygiene. The
elephant teaches him to wash his body. The
crocodile teaches him to clean his teeth. The lion
teaches him to comb his hair.
Meanwhile, someone needs to teach Clayton that
killing animals for fun is not nice! Maybe Mister
Crocodile has an idea…tarzan_flat_bw.indd 11 28/3/08 16:12:05
If you only have time for one lesson before the show to prepare you children. Here is a one-lesson activity sheet.
The Story of Treasure Island
The Jungle Walk
Explorer’s Diary
12) One-Lesson Activity
Read and listen to the story of Tarzan.
You are a jungle explorer. Write a page of your
diary. Say where you are, what you’re doing
and why. Say what the weather is like. Write
about who you met today and what they
look like. Describe what is happening at the
moment and what you are going to do next.
It’s a big green paradise,
Full of animals, use your eyes.
You see them all,
Doing the jungle walk.
Elephants and crocodiles,
Fish with feet and snakes with smiles.
You see them all,
Doing the jungle walk.
Everything’s free and easy.
Pick the fruit from the trees, see?
You don’t need money or credit.
Credit? Forget it!
Lions, leopards, lizards, too.
Greet a gorilla, how do you do?
You see them all,
Doing the jungle walk.

Teaching notes
Time
50–60 minutes
Level
Medium
Skills Focus
Vocabulary, listening, reading and speaking
Aim
To familiarise the students with the story, songs and vocabulary of Tarzan before seeing the show.
Instructions
The one lesson activity sheet is designed for teachers who only have time to prepare with one class before the show. We find that children who understand the development of the story and are familiar with some, or all of the songs, enjoy the shows even more! So we recommend that you begin with reading and discussing the synopsis of the show. Then move on to listening to the songs - allow the students to follow the text on song sheets. If there is time get them to sing along! Finally, look at the explorer’s diary. This activity can be done as a written, oral or homework activity.
Post-show activity
If you have more time after the show, go back and do any of the materials in the earlier activities.
