TC4PI TEACHER COMPETENCES FOR PLURILINGUAL INTEGRATION
TC4PI is a Comenius Multilateral Project that was launched and implemented with the
financial support from the EC under LLP.
The project, called “TEACHER COMPETENCES FOR PLURILINGUAL INTEGRATION” gathers six
institutions in five countries: Centro de Formaciam del Profesorado en ldiomas CFPI (ES) as
coordinator and Universidad de Valladolid (ES), Mykolas Romeris University (LT), The
University of J. E. Purkyne,Usti nad Labem (CZ), Regionalny O'Srodek Doskonalenia Uczycieli
"WOM" (PL) and Asist Ogretim Kurumlari, A .S. Doga Schools (TR) as partners.
The main reason for starting this project is the identification of a lack of clarity as to which
competences are required for teachers in order to integrate an intercultural dimension in
plurilingual education. This situation requires rethinking teacher education. Besides, it is
seen that there is a visible lack of continuity among the different lifelong training stages
according to the lifelong training policy claimed by the European Commission: starting in
pre-service teacher training (University stage) and continuing through in-service teacher
training.
Plurilingual Competence is the capacity to successively acquire and use different
competences in different languages, at different levels of proficiency and for different
functions.Intercultural Competence is the combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and
behaviours which allow a speaker to varying degrees; to recognize, understand, interpret
and accept other ways of living and thinking beyond his/her home culture.

The project aims to contribute to a plurilingual and intercultural education by designing a teacher
training framework oriented towards the development of teachers and professional competences
dealing with the intercultural dimension in plurilingual education. As the starting point of
Framework Document, bibliographical research on plurilingual and intercultural competence was
realized in the partner countries.Based on the bibliographical research, intercultural competence
has been conceptualized as a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours which
allow a speaker, to varying degrees, to recognize, understand, interpret and accept other ways of
living and thinking beyond his or her home culture.
The Network of pre-service teachers (University stage) and in-service teachers is created to
exchange the best practices between teachers and management/leadership. The questionnaires
were applied on the network. Based on an analysis of the results of the questionnaires on learning
languages and training in multicultural teaching, pre-, during- and post-job-shadowing protocols
were developed as tools for developing plurilingual and multicultural teacher competences.
The objectives of the project:
1. Design a teacher training framework oriented towards the development of teachers´ professional
competences dealing with the intercultural dimension in plurilingual education.
2. Create a network of schools of similar characteristics for the exchange of best practices between
teachers and management/leadership.
3. Research on competences. Analyze official documents on teachers multicultural competences.
4. Make exchanges/job shadowing/observation period/team teaching by teachers employing an
intercultural approach to plurilingual education.
5. Create training courses, courses, seminars and training modules on the development of specific
intercultural and plurilingual competences.
6. Evaluate teachers´ didactic approaches and linguistic and intercultural competences of students
in the different languages present at school/high school, observed in the different subjects,
additional education activities & specific of the whole education community at school.
7. Disseminate and exploit results /outputs of the project.

Job shadowing is the most innovative aspect of the TC4PI Project. Through job shadowing TC4PI
intends to promote collaboration and exchanges among teachers. The presence of teachers from
other countries in the school community would enhance attitudes of curiosity as well as a deeper
understanding of linguistic and cultural diversity.
Pre job shadowing ; The teachers as job shodowers from partner countries prepare their school
presentations using the plurilingual and multicultural elements with the steps of multiculturalism
as Level of self-awareness , Emotional response to difference, Cultural interaction. They update
their profiles and upload their presentations to the platform www.tc4pi.eu They start meeting
with other teachers on the platform and share their feelings about the job shadowing. While Job
Shadowing ; Job shadowers visit the schools in the partner countries and observe the pupils there
They also perform their lesson related to their country’s culture and watch also the other job
shadowers’ performances and do reflections.Post Job Shadowing ; Job shadowers share their
experiences with their colleagues and other jobshadowers and also enter the platform to share
these experiences with other teachers on the VLE
The protocols are intended as part of the job shadowers’ portfolio which will be used in the
assessment of the teachers’ plurilingual and multicultural competences during the training and the
post-job-shadowing period. By enhancing collaboration, dialogue and reflection job shadowing as a
contextual training tool contributes to an understanding of plurilingual education and to the
development of teachers’ competences.
Five / International Job shadowing events have been planned and two of them were realized in
Czech Republic (06-10 October 2013) and Poland (10-14 March 2014).
*In Usti Na d Labem 6 host teachers in the Czech Republic + 8 job shadowers from the partnership
countries were involved to the first JS.

involved to the second JS.
