Designed for applications that use multiple high-powered discrete diodes. Because of the high compliance voltage, the Vue-MV can control as many as 7 diodes in series at up to 10A

The water-cooled laser diode stack controllers provide drive currents up to 120A and compliance voltages up to 24V

a laser driver is a constant current source, delivering exactly the current to the laser diode that it needs for operation. They have a very linear characteristic and producing a low level of noise. Dependent on type they are providing different limiting functions to protect the laser diode against damaging, like spike protection, esD protection and soft start function.

They are providing different possibilities to connect the laser to the driver, determined by the internal connections between laser

and built in monitor photo diode. A few different basic types can be defi ned. Each product line is optimized for a different range of

applications.

Packages

Packaging of components and modules includes proper heat sinking of the circuit elements and usually includes the appropriate cabling to the laser diode and power supply. Instruments include a power cord and user access inside the case is not necessary. An instrument comes typically with front panel, knobs and buttons and display to be controlled by a computer via USB, RS-232; RS-485 or GPIB and usually powered by AC. A module doesn’t include the display or power supply, and has the minimum required adjustments.To monitor status, an external volt meter is required. The module datasheet provides a transfer function to convert the voltage to actual laser diode current or photodiode current.Component do not have any moving parts, and the operating parameters needs to be set with external resistors or capacitors. They are mounted directly to a PCB with plate-through or surface mount (SMT) pins. They are available as DIP (dual-in-line package) or SIP (single-in-line package). Safety features are common to all different packages.

How to choose the right driver

• It is recommended to start with the current and voltage requirements of your laser diode - Maximum Output Current

• Compliance Voltage is the maximum voltage that can develop over the laser diode at maximum current. Important to choose a driver with high enough compliance voltage - especially if it has to drive multiple diodes in series or bars.

• Decision about package style is next step.

• Modulation bandwidth and noise are typically the next most important specifications.

TemPeraTure conTrollerThe temperature control system maintains a device ( in that case a laser) at a constant temperature. It uses a current or voltage source to drive power through actuators, based on feedback from a temperature sensor.

Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) – is a sensor that uses the resistance temperature characteristic to measure temperature.Two basic types of RTDs are used: the wire RTD, usually made of platinum, and the thermistor, which is made of a semiconductor material.The wire RTD is a positive temperature coefficient sensor only, while the thermistor can have either a negative or positive temperature coefficient.Thermistor is a common temperature sensing device made of a semiconductor material that exhibits a large change in resistance for a small change in temperature.A Thermocouple (T/C) is made by joining two dissimilar metals. This junction produces an electrical voltage in proportion to the difference in temperature between the hot junction (sensing junction) and the lead wire connection to the instrument (cold junction).As actuators thermoelectric or Peltier devices and resistive heaters can be used to precisely control the temperature of the devices.

There are a few different types of temperature controllers realizing• temperature control without laser diode drive• temperature control separate from laser diode drive• temperature control and laser diode drive as a combined system (Dual or combined driver)

The PID controller algorithm involves three separate constant parameters, and is accordingly sometimes called three-term control: the proportional, the integral and derivative values, denoted P, I, and D. Can be interpreted in terms of time: • P depends on the present error,• I on the accumulation of past errors, • D is a prediction of future errors, based on current rate of change.

The weighted sum of these three actions is used to adjust the process via a control element such as the power supplied to a heating element.
