From the PulpitRabbi Michael Simon

Halacha tells us that the can-dles that we light on Hanukkah are not be used for anything other than being lit. They exist to publicize the miracle of Hanukkah and to remind us of the story of the Maccabees. They shouldn’t be used to provide heat or light or to cook with. In that regard these candles are merely symbolic, and they each represent a specific aspect of Jewish life. So maybe looking at the Hanukkah candles as symbols of different as-pects of Jewish life, might help us

to internalize the true nature of the holiday. The First Candle represents Jewish Learning. The Syrians

sought to end Judaism by forbidding Jewish learning. We light this candle in memory of all the Jews who disobeyed the edict and continued to study and teach Torah. Study and knowledge lead us to deeper understanding of God and greater obser-vance as Jews. As we light these Hanukkah lights, may we be inspired to seek the light of Jewish learning.

The Second Candle represents Jewish Living. When the Syrians found that they could not extinguish Jewish learning, they attempted to extinguish Jewish living by forbidding our re-ligious rituals of sacrifice, circumcision, Shabbat observance and kashrut. Refusing to turn away from the Torah, our people resisted and, led by the Maccabees, fought for the right to live as Jews. We are fortunate that we do not have to fight for our right to live as Jews today. Let us glory in that freedom by participating fully in the rich tradition we have inherited. May these Hanukkah lights inspire us to seek a fuller Jewish life for ourselves, our family and our community.

The Third Candle represents Courage. The Maccabees were courageous leaders. But they did not fight alone. Ordi-nary people joined the war against the Syrians. They lived in caves and fought with farm tools. People who were not sol-diers found strength in God and in the belief that Jewish tra-dition must survive to be passed on to another generation of Jews. This strength brought them great courage. We, too, can find courage to overcome the battles in our lives if we look to God, to our tradition and to our community. As we light these Hanukkah lights and recall the courage of our ancestors, may we find renewed courage within ourselves.

The Fourth Candle represents Hope. We, like the Mac-cabees, have known fear and despair. But we have learned from the Maccabees that hope can conquer both, and lead us to triumph over evil. May these Hanukkah lights inspire us to work toward the realization of a Jewish vision of the world at peace, a place of justice.

The Fifth Candle represents Peoplehood. The story of Hanukkah is also the story of divisiveness within the Jewish people. Today, we suffer the strains of discord within our reli-gious family. Our futures are tied up, one with the other. We are our brothers’ keepers. As we light these Hanukkah lights, let us rededicate ourselves to working to unite all Israel in the common bond of Ahavat Yisrael, a love of the People Israel.

The Sixth Candle represents Tzedakah. Our tradition re-

Cantor’s Corner

Chanukah is the festival of lights and is illuminating our world with positive impact. The Delightful Story of Chanukah tells of the great triumphs of the Maccabees and their commitment to preserving the light of Torah and spirituality for generations to come. Despite all odds, a small

impromptu army was able to go beyond themselves and overcome the great-in-number Yevanim. Not only does this story tell of triumphs in the battle, but also how we as individuals can overcome setbacks and challenges – and discover the full distance of our potential.

The knowledge of how to live our lives has been already given to us, as Jews. The decision for us is whether or not we want to learn and use it. Arguments, doubting and questioning are part of who we are but we must not forget the shape can be changed – not the content. Judaism has survived many tests throughout the centuries and has always come out on top.

Judaism is not only a philosophy, but also a built-in system with structure, foundation and framework. As a country with a president or a city with a mayor or, if you want, an orchestra with a conductor, so is a synagogue with its rabbi there to guide and strengthen the spiritual life of the community and it’s cantor who leads the congregation in prayer.

During the days of Chanukah we sing in the blessing: “…she asah nissam la’avoteinu ul’imoteinu bayamim hahem uvaz’man hazeh…” which we translate as: “who made miracles for our fathers and our mothers from ancient days until our time”.

May miracles always happen in all of our lives.Cantor Michael

cords that during the war against the Syrians, our people con-tributed not only towards the cause of defeating the enemy, but continued to practice tzedakah, taking care of those less fortunate than themselves. Today our enemies include hunger, disease, poverty, ignorance and tyranny. May these Hanukkah lights inspire us to rededicate ourselves to carrying on the tradi-tion of tzedakah in order to bring greater justice to our world.

The Seventh Candle represents Holiness. The Syrians desecrated our Temple with idols, but when our people won the war, they restored and rededicated the Temple to God. As we light these Hanukkah lights, let us rededicate ourselves this Hanukkah to better serve God and to truly be a Holy People.

The Eighth Candle represents Peace. The story of Hanuk-kah is a story of war fought to secure peace. As we light these lights, let us rededicate ourselves to pursuing peace in our own troubled world. And may our efforts culminate in the ultimate peace our tradition promises for the world: the coming of the Mashiach.

As you light your candles during Hanukkah, think of these symbols as you light each one. And hopefully these Hanukkah candles will kindle a flame within you to rededicate yourselves to Jewish living as it did for our ancestors so many years ago.

President’s Message

I hope you realize, that we at Temple Beth Kodesh, are blessed to have such outstanding clergy. Rabbi Michael C. Simon has been with us for 10 years. He has led this congregation through hurricanes, electrical problems, leaking roofs and more. With his guidance,

Temple Beth Kodesh has withstood the test of time, and is growing. Rabbi visits our sick and tends to his flock. Our members actually stay awake to listen to his sermon on shabbos, not like other shuls (whom I won’t mention). How many Rabbis can leyn Torah like Rabbi Simon? Have you attended any of the adult education classes? If not, then you are really missing something.

Cantor Michael Glozman has been with our Temple for about one year, and what a year it has been. His voice is unbelievable! From my vantage point on the Bimah, I look out on the congregation as they strain to hear every note. Some of us even try to sing along and harmonize. For those of us that are Hebrew challenged, we have transliterated versions of all the songs. Cantor Glozman brings new tunes to old classics, while still retaining the Kavanah in our prayer services.

I hope you are looking forward to the February 22nd, 2015 concert. Cantor Michael (Misha) will entertain us with the broad depth of his musical knowledge. Make sure to get your reservations in early. Looking forward to seeing you there.

All the best,Len Epstein, President

News from the

SisterhoodShalom,So far this year, Sisterhood

has 122 members and there is always room for more.

Sisterhood has two year-round programs: Rosh Chodesh learning sessions with Rabbi Simon and book discussions facilitated by Ronda Bellsey.

We had more than 70 people attend our first general meeting featuring the Psychodramatists from the Faulk Center for Counseling, who performed a show titled, “Seniors and Their Adult Children: Can’t we All Get Along?” We laughed. We cried. We were entertained.

Sisterhood Shabbat will be on December 19th and 20th with many Sisterhood members participating in the services. There will be a Shabbat dinner on December 19th. The dinner, catered by Diamond Caterers, is $36 per person. Please send your reservation to Marion Goldberg or Claire Zimmerman. See flyer on another page in this bulletin for further information. Sisterhood will sponsor the Kiddush on Saturday morning.

On January 11th, at 10:00 am, we will be sponsoring a free documentary with comments by one of the filmmakers, Philip Shane, son of Marci and Frank Kearly. The title of the documentary is “Making Trouble”, which is about six Jewish entertainers: Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner, and Wendy Wasserstein. Each of these stars brought something new and unique through their talents, but all shared the gift – and the burden – of being funny, being Jewish and being female. There is more information on another page in this bulletin.

On January 20th, we will have our annual card party, including bridge, canasta, dominoes, mah jongg, etc. More information to follow.

CARPOOLWe now have the best problem Temple Beth Kodesh could ever ask for: a crowded parking lot!!!

Please, if you possibly can, try to carpool to shul. In the Telephone Directory you will find the names of the communities we live in. Carpool and save not only gas but also an extra spot in the parking lot.

An Open Letter to my Temple Family Unfortunately, due to some serious medi-cal issues, I was forced to resign from my position as Vice President in charge of membership. However, I have not re-signed from my temple family. You all mean too much to me. I will continue to support the temple whenever possible and be dedicated to this wonderful House of Worship. Many, many thanks to my Membership Committee who were so dedicated and helped make our functions such a suc-cess. It was wonderful working with you. I also would like to thank all of you who showed such concern for me during this difficult time. Your cards and telephone calls were so gratifying and they were sincerely appreciated. I miss you all and hope to see you again soon. Sherry Bernstein

Temple Beth Kodesh Sisterhood Presents!

Making Trouble: Three Generations of Funny Jewish Women

Sunday, January 11, 2015 @10:00 AM

Remember … Molly Picon … Fanny Brice …

Making Trouble: Three Generations of Funny Jewish Women tells the story of six of the greatest female comic performers of the last century — Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie

Tucker, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner, and Wendy Wasserstein.

Hosted by four of today’s funniest women — Judy Gold, Jackie Hoffman, Cory Kahaney, and Jessica Kirson — it's the true saga of what it means to be Jewish, female and funny.

“What is it that makes funny Jewish women so funny…and so Jewish? Is it a nose wrinkled just so, accompanied by a devilishly sexy grin or a jolting and sarcastic punch line? Is it the acerbic humor of

generations of immigrant and first-generation women who fought for a place in America with their brains and their wit, and at the same time needed to make a living?

Making Trouble celebrates three generations who, for all of the reasons above, successfully went from vaudeville and the Yiddish theatre to Broadway, from Ziegfeld’s Follies to Saturday Night Live.”

Produced by the Jewish Women's Archive Directed by Rachel Talbot

Men’s Club Chatter

My Dear Fellow TBK Member’s and Friends:

I would like to follow up regarding the letter of September 19th (WANTED A FEW GOOD MEN). I want to thank those

members that responded. Five new temple members have joined the Men’s Club and have volunterd to work with the Men’s Club and the board. Let me tell you this is a Mitzvah.

As I said in one of my past Shalom articles that my goal is to make the Men’s Club an important fund raising organization for the temple.

The board voted to have a General Membership Meeting on January 25th 2015. The meeting will start with a Complimentary Breakfast. The subject will be regarding future plans for the men’s club. The flyer will have more details,so look for it in this months Shalom. Our October 26th brunch was well received and everyone had a wonderful time. Plans are in the making for 2015 with something a little different. Kudos to all of you who worked very hard at setting up and serving and cleaning-up. I thank you all.

Special reminder that we are in the midst of our annual renewal and new Membership drive for 2015. Invoices and a Corresponding letter have been sent out to all temple members. Please return the invoice with your check to me or drop it off at the office.(Ladies are also invited to join as Associate Members).

FUNDRAISINGWe are in full bloom now.

The Journal is being chaired by Pauline and Allan Tapper and they are hoping you will ALL buy and sell ads. It is so important to the financial health of our shul. We need to raise a lot of money this year so let’s all take this campaign very

seriously and make the Journal a great success. Last year we raised over $20,000 for our shul and this year I have such high hopes for an even greater number. Please……….

The Concert, starring Michael (Misha) Glozman and friends promises to be such an exciting event. Seats are selling quickly so please send in your money soon. The Gala will be more wonderful than anything we have ever had at TBK. The room will look like the Waldorf Astoria (so I exaggerate a little) and the food, I promise, will be absolutely fantastic. Everything about this event will be “over the top.” Please come and support our one major fundraiser. Be a part of what will be a truly grand evening.

I continue to be amazed at how much money our pushkes raise for the shul. Over $4000.00 already and thanks to some very kind, generous and loving people the money continues to come in. Please make sure you have a pushke. If you don’t please call me. I just happen to have a few sitting in my trunk and can get one to you quickly.

I want to end with a note about Israeli Bonds. This year Temple Beth Kodesh exceeded any previous year by over 50%. I am so proud of all of us who purchased Israeli Bonds and also so proud of the person who tried to fill George Brindis’ shoes. It is a pretty impossible job to fill George Brindis’ shoes but Jerry—you did a fantastic job and I am really proud of you.

Looking forward to a successful year of fundraising and fun!!!!

 Jewish Views of the Afterlife

with

Reb Simcha Raphael, Ph.D.

Tuesday December 9, 20147:00 PM

Temple Beth Kodesh501 NE 26th Avenue

Boynton Beach, Fl 33435(561) 586-9428

Simcha Raphael, Ph.D. is Founding Director of the DA’AT Institute for Death Awareness, Advocacy and Training, and teaches in the Department of Religion of Temple University, in Philadelphia. He is also in private practice as a psychotherapist and bereavement counselor. Ordained by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi as a Rabbinic Pastor, he is author of Jewish Views of the Afterlife.

Does Judaism believe in the afterlife? Unequivocally, the answer is yes! Unfortunately, in the modern period we have lost touch with much of the traditional Jewish wisdom on the afterlife journey of the soul. In this presentation, we shall explore Judaism's teachings on life after death - particularly in the traditions of Jewish mysticism - and endeavor to understand the contemporary relevance of these teachings in dealing with the human encounter with death.

TELEPHONE DIRECTORYIf you do not want your name and address in the new Telephone Direc-tory please call Carrin Simmons, 561-808-8490. If you do not call Carrin your name will be placed in the directory and we will be able to call you when we have to. This year the telephone directory will be a part of our Journal. Most of the other temples use this system and it seems to work very well. Also, please note that advertisers only receive tear sheets (samples of their own ads) and not the entire Journal so you do not have to worry about having your information spread.

Tell Carrin if you want your name included with just the address and tele-phone omitted or if you do not want any information in the directory.

We sincerely hope you will all want to be included in this new and we hope very improved Telephone Directory!!!!

2015 TELEPHONE DIRECTORY

Yes, you read that number correctly---2015. We’re doing another direc-tory because we have so many new members. What a wonderful pre-dicament!!!!

Please – if you have any corrections to the last directory – send the at-tached form into the office. And, if you are a new member please fill in the community you live in so we can list that information also.

And, I hate to be a broken record but if you would like to help sponsor the cost of printing this give me a call. This year we are hoping to in-clude the telephone directory in the journal so we will have to print many more than we did in previous years and the cost will be much greater.

Being A Part of Our GrowthThe Sylvia Brown Wall of Honor plaque is being used for the Growth Fund. There are various categories starting at $500, $1000, $2000, $5000 and up.You may contribute any amount over a period of

time by making your checks payable to Temple Beth Kodesh and referencing the Growth Fund. Once you have accumulated the necessary dollars, your name will be added to the plaque in the appropriate category.

This does not mean in any way that we are eliminating the Yahrzeit, Misheberach, JNF Trees or the Kol Nidre fund categories. This plaque is being used to help maintain the Temple in order to keep on growing.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call Fred Brown at 561-735-9537.

Awarded levels of merit may continuallty be earned through accumulated donations and may be added at anytime with the grateful acknowledgement of Temple Beth Kodesh.

We must and can continue our growth and acceptance in the Boynton Beach community.
