PSSA has a history of strong competition, meaning we do need to select students who show the highest skill level combined with a commitment to train. For those not selected this time, our Friday School Sport program is excellent. It incorporates specific skill programs to develop skills for the PSSA sports and in the past we incorporated tennis and lawn bowls into the program.

The school Swimming Carnival is on tomorrow and is always a competitive event. As most children compete, it’s a big job to time and record all races, we really appreciate the assistance given by parents to time-keep, marshall and be our ’lifeguards’, as it certainly keeps the carnival running smoothly and efficiently.

STUDENT NUMBERS As parents who have been here for some years will know, schools are staffed according to the number of students enrolled in the school with a variable formulae related to each grade of students. We have 706 children enrolled, which is the same number as 2016. As the younger end of the school has a lower student to teachers ratio (average class size of Kinder is 20; Year 1 =22; Year2 =24 and Years 3-6 =30) it means that the Kindergarten students are ‘worth more’ when calculating staff numbers. For the last 4 years our Kindergarten enrolments have been close to 100 and demographer’s projections indicated that would be the case this year. However we have 92 Kindergarten children this year. It appears other local schools are experiencing a similar unforeseen drop in Kinder numbers.

What this means for our school is, the formula results in a different staff allocation. This means we are keen to enrol some additional children to secure our current staffing ratio. If you know of new families likely to move into the neighbourhood please let me know as I do have to confirm our actual student numbers to the Department of Education this week, and it would be ideal to be above the required ‘magic number’.

Many thanks for your support, Cathie Ferguson

School Communication!! Dear Parents, Please be aware that ALL school communication is conducted via the Skoolbag app. If you have not yet downloaded this resources, instructions are here for your convenience. In the app, you are able to access all permission notes, newsletters and general school alerts are sent out as a message alert directly to your smartphone. You are also able to provide the school with absent notes and change of address and / or phone details via the app. Skoolbag also provide access to the Michael Gross, Parenting Ideas program, which provides a hugely beneficial resource for parents on a range of topics that are encountered by students at various ages.

Thanks, Office Staff.

Swimming Carnival – Tuesday, 7 February

Event Information Program of events

Parking, and spectator admission at the swimming carnival Please note that parking restrictions in Aquatic Reserve car park apply – this is a 3 hour time limit. There will be a $3.10 admission fee charged to all spectators which is to be paid to Aquatic Centre staff upon arrival.

Canteen use at the swimming carnival Apparently the Warringah Aquatic Centre canteen has changed and does not sell nearly as many sugar based products as in the past (yeah!!). Students should not need to bring any money to the carnival as a packed lunch, drink and morning tea should suffice. However if students need to purchase items at the canteen there will only be limited opportunities given by supervising teachers.

Swimming Carnival information Please have your child at the school by 8:20am this Tuesday so they are ready to board the bus at 8:30am. As many know we will have a 25m freestyle event for Year 3 and 4 students. These boys and girls events will be held after the 50m freestyle and anyone who has swum in the 50m is not allowed to take part. There is not a 25m event at the zone level so successful swimmers in this event will not progress to the zone level in the 25m. Event information and the program are linked to the school website. Finally, we are greatly appreciative of all the parent helpers who have already volunteered but if anyone else thinks they can assist please email James Ellis on [email protected]

Thanks to AFL Forest Lions On Friday at assembly Tony Eyres, the co-president of our local AFL club the Forest Lions, presented FPS with a large bag of AFL balls and bibs. This generous donation will hopefully help us continue the strong tradition of AFL for years to come. For the next 5 weeks at Killarney Oval from 3 to 4pm, the Forest Lions are running a free AFL skills clinic for boys and girls. Among the experienced coaches helping out is Tim Schmidt who is an ex Swans player and currently coaching the GWS Ladies Team. Even if AFL isn't your game, these Sundays are a great chance to kick the footy around and get some expert advice. Please see the flyer linked to this week's newsletter for more information.

Drumming Group Forestville's growing drumming ensemble will begin again this week with a bang! Students in Year 2 - 4 are invited to join. This year we will again form one large group that meet each Friday. To join the group, students must be able to bring along a ‘djembe’ each week. An instrument should only be bought if your son/daughter is willing to commit to meeting weekly to practise and perform with the group. Students are required to commit to at least one semester (two terms) at a time. After the second week of drumming (Friday Week 4), no new additions to the group will be made until Term 3. This is to assist the group's ability to progress on new material each week. Djembes can be purchased from a range of places, however Mona Vale Music has provided consistently good service to our school over the years and is often recommended as a local option. Below is a link to their Toca djembe' range. http://www.monavalemusic.com/collections/djembes Of course second hand drums bought online are also a great option! I am excited to begin another year of percussion with our talented drummers at Forestville.

Please contact me if you have any further enquiries.

Run Forest Run, Forestville Public School’s major P&C fundraiser is due to be held on Sunday 19 March. Last year’s Fun Run and Fair was a huge success and it was wonderful to see all the kids with huge smiles on their faces as they crossed the finishing line. Plans for this year’s event is well underway and both the school and the P&C would be extremely grateful if every family could get fully involved in the event both by registering to run and also volunteering to help with the running of the event (we can’t do it without you!). Much of last year’s funds were used to install air conditioning in 7 of the classrooms over the summer. The P&C aim to get air-con in all the classrooms over the next two years to funds raised from Run Forest Run are essential to the project. There are lots of ways you can help:

Register to take part. Registrations are now open go to: www.runforestrun.com.au. Early Bird registrations receive: a free sports patch (similar to a PSSA patch which children can add to their sports uniform) and a water bottle.

Volunteer to help the event. Every little bit helps from handing out flyers, manning a stall, marshalling the roads on the day. Sign up here: http://signup.com/go/jdYp3A

Spread the word! Invite friends and family from outside the school to take part, “Like” and Share the Run Forest Run Facebook Posts.

Get involved in the fair - this year we have a flea market so that parents or friends can take a stall and sell

on old toys, clothing and books. Not only is this a great way to recycle and add another dimension to the fair, you might also make a small profit. Check out the fair page on the Run Forest Run website page for details. The cost of a 3x3 stall for FPS parents is only $40. We will also be showcasing FPS at the fair with dance and band performances.

Over the following weeks further details regarding the run and fair will be provided, in the meantime more details can be found on: www.runforestrun.com.au
