The Three Pioneers Came to Town– and it was a very different town

The other day Wolf-Dieter Jonner, Jürgen Zechmann (both retired from Bosch)and Dietmar Hackner (retired from Opel) showed up in Arjeplog. They came to see what is now the world’s largest winter test area and to meet old friends. They came to remember things, people and places from the past, in which each of them played a very important part.

However, the past that they reminded each other of, bears no resemblance to today’s effi cient hi-tech testing, to the thousands of engineers who all wear security badges and to the locked doors and guarded gates.

Th e three men are all part of the history of car testing and have contributed in many ways to making Arjeplog the largest winter test area in the world. Th e very fi rst car testers were from Swedish SAAB, Volvo and Folksam, an insurance company. Th ey came to a small Saami village called Varjisträsk, north of Arvidsjaur. It was a very primitive place with an outdoor toilet and most testing was done on public roads and on a tiny ice track.

In the beginning of the 1970’s some German testers were driving around in the north looking for a place to test the newly invented ABS systems. Th ey found Varjisträsk and the 20x800-metre track that Rune Karlsson from the village provided.

Soon after that, these same Germans found Arjeplog and were pleasantly surprised that there was a brand new hotel (Silverhatten) with indoor toilets, TV in the rooms and space for a garage and an offi ce.Th ey also found cleared tracks on the frozen lake that were used by locals to land small aircraft.

• You may have seen a French fi lm team last week around Arjeplog. Arjeplog and Sweden will feature in a French TV show on France 5, called Echappées Belles on March 28.

Th e concept of the documentary show is the discovery of a country through the eyes of a person who has an interesting story or role.

Th e term “échappées belles” signifi es a beautiful escape and they wanted to fi nd places and people that permit their audience to participate in this escape, far from the touristic guides.

One of their 6 minutes reports from Sweden will be about Arjeplog and the car industry, showing how Arjeplog transforms during the winter season because of the car testing on the ice.

Th ey also want to show how the life of the inhabitants of Arjeplog changes during these winter months and also how the car testers live and work in Arjeplog.

At that time, if the car started and they made it down to the lake to do some tests, they sometimes had to use brooms to sweep the tracks clean.

Hackner remembers back to the fi rst time they took the car on to Lake Hornavan, which is the deepest lake in Sweden. Of course, they could not trust that the ice would be strong enough for their big Opel Admiral, so they put it in auto and let it go driverless on to the lake. Th at was the fi rst time, the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

Wolf Dieter Jonner, also known as the father of ABS, is an honorary citizen of Arjeplog. He remembers that they used to go into the kitchen at Silverhatten in the evenings and prepare meals for themselves and for their friends. Th e staff of the hotel would also join their parties.

In the 1980’s more and more people started coming to Arjeplog to do winter testing and by the beginning of the 1990’s English, French and Italian engineers had found the excellent testing conditions in Arjeplog and the locals went from calling the foreign guests ‘Germans’ to calling them ‘car testers’.

In December 1990, we published the fi rst issue of Th e Arjeplog Times. We realized that information in English, a language that everyone could un-derstand, was necessary to help make the foreign guests feel at home, have a pleasant stay and be successful in their work.

Th e three retired, German gentle-men played a very big role, each in their own way, in the most important change ever to take place in this area. During their visit this time, they had a lot to talk about and many old friends to meet.

Jürgen Zechmann is busy writing a book about his time in Arjeplog, in which there will be many funny, dramatic and interesting stories. He is also looking for somebody who can translate his book into Swedish.

Some of the people who came to test in Arjeplog also took a personal interest in doing whatever they could to repay Arjeplog for what it had given to them.

Both Hackner and Jonner belong to the exclusive group of people who have been appointed honorary citizens of Arjeplog. Others, like Jürgen Zechmann have come very close to this honour.

When they look around in Arjeplog today, they see many changes, both good and bad. Th ey see progress but they are not really convinced that all the progress is positive.

For instance, they have seen for themselves as well as heard from many of the car testers who are here today that working here has become less like being in ‘Arjeplog’ and more like being in Germany.

“I feel that we had a more creative approach to our tests than is possible today”, concludes Zechmann.

Home: Vaihingen/Enz, near Stuttgart, Germany.

Occupation: I am a function software development engineer for ESP, for vehicles heavier than 7 tons.

Dream car: A family van with the engine in the rear and the driver seat on the front axel. For example a VW multivan com-plete with all the hi-tech applictions such as ESP.

Present car: We have three cars in the family:VW Touran and an Opel Corsa B (for everyday use, to and from work).I also have a VW T3, single cab from 1986, which is soon a veteran.

Spare time activities: I inherited a small vineyard from my grandmother that has been in the family for a hundred years or more.

Working with the vineyard takes a lot of my spare time when I am home in Germany. It produces about 1000 litres of wine per year. I enjoy this hobby and I give away most of the wine that we do not use ourselves.

In Germany, we do a lot of skiing, both alpine and cross country.

of Arjeplog’ but the weather has been bad, both windy and no visibity on the few Sundays that we have been off work.

I am very happy that my daughters have learned, very quickly, to ski and this is the fi rst winter that we have been skiing the whole family together.

I also like playing with electronic stuff , I enjoy the technical details. I like to fi x things such as cars and things around the house.

What is good in Arjeplog?I have a long list of things that are good here: the town is nice and the people are very nice. I like the snow, the forests, the lakes and the landscape. I like the private houses that we stay in while we are here during the winter. Arjeplog is such a small place and yet you can get almost anything you need. Th at is impressive.

In terms of food and service, the best is when you order private catering and Bente Sundström at Cartest is truly wonderful. She sees to it that everything is perfect.

What is bad in Arjeplog?Th e coff ee you get at the restaurants here, especially after lunch tastes really bad! It is hardly drinkable. I think it is really bad that the only café in town closes at 3 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon. Generally, there is no passion and no professionalism at most of the restaurants. Sometimes, we have been embarrassed to take our customers to some of the restaurants.

Th e staff is not very service-minded, and how can a hotel pub run out of beer on a weekend night?

Th is is really not good but quite easy to fi x. Th e managers have to see what is happening at the restaurants, this is very important.

Of course, the most important thing, is the health services that just seem to get worse and worse.

In my spare time in Germany, I also volunteer at the Red Cross and I am very concerned at the lack of health care here, especially in the evenings and on weekends. Th is is critical!

What music you enjoy?I like Queen, Toto and Van Halen and the kind of music that they play.

What is important in life?To be healthy and of course, the family. Also, it takes time to see if things are good or bad, as the saying goes: Only after 7 years can you really know if something is good or bad. I have been in Arjeplog for 7 years.

Welcome to the Winter Market

Cathrin Söderberg is employed by Arjeplog Kommun and has a variety of tasks. She is the coordinator of the winter and autumn markets as well as the webmaster of the kommunen’s website. Her job also includes the task of marketing Hornavan-skolan (the secondary high school) and organizing and coordinating the work-placements of the pupils at the school, especially at the various car testing companies.

This is her column with information concerning this week’s winter market.

Th e traditional winter market will take place from Th ursday to Sunday, March 6-8. It is an open-air street market in the centre of town, where you can fi nd Saami and local handicraft, local food, jewellery, knick-knacks, sweets and lots of other things.

Most of the shops are also open Saturday and Sunday and have special off ers. Many of the restaurants and pubs have special events on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Social functionTh e Swedish Queen Kristina founded the market in early 1640. Th e intention was trade with the Saami people.

Th e market had an important social function and you were able to meet people you only saw once a year. You heard the latest news and gossip, for instance, about people who got married and the ones who had died.

You also paid your taxes, visited the priest or the local public prosecutor.

Traditional marketIt is a tradition for people who come from Arjeplog to visit the market, to shop, to meet friends and have a souvas (smoked reindeer meat) kebab, among other things.

Age: 22.

Married? No, but I have a girl-friend who lives in Gothenburg.

Home: Arjeplog, for the last 5 years. I grew up in Mogadishu in Somalia and came to Arjeplog because of the war there. Th en I got a job and found a place to stay as I wanted to make my own life. I stayed because I like it here.

Company: Coop (Konsum) super market where I have worked for two and a half years. Occupation: At Coop I am responsible for the frozen goods and I order the products. I also work at the cashier’s check-out counter. I like my job and I meet a lot of nice people. I also work for the Kommun as an interpreter, when they need my services.

Favourite food: I like chicken curry with rice.

Spare-time activities: I train at the gym. I used to play a lot of football, but now there is no team in Arjeplog, there are not enough people who want to play. I like to watch football matches, for example the English football. I also like to play on my Playstation. I enjoy going for walks such as the Vauka Streams, but that is only when there is no snow.

What’s good in Arjeplog/?It is quiet and peaceful. Everyone knows everyone (almost) and people are very kind and nice. In a big place, like Malmö or Gothen-burg, you are so anonymous but I prefer it here. Th e Nature is nice and I like to walk in the forest or swim at the beach in Nåtti when it is warmw. Th e weather is good here, not like in Gothenburg where it is always windy.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?It is so far away from everywhere. It takes a long time and is expensive if you want to go to the south of Sweden, for example. It is also a little too small, it would be good if Arjeplog was the size of Arvids -jaur, for example, where there are a little more than double the amount of people to here.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of music. I like UB 40.

What’s important in life? First of all, it is important to be healthy.

I think that you should always try to do your best in everything you do.

And if you come to a new country, like I did, then it is so important to learn the language.

I think the most important issue is actually the meeting arena. You plan, for example, to go and buy some socks and you end up talking to many of the people you meet along the way, for an hour or two or three and forget to buy the socks.

Nowadays, the winter market is getting smaller, one reason being that there is less accommodation available for the market salesmen and for the visitors. Many visitors come

from Norway which is very important for the trade but they can only come for the day, unless they have friends or family they can stay with overnight.

Handicraft market and exhibitionsTh ere is a local handicraft market at the Silver Museum, as there was last year, where you can buy hand-made products that are mostly from the area. You can visit art exhibitions both at the Silver Museum and at Vuxenskolan (adult education centre on Drottninggatan). If you are interested in music, visit Kyrkströmsgården (the low building to the right of the church) and listen to instrumental music or go to a gospel choir concert at the church on Saturday. During the market weekend, the streets in the centre of town will be closed to traffi c from Th ursday until Sunday at 20.00. Drott ning gatan becomes a two-way street and should only be used by people who live there and Konsum Coop customers. Music Brings People TogetherSandra Jonsson is a local woman who plays the trumpet when she is not driving for Tjintokk in Slagnäs or work-ing at the school as a substitute teacher. She and three car testers have been playing music together for awhile and on Sunday they will have the opportunity to play during the church services that starts at 11 o’clock.

Th e wind ensemble is made up of two Bosch car testers from Germany: Frank Kniel plays the cornett and Matthias Hackl, the trombone. András Varga, Knorr Bremse from Hungary also plays the trumpet. Sandra believes that music unites people and she says that it is a good feeling to play with people from diff erent backgrounds and cultures.

On Sunday, Maria Sundén who is the church musician will accompany the ensemble on the piano. Th e Silver

Choir, Rebecca Stålnacke are also involved and the services will be led by Anders Mattsson, assistent vicar.

Coff ee will be served after the church services, arranged by the parish of Arjeplog and Arjeplog’s Pentacostal congrega-tion.

Innebandy - popular sportLast season Argentum, the local innebandy (fl oor ball) team, qualifi ed into the second division. On Saturday they are playing the fi rst of three fi nals against Öjebyn. If the match is played in Arjeplog chances are that the sports centre will be completely crowded with crazy fans. Ten percent of the town’s population regularly go to see the matches and to cheer their team. Th e number one sport in Arjeplog is innebandy which is played by boys and girls of all ages and a large part of the town is involved in one way or another. Th e game is easy to learn and very nice to watch. It is lightning quick. Six players in the team play 3 x 20 minutes eff ective time (clock stops at the whistle).
