My good friends in Christ Jesus,

A former seminary professor and good friend of mine recently posted the following comments in his pastor’s note to his parish. I find his insights helpful as we continue in the uncertainty of the pandemic. I continue to offer some of his thoughts in this week’s bulletin and also next weeks. Here are some of his words:

“Choose communion over consumerism. The pandemic is forcing a national debate between safety and the economy as we watch how people respond to the crisis. What our patchwork of responses have taught us, perhaps more than anything else, is that unless you have some roots in a spiritual practice that holds all of life sacred and encourages a communion with all creation, facing the enormous challenges ahead of us will be nearly impossible. Fear is already producing scarcity in a nation of plenty, evidenced in all the hoarding, the competition between states and nations for resources, the price gouging, etc., all of which are exacerbating global uncertainty. We are also beginning to understand the critical role that low-wage workers, minorities and the undocumented play in a global economy. People are now aware that shelf-stockers, janitorial workers, waste haulers, crop pickers, transportation and material movers, and administrative support personnel are at least as essential to the good running of society as are the corporate leaders, doctors, scientists and presidents that we so lionize. Consumerism exploits and devalues relationship because it views a person’s worth only in terms of what the person can produce. Communion results from the realization that we are essentially interdependent and interconnected, even when we are not proximate.

Choose personal responsibility before personal freedom. The maze of burdensome laws, and regulations that most of us are forced to contend with in modern life results from the desire for freedom without any responsibility to the common good. If you have no awareness of the common good, your first question will be “What do I want?” “What do I prefer?” or “What pleases me?” The pandemic is making visible the gross disparities in a culture of privilege. In the grand scheme of things, it really does not matter what I want. What matters is what we all need to co-exist.”

As your pastor here at the Cathedral I share some of your anxiety about the uncertainty of these times. Let’s take advantage of this unique opportunity to re-define who we are as a people of God. Our Catholic tradition offers many ways for us to grow in trust so as to receive and know the immense love that our God wishes to share with us. Have a blessed week. Fr. Jim

People of St. Mary’s,

Thank you so much for all your prayers and support. It is very encouraging and humbling to know that so many people who are zealous for our good Lord are supporting and praying for me. The Vocation Cross prayers, prayers at Mass and receiving the Holy Sacraments at St. Mary’s helped nurture my decision to enter into seminary. Please continue to pray for me and I also will be praying for the people of St. Mary’s Cathedral. Let us always strive to do God’s will and always contemplate our enteral home. God Bless, Samuel Ogden

1st Sunday of the Month Ministry Schedule (September 5th and 6th )

We have been using a program called “Eventbrite” to encourage people to reserve a registration to attend the weekend masses. We have found that this practice is not practical for our community. So, for the time being, we will cease using this service. This past week we did have to lock the doors for the Spanish 9 am mass as all of our spaces were full. Our Spanish 1 pm mass was almost completely full. We encourage our Spanish speakers to take advantage of the Saturday evening 6 pm mass. This mass is the vigil mass for Sunday. All of the prayers and readings are the same as Sunday’s. This mass “counts” as the Sunday mass.

Lord Jesus Christ, our Divine Physician, we ask you to guard and protect us from Coronavirus COVID-19 and from all serious illness. For all those who have died from it, have mercy; for those who are ill now, bring healing. For those searching for a remedy, enlighten them; for medical caregivers helping the sick, strengthen and shield them. For those working to contain the spread, grant them success; for those afraid, grant peace. May your precious blood be our defense and our salvation. By your grace, may you turn the evil of disease into moments of consolation and hope. May we always fear the contagion of sin more than any illness. We abandon ourselves to your infinite mercy. Amen . -- Pedro de la Cruz

Pick of the week: Go to www.stmarysgi.formed.org. This week Fr. Jim recommends the video series: Why Believe? Volume 1 (15 volumes). The New Evangelization requires a new apologetics, that is, a defense of the faith that responds to the questions that believers and non-believers alike are asking today with philosophical and theological arguments rooted in Sacred Scripture, Catholic Tradition, and the best philosophical reflection available.

First Reading — The name of the LORD has become like fire burning in Jeremiah’s heart (Jeremiah 20:7-9). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — Be transformed; renew your mind; discern what is good (Romans 12:1-2). Gospel — Those who lose their lives for Jesus’ sake will find them (Matthew 16:21-27).

Today’s Readings

Vocations. That many people may hear the call of Christ and follow Him in the priesthood and religious life. Pro Life. That all people will come to value human life as God’s precious gift to be accepted and loved rather than a burden to be destroyed.

Holy Father’s Prayer August 2020 The Maritime World: We pray for all those who work and live from the sea, among them sailors, fishermen and their families.

Holy Father’s Prayer September 2020 Respect for the Planet’s Resources: We pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner.

THE CROSS OF JESUS

The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

"¿Qué prefiero?" o "¿Qué me agrada?"

Padre Jim.
