Monthly Luncheon at Arrowhead Stadium

With over 120 attendees, including staff from several chambers in Eastern Jackson County, and a fantastic presentation by former NFL player Kendall Gammon, the August Monthly Membership Luncheon was a special one. Attendees found themselves laughing, empathizing and reminiscing on thoughtful actions friends or mentors had taken in their lives. And, since many of us sent our kids back to school this month, Gammon also left the attendees with bit of homework:

“Go home and thank someone who didn’t know what a positive effect they had on your life. You’ll be glad you did.”

The Public Policy Committee has again set dates to receive requests for needed legislation or changes from our membership. Testimony is being sought on issues that will or should be considered by the legislative bodies of the City of Independence, Jackson County, the Missouri General Assembly, and the United States Congress.

The input received from the public hearings forms the basis for the items or issues considered by the Chamber for inclusion in the Chamber’s 2016 Legislative Agenda. Items identified through this process will be explored, debated, and prioritized by the members of the Public Policy Committee during the early fall and forwarded to the Chamber Board of Directors for final consideration in November. The approved 2016 Legislative Agenda will be published and distributed to all members of the Chamber.

Public Policy Hearing Dates

Have you heard of the brand new Independence Civic Council (ICC)?It is a new committee within the Independence Chamber of Commerce created to help support local activities that help Independence.

The committee members decide what to support and how much to donate. Each member gets one vote after presentations are made by the requesting group. Some examples of activities the ICC may support are a school tax levy, City safety tax, 4th of July celebration, City wide economic study, etc. Fifteen community leaders have already joined and are excited about our first meeting in September!

If you would like more information, please call or email Hap Graff at 816-252-4745 ext. 5 or [email protected].

Three public hearings have been set for the following Mondays: September 21 • October 5 • October 19

Presentations will be scheduled in 15 minute intervals. Members desiring to address the Public Policy Committee during one of the scheduled public hearings are asked to contact Kelsey at

816-252-4745 (ext. 0) or [email protected] to secure a time slot on the agenda.

Non-Chamber members$70 for a half table$125 for a full table

Criteria to join: • Must be a member of the Independence Chamber of Commerce. • Donate $500 to the committee per year

Breakthrough Thinking: Beliefs, Bias and Blind SpotsThursday, Sept. 24, 3:30-4:30 pm, Chamber Boardroom, 210 W. Truman Road, Indep., MOTo be successful in today’s world, we have to work smarter and think differently. How does the way we think affect how we do business and how we outperform our competition? How do our beliefs affect our productivity? How do our expectations create blind spots and what can we do to uncover new opportunities? Denise Mills, Chief Mindset Officer of LeaderFuelNow, will share some insights as to how our beliefs create biases that affect our success. Together we will explore techniques to think differently and break through the limiting beliefs that affect our effectiveness.

Denise Mills, is the founder and Chief Mindset Officer of the Leader Fuel Center. Her company facilitates Executive round tables, customizes leadership development programs, manages networking groups, and conducts Board retreats and strategy sessions.

While Fortune 100 companies are her primary clients (DuPont, Toyota, and members of C200 etc.) Denise also works with many local orga-nizations developing strategy, impacting culture, and coaching leaders. Internationally, the U.S. State Department engages LeaderFuel to facilitate discussions on economic development strategies for entrepreneurs.

Denise has been recognized as one of the Women Who Mean Business by the Kansas City Business Journal and honored twice by Thinking Bigger Business Media as one of the 25 Under 25 (25 top small businesses under 25 employees).

Seminar: Purpose Driven Business & Happiness is Serious Business

Thank you to those who joined us for the 8th annual Eggs and Issues State of the Schools Address featuring the Superintendents of our 3 major school districts in Independence: Dr. Jim Finley of the Blue Springs School District, Dr. Jason Snodgrass of the Fort Osage School District and Dr. Dale Herl of the Independence School District.

"Don't be afraid to show your positivity!" Lori Worth, owner of Vibe Communications and founder of Spark, Inside Out, encouraged as she spoke to us on the afternoon of August 27. "Anyone can be a change agent. Anyone can cause a ripple effect of positivity."

She launched her presentation with a couple quick games just to make each other smile. Why? Because smiles are contagious. Happiness is contagious and is good for employees. And, if it's good for employees, then it's good for business. Therefore, happiness is serious business.

After a powerful hour of activities, examples and reflection, Lori left the attendees with a lasting impression. "No regrets. Just growth."

Small Business Spotlight: Bank of Grain Valley

The Bank of Grain Valley is a locally owned and operated community bank with two locations in Eastern Jackson County. It was organized and open for business in 1905 with an average employment term of over 15 years.

In the early 1970’s, when the present ownership acquired the original location in Grain Valley at 500 Main Street, one of the primary goals of management was to establish a presence in the vibrant and growing Independence economy. It accomplished that objective with the opening of a branch at 14801 E 40 Highway.

A great deal of the success experienced at the two locations can be attributed to the abundance of social, family, economic, educational, recreation and civic opportunities available to its constituents.

The Chairman of the Grain Valley Bank Board, Allen Lefko, has been a member of the Independence Chamber of Commerce since 1966 and served two terms as Chairman of the Independence Chamber.

The leadership of the Bank of Grain Valley has seen financial and personal resources invested in the activities and goals of the Independence Chamber of Commerce reap rewarding results. With the Chamber representing its many constitutes, there is a better chance to achieve governmental, economic and social goals than individuals and businesses alone. As the age old adage says: the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

“We are pleased with the service the Independence Chamber of Commerce has provided to the local business Community.” – Allen L. Lefko

Motivation of the month: “I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow.

When there’s that moment of, ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this,’ and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.”
