From the Howard Suamico School Distrct Board

Student representative to the Boardsubmitted by RachelCeaglske, Student Represen-tative to the HSSD Board

Communication is an inte-gral part of the functioning ofany group. The Howard-Suamico School Board is noexception. Dialogue withinthe Board must be profes-sional and smooth, thus Pol-icy Governance wasimplemented. The staff andadministration needed to beon the same page as theBoard, so staff is welcomeand encouraged to attendBoard meetings. Communi-cation with the community, who are the stakeholders ofHSSD, is also a key part ofthe Board, so CommunityConversations were hosted atpublic locations. Finally, two-way communication betweenthe student body and theBoard is important becausethe purpose of the Board andthe District is to prepare stu-dents for a changing world. Thus, in 2006, the nonvotingposition of Student Represen-

tative to the Board was cre-ated.

I, Rachel Ceaglske, servedin this position for the dura-tion of the 2017-2018 schoolyear. In this role, I gave thestudents’ perspective aboutdecisions the Board wasmaking. I brought the con-cerns of the student body tothe Board and worked to findsolutions to issues that stu-dents had. I also broughtmessages from the Boardback to the students. Duringmy time on the Board, I real-ized what an integral part Iwas playing in the successfulcommunication of the Board.I was a valued member, andmy thoughts on behalf of thestudent body were consideredseriously.

This experience has beenvery eye opening for me. Ihadn’t realized that the innerworkings of the District wereso complex. It is comfortingthat there is a team of admin-istrators and Board memberswho work tirelessly behindthe scenes to shape HSSD

into the progressive districtthat it is. The role of theBoard, which is to be acces-sible to the community andaccountable for the perform-ance of the schools, is a deli-cate one because it requiresbalancing the needs of thecommunity with the needs ofthe school while focusing onthe development of studentswithin the schools. TheHSSD Board has taken onthis challenge and has suc-ceeded. The Board has beenflexible and ever changing tomeet the needs of those itserves.

The HSSD Board of Edu-cation sets the standard highfor the district, and the ad-ministration, teachers, andstudents have risen to thechallenge. I am grateful to be

a part of a district with a ded-icated Board, forward think-ing administration, passionate teachers, andstrong students.

The Howard-SuamicoSchool District has greatthings in store for the future, and I look forward to seeingwhere the Board of Educa-tion leads the community.

Here’s achecklist forchanging jobs submitted by Ilya Dayter, Ed-ward Jones Financial Advisor

A few generations ago, itwas not uncommon for work-ers to stick with a single jobfor their whole careers. Butfor many of us today, frequentjob changes are a fact of life:The average employee tenureis just over four years, ac-cording to the Bureau ofLabor Statistics. So, assum-ing you’re going to switchjobs a few times, you’ll wantto be prepared.

Here’s a checklist of thingsyou can do to smooth thesetransitions and help your fi-nancial situation:

• Build an emergency fund. Some of your job changesmay be involuntary, soyou’ll want to have a cashcushion handy–just incase. One smart movewould be to build anemergency fund, contain-ing three to six months’worth of living expenses, with the money kept in aliquid, low-risk account.

• Consider your options foryour former employer’s401(k) plan. If you had a401(k) plan with your for-mer employer, you havethree main options: Youcould leave your moneyin the plan, if the em-ployer allows it; youcould move the moneyinto your new employer’splan, if permitted; or youcould roll the funds overto an IRA. You’ll want toweigh the “pros” and“cons” of these choicescarefully before making adecision.

• Choose investments fromyour new retirement plan.If your new employer of-fers a 401(k) or similarplan, you’ll need tochoose the investmentswithin the plan that aremost appropriate for yourgoals, risk tolerance andtime horizon. Contributeas much as you can affordto the plan, and considerincreasing your contribu-tions every time yoursalary goes up.

• Make sure you’ve got

health insurance. Thehealth insurance offeredby your new employermay not begin the minuteyou start your job. Giventhe high costs of medicalcare, you’ll need to makesure you are protecteduntil your coverage kicksin. So, for that interim pe-riod, you may need toconsider the federal healthinsurance marketplace,COBRA continuationcoverage or private med-ical insurance. You mightalso be eligible to be cov-ered under your spouse’shealth insurance. And youmay want to learn whatyour options are for healthsavings accounts (HSAs),if available.

• Review your new benefitspackage–and take steps tofill gaps. Your new bene-fits package may includelife and disability insur-ance, but these grouppolicies may not beenough to fully protectyou and your family. A fi-nancial professional canhelp you quantify yourprotection and insuranceneeds and offer guidanceon how much coverageyou may require.

• Understand your incometax considerations. Get-ting a new job may in-volve income taximplications, such aschanges in your taxbracket, severance pay, unused vacation and un-employment compensa-tion. And if you arethinking of exercisingstock options, be awarethat this, too, can be a tax-able event. Finally, if youhave to move to take anew job, you may incursome relocation and jobhunting expenses thatcould be deductible. Youwill need to discuss allthese issues with your taxprofessional.

Starting a new job can beexciting–and challenging. But you may be able to makeyour life easier by putting theabove suggestions to work.

Running Injuries

Running injuries are the most common of all sports injuries. They often occur slowly over a long period of time due

to repetitive injury and may begin as mild soreness or stiffness that does not respond to stretching and icing.

Common running injuries include:

• Acute trauma (trip, fall or collision injury) • Shin splints

• Low back pain • Ankle/heel pain (Achilles tendonitis)

• Hip pain (IT Band syndrome) • Foot pain (Plantar fasciitis)

• Knee pain (Patellar tendonitis)

The best ways to prevent most running injuries include wearing proper footwear and staying hydrated. Make sure to

warm-up and stretch appropriately before running while stretching and ice application is most beneficial after

Each year, Big Brothers BigSisters of Northeastern Wis-consin honors top supportersand individual volunteerswho make significant contri-

the organization recognized:• Big Brother Al Jamir and

Little Brother Baylee withCommunity-based Matchof the Year

• Big Brother DonGustafson and LittleBrother Ethan with Site-based Match of the Year

• Nicolet National Bankwith the President’s award

• Steven Maricque with theMarie Krohn Award rec-ognizing an outstandingmember of the Board ofDirectors

• Tom Lehrer with the PaulJ. Schierl Award recogniz-ing an outstanding volun-teer.

“All of these award recipi-ents gave something pre-cious: Their time,” says KatieHess, executive director. “Weare honored to have partnerswho are passionate about thelife-changing impact mentor-ing has on our Bigs and Lit-tles.”

Big Brother Al Jamir andLittle Brother Baylee werenot only awarded the Com-munity-based Match of theYear Award, but Jamir alsowas named Wisconsin’s BigBrother of the Year by BigBrothers Big Sisters agenciesacross the state. A loss of eye-sight at age 2 proved to be aminor setback for Baylee, who with Jamir as a motivat-ing force, has excelled in aca-demics and stretchedboundaries with exceptionalexperiences.

“There are certain things wecan do and there are certainthings that we can’t becauseof his loss of sight. But he’snever used his loss of sight asan excuse, and what an amaz-ing, amazing trait,” Jamirsays. “By being associatedwith Big Brothers Big Sisters,I think it helps me to be a bet-ter community servant, tohelp others, to pay it for-ward.”

Jamir also has been nomi-nated on the national level asBig Brother of the Year. Theaward will be presented inJune at the Big Brothers BigSisters National Conference.

Matched for four years, BigBrother Don Gustafson andLittle Brother Ethan were rec-ognized with the Site- basedMatch of the Year award fortheir commitment to thematch. Despite challengesalong the way, Gustafsoncontinues to be a consistentresource and friend to Ethanthrough their meetings atSunrise Elementary School inSturgeon Bay.

Nicolet National Bank re-ceived the President’s Awardfor its consistent and growingsupport of financial resourcesover the years, as well as em-ployees’ volunteerism — andfrequent efforts that go aboveand beyond — as Bigs andboard/committee members.

Steven Maricque, a memberof the Board of Directors andBig Brother, was recognizedas an outstanding advocateand supporter of the organiza-tion. Maricque, president ofthe Bellin Health Foundation, also has helped to recruitdozens of Bigs throughout thecommunity.

A volunteer for more than10 years, Tom Lehrer wasrecognized for his commit-ment to the organization serv-ing not only as a Big Brother, but also for efforts to recruitvolunteers throughout thecommunity, raise money —especially through the BowlFor Kids’ Sake event — andbuild a series of networkingevents for current Bigs.
