Just a thought - we are always thought of as a nation that talks a lot about theweather. ‘Wasn’t it hot/cold yesterday?’ ‘It never seems to stop raining at themoment.’ ‘We really do need it to rain, the gardens are so dry.’ It often seems thatwhatever weather we have got is not the weather we want! But it is our variedweather that makes our countryside and gardens as beautiful as they are. As welook around our gardens or drive or walk through the countryside there is so muchbeauty to see. This summer seems to be particularly beautiful, everything is growingand the flowers look lovely, the crops are growing and soon the harvest will begin. We need the sun and the rain, the heat and the cold to provide us with our food andflowers and as God promised Noah, ‘As long as the earth remains, seedtime andharvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.’ We justhave to make sure that the rich harvest God provides is shared fairly betweeneveryone.

CHRISTIAN AIDMrs Evans would like to thank all those who gave generously for this year’s

COMMUNITIES SHARE VIEWS TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND CARE SERVICES IN SUFFOLK

We are Healthwatch. We listen to your views about local NHS and social careservices so that we can make them better for everyone. We have just launched our fourth annual report, which covers the year 2016/17. Ittells you how we have been working and using people’s experiences to shape, influence and improve local services throughout the year.Five ways that health and care services have improved:

1. Maternity services increased support for birthing partners and changedpolicies so that birthing partners can stay with mum and baby overnight.

2. People will receive improved support and information to help them managetheir risk of complications from foot disease caused by diabetes.

3. Residential and nursing homes have made changes that will improve theexperience of some of Suffolk’s most vulnerable people following visits by ourvolunteers.

4. We made safeguarding alerts that have led to immediate improvements topeople’s care.

5. We delivered patient feedback that helped to shape pathology services inSudbury, including improvements to IT systems and access to appointments.

In our annual report, we highlight outcomes from our work that has included specificresearch projects, visits to local services and work across all levels of health andsocial care. Further examples include:

● Decisions to keep In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Marginalised and VulnerableAdults services were strongly influenced by public feedback we obtained inpartnership with NHS leaders.

● Prompted by calls from young people for more information, we developed anew poster and information card that will help young people to find support.

● We worked closely with new GP partnerships to shape their plans fordeveloping services by engaging patients within surgeries.

● We were central to the launch of a new Dementia Forum for Suffolk that willaim to change the way dementia support is provided in Suffolk.

In addition, we have helped many people that contacted our free Information andSignposting Service to find support with their health and wellbeing needs.

Andy Yacoub (Chief Executive) said:“People have a keen interest in their health and social care services and rightly so.Throughout the year, we have met many people; talking to them about theirexperiences and using them to influence decisions about our local services. We areproud of the impact we have made and, with increasing awareness of Healthwatchthroughout the County, we know that our voice and influence can only increase withpositive outcomes for patients, service users and carers throughout Suffolk.”

More information is available within the Healthwatch Suffolk Annual Report2016/17. Visit: www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk. You can also call 01449 703949 tofind out more.

Well we made it! The end of the academic year is upon us but the fun doesn’t stopthere. Already we have a host of activities planned for September and the newschool year. We are looking forward to the residential trip to African Adventure inOctober, where our year 5 and 6 pupils will take part in a host of adventurousactivities, including building and sailing their own designed rafts (we usually end upvery soggy) and working together in a team to solve mysteries!

Reflecting on the last few weeks of term, we have experienced an emotionalrollercoaster as we have watched our year 6 pupils come to the end of their time withus and blossom into the lovely young people they have become, ready to start theirnew adventures in High School. We wish each and every one of them the very bestas they move into this new phase of their lives and learning.

Children from Wolves have been completing their topic on castles and topped it offwith a castle day with full medieval banquet! Parents were invited to join us as wedressed up in medieval costume and served food and wine (blackcurrant juice, honest!) to our guests. The children prepared music from the Tudor period toperform and children and parents alike took part in a Tudor dance. The Tudor themecontinued with Adders class as they completed their learning on the subject with aTudor Day. The costumes were fabulous, as was the Tudor museum that thechildren put together. Others in the class cooked a very tasty pottage and parentscame along to share in the fun. (See photos on page 14)Classes across the school have had some lovely end of year days out; the whole ofBentley Primary spent a fabulous day at Bourne Park with a picnic and games, notto mention getting rather damp in the paddling pool. Years 5 and 6 went on theannual outing to Pleasurewood Hills and demonstrated why our pupils are so highlythought of – their representation of our schools was exemplary and everybodythoroughly enjoyed the day.

The academic year was topped off by an emotional assembly at the church to sayfarewell to our Year 6 pupils and a fun-filled leavers’ BBQ. We would like to take thisopportunity to thank all those people in the community who have supported us thisyear, all those individuals who saved Sainsbury’s vouchers for sports equipment forus, including the village shop who put a collection box out! Their support didn’t stopthere and we are grateful to the shop for allowing the children to use their facilitieswhen we have been doing PE on the field. So many people in the village havecontributed to the year, including our very good neighbours, the Cooper family andthe Baker family (Don Baker very kindly let our metal detecting club loose on hisland!). We thank you all and look forward to working with you again in the nextacademic year.

Finally……We are still looking for a Midday Supervisor; if you are interested, pleaseget in touch – Bentley Office 01473 310253

DOCTORS SURGERY TRANSPORT ROTAWe welcomed one new volunteer this month, and lost one, with our thanks to RosiWithers who needs more time with growing family. Demand is pretty constant. We do pick up several people on a regular basis from Bentley, yet no-one has yetcome forward from the village as a volunteer driver. With the current rota ofvolunteers the burden is not very great. If you are able to help give me a ring on01473 310992, or contact me at [email protected] a correction. Someone wrongly reported that the East Bergholt scheme hadbeen suspended. I am pleased to report that this is not so. I have spoken at lengthwith Greta Abbs who organises the East Bergholt scheme who tells me that it is fullyoperational and covers the villages of East Bergholt and Holton St Mary. Bothschemes rely on a healthy number of volunteer drivers, so if you want to help theBergholt scheme the Surgery will put you in touch with Greta.Chris Yule

BENTLEY STORES

July 14th saw the first anniversary of the Bentley Stores, our Community Shop, and itwas celebrated with tea and cakes in the shop, the presentation of a £5,000 award fromthe Working Together Community Fund and a trip to Clarence House for somevolunteers. The three quite different separate events marked a significant landmark ofthis very successful community shop!As the front page of the Bentley Bugle shows, Bob Feltwell, Zoe Mobley and JackieTiller were honoured to attend a summer garden party hosted by HRH the Prince ofWales at Clarence House. The three Bentley Stores volunteers joined beneficiaries, supporters and ambassadors of the Prince’s Countryside Fund, which gave money tohelp build the shop and to celebrate the fund awarding over 200 grants. It was a specialevent blessed by glorious weather and was an excellent opportunity for the threeBentley residents to represent all the volunteers involved in the shop and share theBentley Stores success story with others who are working within their own communities.A £5,000 boost to the shop came in the form of a Working Together Community Fundaward from Suffolk County Council. The fund, which is administered by SuffolkCommunity Foundation, recognises outstanding service delivery or community activityas a result of increased collaborative working. It supports community groups with a “rollyour sleeves up” approach. Bentley Stores successfully demonstrated what had beenachieved by working together to qualify for the award. No need to bring any sound equipment– microphone and amplifier will be provided. And no need to book – just turn up.See the website for details. Finally a plea – we love our pub, which is the result of many people’s hard work andcommitment over the last 4 years. One of the things our customers like best is thatit is largely staffed by volunteers – people from their own community who arerecognised and trusted. BUT – a big BUT – we need more volunteers to servebehind the bar and wait at table, and we would love you to come forward to help ifyou can. Nothing to be afraid of – we were all new once – and you will be supportedwhile you learn the ropes. If you’d like to know more, pop into the pub and pick upa volunteer leaflet.Gill Pink

WHITE ADMIRAL BUTTERFLIES

White Admirals were present in Bentley Old Hall woods some 50 years ago alongwith other spectacular butterflies such as Purple Emperor and Silver-washed Fritil-lary. However, changes to the habitat of these butterflies led to their disappearancein the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. It is pleasing, however, to report that WhiteAdmirals have returned to Old Hall woods and are breeding there. First spotted byDr Michael Bamford on 30 June, 2004, when only three were counted, this specieshas been seen in these woods every year since. Two were seen this afternoon (14July 2017) by my wife, Ann, and numbers are estimated to have increased to 12.Even better news is that the White Admirals have spread to Bentley’s Great Martinswood, where two have been seen this year.Colin HawesPhotographs which accompany this article were provided by Butterfly Conservation, towhom we give grateful thanks (See page 14)

Vil lage History

WHEN FLOWER SHOWS WERE SO DIFFERENT BEFORE THE 1914 - 18 WAR

The twelve annual flower shows before 1914 took place in September, someweeks later in the year than nowadays and after the end of harvest, for mostfarm workers much the busiest time of the agricultural year. Also the day of theweek concerned was a weekday, not as nowadays a Saturday. Before 1914 the Shows couldn't have been confined to a village hall - hadBentley possessed one before 1923 - for they required considerable outdoorspace. This for several years was provided on the High Field (where from thelate 1940s the Highfields Estate was built). In 1913 the judging of fruit, flowers, vegetables, needlework & cooked dishesproceeded in a marquee. But outside it went on a kind of sports day, involving,it seemed, every part of Bentley's population. Activities included the women'segg & spoon race, the boys' obstacle race, the mile walking race, guessing theweight of a pair of geese or the number of sweets in a jar. 72 BentleySchoolchildren entered various classes, many excelling in basket-making. 24babies over & under 18 months of age even took part in a baby show.Pre-1914 Shows received bigger, more detailed press coverage than recentones and in a publication with a bigger circulation. In 1913 the weekly "SuffolkMercury" devoted 20 column inches to the Bentley Show. In 2016, by contrast, the report on the Horticultural Show and the names of the 14 cup & shieldwinners occupied 23 lines in the bi-monthly "Bentley Bugle".Before 1914 when agriculture was depressed, the influential minority of thechief employers & landlords in Bentley were not involved with the FlowerShows for the same reasons as the majority. The former hoped to reduceBentley's population outflow (of 8% to 417 between 1901 & 21) & hostilitytowards themselves. Quite differently the majority including many agriculturallabourers grew - out of economic necessity - vegetables & sometimes fruit intheir often large gardens. Entering good specimens in a Show was a small, further step.In more prosperous 2016 the many who are homeowners and employed (orwere before retirement) in jobs outside the Village grew - as a hobby -vegetables, fruit & probably more flowers than their pre - 1914 predecessors. In March & July 1914 the Flower Show Committee, chaired by the Vicar, theRev. J. Michael Jones, met to make arrangements for the year's Show. However, at 11.00pm, on the 4th August, the first morning of the School'sHarvest Holidays, Britain found itself "in a state of war" with Germany. The nextFlower Show didn't take place for another five years on 12th September, 1919..John Tombs - Village Historian

BENTLEY W.I.

It was with sadness that members heard of the death of Gill Swain who hadbeen a member of WI for over 40 years. Gill served on the committee onseveral occasions, as assistant secretary and press officer. We remember shewas a talented flower arranger and also good with words being able to comeup with a verse or limerick when required. We send our sympathy to Janet andfamily.

BENTLEY COMRADES

In June we had a session of films to fill the evening. The first ofthese was in the series Above and Beyond and recounted theexperiences of a number of British Army personnel in NorthernIreland dealing with riots and unexploded bombs etc. Thesecond film commemorated the anniversary of the D Day

invasion. Entitled D Day in Colour, the film described the events leading up tothe operation, the landing and the aftermath. Finally we had another episodeof ‘Allo, ‘Allo – Renee under an Assumed Nose. Further arrangements weremade for the proposed visit to Orford Ness in October. In July we had more films of a military nature to entertain members. First upwas an episode of Chris Barrie’s Massive Machines, a light hearted history ofSubmarines from their first inception through to the modern nuclear vessels oftoday. Next on the programme was an episode of Most Daring Raids, tellingthe story of the Royal Air Force bombing raid on Stanley airfield during theArgentine invasion and occupation of the Falkland Islands in 1982. To end theevening the next episode of ‘Allo, ‘Allo – The Confusion of the Generals wasshown. During the evening more details of the Orford Ness visit were agreedBentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interestedin the British Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of eachmonth in the Village Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments andeach make a contribution towards the hire of the hall. CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE – PRACTICE UPDATE JULY 2017

Patient ConfidentialityThe practice takes patient confidentiality very seriously but our staff are often facedwith situations where they are asked to compromise this confidentiality. I thought itwould be useful to remind patients of a few guidelines.Unless it is clearly in the patient’s best interest to do otherwise, we can only discusspatient information with someone other than the patient themselves if we havewritten consent from the patient. Even the fact that a patient has an appointment atthe practice is confidential, as they may not wish family or friends to know. Wetherefore cannot confirm that a patient has an appointment, discuss their medicationor any other aspect of their care without their permission. It is acceptable for a patientto give verbal consent on the phone, and then pass the phone to a friend or relativeto discuss their problem. It is also acceptable for someone to book an appointmentfor a patient, or cancel it, as this does not require us to divulge any information. Two specific problem situations are often encountered. First, elderly or disabledpatients may have difficulty in communicating or lack mobility and need someone toact on their behalf. A letter of consent enabling practice staff to discuss issues ontheir behalf really helps. The letter could specify, for example, that just appointmentsand medication should be discussed, rather than specific details about conditions. The other situation is parents discussing their children’s records. This is not astraightforward area. When parents are separated or divorced they may still haveparental responsibility and so be entitled to fully discuss their child’s health. Forchildren under 16, parents do not have an automatic right to access their child’srecord and discuss their medical issues. Here, “Gillick competency” applies. LordScarman, in his judgment of the Gillick case in the House of Lords (Gillick v WestNorfolk, 1985) commented generally on parents’ versus children’s rights as follows:"parental right yields to the child’s right to make his own decisions when he reachesa sufficient understanding and intelligence to be capable of making up his own mindon the matter requiring decision."This means that we may decline to share children’s medical information with theirparents if the it is judged by a practice healthcare professional that it is not in theirbest interest to do so.Training DaysJust a reminder that in 2017 the practice will be closed from 1.00pm on the followingdates for staff training:7th Sept (Thurs)4th October (Wednesday)On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions arepicked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will askyou to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day.Pete KeeblePractice Manager
