Editor’s/Plates Notes

Sad to pass on the passing of Kirsten Muir, Kirsten was taken with cancer, way too young. On behalf of the club may I pass on the condolences of all club members, we did not see Kirsten often. She was a bright light, very friendly and fitted in perfectly. I clearly with fondness remember Kirsten taking charge of a Christmas Light Run, after John got us lost on the first lights on the tour, using her phone GPS to work out the best route. It was one of the best Christmas Light Runs.

Registration is over for another 12 months, and I would like to thank everyone, all the members, their

spouses, the scrutineers, the secretary all do a fantastic job on registration day. We really do have a fantastic club, easy going, friendly and always willing to help. Thanks again one and all.

During this Covid 19 times we have so far managed to have a couple of runs and still comply with Social

Distancing. Our meetings are obviously down on numbers, which in some ways is good. It makes it very easy to comply with Covid restriction. Let’s just hope that things start to improve and we can all get out and about in our cars.

My own cars have really gone nowhere since last rego day. I bought the ’24 Dodge home on last year’s rego

day and replaced the RH rear axle with a brand new one. All the cars stayed out overnight until I could fix the ones that had minor faults, next day adjusted wheel bearings on Bedford and put away. Viva, sprite, Alfa, & Daimler were put away having no faults. Volvo left out to check & adjust inner tie rod. Also put a new timing belt on the car, haven’t been happy with the valve timing since purchasing the car. Going completely through the timing setup, first by ensuring TDC on the pulley was actually TDC. Then setting up cam in position to find the drive gear for the distributor was nowhere near the cover marks. The rotor button did not line up with No. 1 on the cap, about 10 degrees out. After some fiddling I managed to get the drive gear in such a position that the rotor button pointed to No. 1. Different car after that, used to stall if the air con was turned on, never idled up with the air con as it should. Performance is now smooth, idles correctly and has enough power now that it will pull up hills two gears higher. Fitzgerald Mount used to be a second gear hill, pulled up there in fourth gear going over top at 40 kph. Joke A woman ran a red traffic light and crashed into a man's car. Both of their cars are demolished, but amazingly neither of them was hurt. After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said; "Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace for the rest of our days.” The man replied, "I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God! The woman continued, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of 75 year old scotch didn't break. Surely God meant for us to drink this vintage delicacy and celebrate our good fortune." Then she handed the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement, opened it, drank half the bottle and then handed it back to the woman. The woman took the bottle, immediately put the cap back on, and handed it back to the man. The man asks, "Aren't you having any?" She replies, "Nah. I think I'll just wait for the police." Some years ago Adam ate the apple. Men will never learn! Submitted by Ray Heilman

Andre-Gustave Citroen Photographic portrait of André Citroën

André-Gustave Citroën (November 2, 1878 - July 3, 1935) was a French Jewish entrepreneur of Dutch and Polish descent. He is remembered chiefly for the make of car named after him, but also for his invention of double helical gears. During World War I, he became the sole producer of certain vital components for munitions manufacture for the French army due to the mass production capacity of his factory. Despite his acknowledged contribution to popularizing the automobile and as the pioneer of its mass production in Europe, he was never an enthusiast of the automobile as such. He was, however, interested in developing engineering processes that would make mass production possible so that non-elite could also afford to buy cars. After increasing the productivity of the Mors automobile company, he later converted his war-time munitions factory for automobile manufacturing and the first Citroën rolled off the assembly line in 1919. His company went bankrupt during the Great Depression and although it survived, he lost control. In addition to pioneering mass production and the concept of after-sale service, he also contributed significantly to improving employee working conditions and benefits.

Life André-Gustave was the fifth and last child of the Dutch Jewish diamond merchant, Levie Citroen, and Mazra Kleinmann (of Warsaw, Poland). He was related to the famous British philosopher A.J. Ayer. The Citroen family moved to Paris from Amsterdam in 1873. Upon arrival, the diaeresis was added to the name, changing Citroen (Dutch for Lemon) to Citroën. His father committed suicide when Citroen was only six years old. Education Citroën attended the lycee Louise le Grande, graduating in 1894, with the highest grades. This gained him admission to the prestigious École Polytechnique Paris. He graduated in 1898, but his academic performance had suffered from his mother’s death and his results were unimpressive. This circumscribed his job possibilities since companies recruited those students in the top percentile, so he joined the army as an engineering officer. This, however, gave him practical experience and he quickly matured as an engineer. While on leave, he visited family members in Poland, where wooden gears used to drive cotton mills caught his attention. Realizing that steel gears would improve efficiency, he started to work on this concept and also obtained a patent for a steel gear designed by a Russian company. In 1904, with several friends, he set up his own factory to produce double-helical gearwheels. Citroën studied the wooden gear drives in the thriving cotton mills and when he had finished his leave and returned to duty in Paris, he secured the patent rights to a steel herring-bone type gear invented by a now anonymous Russian. In 1904, he and two friends set up a small workshop to produce his own pattern of double-helical gearwheels. Hinstin, Frères, Citroën et Cie prospered and very soon, Citroën was a recognized name in French engineering. To speed production, he began to refine the manufacturing process, introducing flow controls and using the latest machinery. His methods not only involved engineering techniques and production control, but maintaining good worker relations. For example, he was in favor of worker benefits and later pioneered maternity leave for his women workers. He established dental and medical facilities, built a worker’s gymnasium and provided a crèche. His gears were in great demand, and buyers included ship builders as well as automobile manufacturers, such as the Mors firm, whose care were having success on the racing circuit; his brother was married to the daughter of the company Chairman. Several important contracts from Mors resulted in Citroën’s own company building engines on their behalf. By 1910, the company’s annual turnover was a million francs.

Relationship with the Mors Company In 1908, Citroën took leave from his own company to assist the Mors to increase their production, because sales were falling. Their cars were large and expensive. By applying his production techniques, he increased the Mors' production from 125 cars to 1,200 cars per year. His own company continued to expand and went public in 1913. World War I Citroën was still a Captain in the Army Reserves and as the world war broke out, he returned to active service, this time in the artillery. His engineering ability soon proved useful when he turned his attention to solving the ammunition shortage, of which he quickly became aware when his own unit was unable to return fire for lack of shells. He devised a scheme for applying his mass production processes to shell manufacture, which he presented to the General in charge of Artillery, who immediately commissioned him to implement the plan. The army provided land and funding. Production of shells reached 55,000 per day. After this success, he was given the responsibility of organizing the supplying of all French munitions plants with raw materials. Most of the workers were women, known as munitionettes, and it was at this period that Citroën pioneered maternity support for workers. The Citroën automobile company With the end of the war, Citroën needed to switch the factory to peace time production, as he was anxious to continue using the already "fully equipped precision manufacturing plant."[2] His earlier experience with the Mors firm, and a chance meeting with Henry Ford suggested that automobile production was an attractive venture, so in 1919, he founded the Citroën automobile company in by converting his existing munitions factory. His aim was to mass-produce a small, inexpensive automobile. His industrialist and entrepreneurial qualities in the automotive industry have likened him to a European Henry Ford, whom he certainly admired. He also used mass publicity to promote his products, once having his name and logo illuminated on the Eiffel Tower. New Citroën factories were constructed, and his firm became one of the largest auto-manufacturing companies in France. He did not design the bodies but contracted with the American engineer, Edward G. Budd. In 1928, their collaboration resulted in the first all-steel car body. Refusing to retrench during the Great Depression, Citroën introduced the only popular front-wheel-drive car of its time, the Traction Avant (1934). 1934 Traction Avant 11CV - front wheel drive with independent suspension

Unfortunately, because the Avant proved to be very popular, Citroën went bankrupt in 1934, and was "legally required to retire." Control went to the Michelin Corporation, the largest creditor. While the Great Depression was a major cause of the company’s financial problems, Citroën, known as a "flashy dresser" also had a gambling addiction which was also a major factor. A Time article at the time described him as "the flashy little Jew whom everyone calls the Ford of France"—language

that would subsequently become unacceptable. The article also mentions that he threatened to commit suicide rather than lose control of the company he had founded. His lavish life-style made him the subject of gossip columns. According to Valpato, Citroën's constant replacement of machines—he was convinced that newer machines were more efficient—also placed a financial strain on the company. Family Citroën married married Giorgina Bingen and they had four children; Jacqueline—born in 1915, Bernard—born in 1917, Maxime—born in 1919, and Solange—born in 1925. Other interests Citroën financed various scientific expeditions, including one that travelled 8,000 miles (13,000 km) by car, from Beirut to Peking (1931–32) following the Silk Road and the 1922 cross-Sahara expedition to Timbuktu. The lighting of the Arc de Triomphe and of the Place de la Concorde were gifts from Citroën to the city of Paris. Never a car enthusiast as such, he actually disliked driving "on the open road."[8] Citroën also established a toy factory manufacturing miniature cars, giving his own children an electronically powered toy. Death He died in Paris, France, of stomach cancer in 1935, and was interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse in Paris.

Legacy The Citroen 2cv (deux cheaveaux or two horses) people's car.

In 1992, the Parc André Citroën public garden in Paris was named after him. In 1998, he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan. Continued popularity of the Citroën car, especially as a people’s car, represents an enduring legacy. The 2CV (1948) was, like the Volkswagen, designed to be a people’s car and to put the whole country on the road. In the 1970s it acquired icon status among the upwardly mobile. Possession became something of an anti-snob symbol. His concern for employee benefits also contributed to improvement in working conditions for industrial workers generally, and is said to have inspired the food-card system that was introduced as part of post-war reconstruction. Owen (1975) says that "his bankruptcy and early death in 1935 took him away from the company he had built at a crucial stage in its development—yet

his ideas, attitudes and influences have lived on through successive takeovers and mergers in such an extraordinary way that even now Citroën cars owe far more to him than those of most other firms have inherited from their original creators."[10] In particular, Citroën started the tradition of innovation in solving engineering problems that continued to make many Citroën products unique in certain features within the automobile world. He also saw selling cars in terms of selling "a service," and pioneered warranties and after-sale service. Citroën's concern for labour welfare suggests that while he was certainly interested in making money, he did not regard the industry of manufacturing as solely about owner profit but saw the process as a type of cooperation between owners and labour, from which the latter would also benefit.

Strawberry, basil and goat's cheese focaccia Difficulty: not too difficult Cooking time: more than 2 hours Serves : serves 6 Ingredients 1½ cups lukewarm water 2 tsp dry yeast 2 tsp dry yeast 4 tbsp olive oil 2 cups wholemeal plain flour 1⅔ cups bread flour (high protein), plus a little extra for kneading 1½ tsp salt 10 Queensland strawberries, hulled and halved Basil, handful leaves, shredded 100g fresh goat's cheese Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper to taste Method Pour the water into a large bowl, add the yeast and sugar stirring to dissolve. Add the olive oil followed by the flours and salt then mix with your hands to form a dough. Turn dough onto a floured work surface and knead until the dough is elastic and smooth (adding a little flour as necessary to prevent sticking). Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook; mix on medium-low for 8 minutes until the dough forms around the hook . Turn out onto a lightly floured surface, shape into a ball. Lightly oil a large clean bowl and add the dough ball. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot for 1½ to 2 hours, until doubled in size. Punch down the dough. Cover again and rest for a further 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Grease a baking tray with olive oil and line with baking paper. Shape the dough into a rectangle or oval pressing out until about 2 cm thick. Cover with a slightly damp towel and let rest for 30 minutes. Just before baking, dimple the dough all over with your fingertips. Gently press the strawberries into the dough and dot over grape-sized pieces of goat's cheese. Sprinkle with coarse salt, pepper and the basil. Drizzle all over with olive oil (1-2 tablespoons). Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the bread is golden brown. Rest for 10 minutes before eating or cool completely. Joke

Open Day 26th July

Rain, Rain and more rain and even more rain all day. Very quiet in the morning gave me some time to do some cleaning up. Catalogued and recorded all the fan belts that Kilby’s kindly donated to the club, Cleaned the top of the trophy showcase, and generally tidied up the bar area, fixed one cistern that wasn’t filling plus a few other small jobs. Kathy arrived and we chatted for not long before John arrived followed by Peter. Maurice and then Ian. We sat in the warmth of the old bar and chatted away the day. We had 4 visitors in the afternoon, a Queenslander who used to catch the train from Hay to Sydney as a child. A Watmore and his wife that used to work at the station learnt a few things about the station from him. He worked at the station between 1980 and 1983. Chatted for quite some time to Mr Watmore. Finally a visit from Jack Mallon and he stayed and chatted right up to closing. Interesting day, lots of different conversations about everything and anything from masks to rego day. It was due to the rain a very relaxing day. Russell Denning Renault 4CV John Mooney Modern Peter Hollier Modern motorcycle Maurice Randell Modern Ian Reid Modern Kathy Denning modern

THE story of Australian bushranging divides itself naturally into three periods — that of the runaway convicts whom the terrors of the “System” drove to seek escape from its cruelties in the bush; that which had its beginnings about the time of the gold discoveries, when the bushrangers were generally free men of an adventurous and lawless type who were tempted into crime by rich and poorly protected convoys of gold; and that which was concerned almost entirely with the exploits of Ned Kelly and his companions. The earliest bushrangers were prisoners of the Crown who had escaped from assigned service, or from the iron-gangs employed in

road-making and other public works, and had taken to the bush in order to avoid recapture. THERE was little in the forest-clad wilds upon which they might support life, so they were compelled to resort to robbery as their only means of existence. In his report to the House of Commons in 1822, Mr Commissioner Bigge, sent out to inquire into the public affairs of New South Wales, defined bushranging as “absconding in the woods, and living upon plunder and the robbery of orchards,” and that may still stand as a fairly apt description of the pioneers of the profession. Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), being the gaol of twice-convicted and extra-refractory convicts, produced the earliest and most violent bushrangers, but they had at least one forerunner in New South Wales — the subject of this article — who made a name for himself in the very beginning of white settlement on Port Jackson, during the administration of the first Governor of the Territory, Captain Arthur Phillip, R.N. It was not, however, until about the eighteen-twenties that bushranging on the mainland assumed anything like the proportions it had reached in the southern island in the first years of the nineteenth century. There it had its beginnings almost at the very start of settlement, and it was close upon half a century before the country ceased to be terrorised by more or less bloodthirsty gangs of freebooters, the scourge alike of settlers and aborigines. The earlier bushrangers in New South Wales were rather loafers and “lead-swingers” than confirmed criminals. They usually sought a chance of slipping into the scrub whenever the vigilance of the sentries guarding them might be relaxed, and the wild nature of the country made it easy for them to getaway. It seems almost unbelievable, but is nevertheless true, that large numbers of them fled into the Blue Mountains, or along the coastal strip northward, with a hope of reaching the Dutch East Indies, India, or China. Very few of them could read or write, and had only the most fantastic ideas relating to geography. It has never been even vaguely computed how many of them perished in the mountain gorges or the coastal scrubs in making these desperate bids for liberty, but the number must have been very great. The majority of them, however, only hoped to live free lives in the bush. A few joined the blacks and remained with them for years, whilst others merely wandered aimlessly about until hunger hunted them back to inevitable punishment and renewed penal slavery. Many remained at large until recaptured, subsisting by robbing settlers. When a man became “fed up” with bushranging, he gave himself up and was flogged. A second offence entailed twelve months in an iron-gang. Subsequent absconding’s involved transportation, if re-taken, to the Coal River (Newcastle) or to Van Diemen’s Land.

Registration Day 16th August

The club's Covid 19 precautions went very well, much better than the Plates Registrar anticipated. Not a lot of cars at one time and it ran very smoothly.

Huge thanks to the scrutineers who as always did a fantastic job. Thanks to the members for presenting their cars in such faultless condition.

Thanks to the secretary for looking after the paperwork and help make it all work. It was great to catch up with our long term ACT members, who called in to pick up their caravan delivered

from Bathurst by a Bathurst Member. All over by noon, it was a hassle free great day.

Joke Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?'
