Let’s See What Was Happening in June of 1978
In the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave
Article 1: by Joe Malone
What Of The American Home? Home— what a lovely word! What fond memories are
stimulated for all who are blessed with a proper one. In fact, a Christ-centered home is a
foretaste of heaven. As Edgar Guest has said, “It takes a heap of livin’ in a house to make it
home.” The best thing that we can spend on our children is our time.
An old Chinese proverb put it well: “If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be
beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the
home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation.” And, brethren,
as goes the home, so goes the church!
America is in the process of destroying the home! Many years ago, before the situation
became so acute and before our tragic trend became so obvious, Luther Burbank, the great
American naturalist, said, “If we paid no more attention to our plants than we have to our
children, we would now be living in a jungle of weeds.” Today, in America, we live in a
jungle of people. The law of the jungle — the gratification of selfish, sensual desire as the
top priority — is in evidence on every hand. Thus, divorce, adultery, rape, incest, child
abuse, robbery, theft, misappropriation of funds, — even in high places, shoplifting, drug
addiction and murder are commonplace! Folks! This was written in 1978 !
As regards the church, there are two basic causes for the decline of the home, in the
judgment of this writer. First, the proneness on the part of some to minimize the grievous
of nature of divorce and thus to contribute to the acceleration of that evil. Some are now
contending the guilty party, when a marriage is terminated for adultery, the only scriptural
grounds other than physical death (Matthew 19:9), can also remarry with heaven’s
sanction. This is certain to multiply the tragedy of broken homes. The second cause is both
parents seeking careers outside the home. Economic necessity might demand that for
awhile on certain occasions , but God has said that young women are to be “keepers at
home” (Titus 2:4,5) Faith comes by hearing God’s Word (Romans 10:17) and Christians
walk by it (2 Corinthians 5:7). Precious children are the innocent victims when a contrary
course is pursued. The writer here emphasizes again and again. Women with children are
foolish to work when the don’t have to. It is important that a mother be home when her
children get home.” Next week another article from June 1978
The Cracked Acorn
Underdogs June 11, 2017 c.r. van arsdall
Hebrews 12:1 - So then, encircled as we are with such a cloud of witnesses all about us, let us get rid of every impediment and our besetting sin, and let us run the course mapped out for us.
We love 'em, the underdogs. Nothing gets to you more than when the little runt from nowhere comes crashing through the line to make the needed touchdown. We identify with the person who has hung in there despite all the contrary winds that defeat many mortals and brings home the bacon.
I am not a sports person but glance at all the sections of the newspaper, trying to get my 35 cents worth. When I saw Hilary Lunke, 24, who for 21 months had always finished close to 15th place on the women's professional golf tour, to see the picture of her blubbering over the huge silver trophy -becoming the U.S. Women's Open Champion, I nearly lost it. I am the image of one who never did well at any athletic event, never got a trophy for anything - I did want one!!
But stunned, she said, "I can't believe this. What did I do?" She didn't mention that practice and hard work had brought her from nearly last place. And that she had stayed out there in all kinds of weather, hitting the ball over and over. I would guess that also there was a little faith that she would eventually succeed.
Jesus has told us to have faith and it will move mountains and that faith may start out as small as a mustard seed. That our faith can produce amazing results. We are cautioned to avoid entanglement with the world, to keep striving along to our goal. We may become exhausted and tempted to turn away to other seemingly rewarding pursuits. Take comfort in Matthew 11:25 -Come to me all who labor and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest; GREAT SONGS OF THE CHURCH -
JESUS Paid It All
And when before the throne I stand in Him complete,
I'll lay my trophies down, all down at Jesus' feet.
Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe.
Sin has left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.
Our Prayer: Father, may the church have many come from the waters of baptism holding the trophy of salvation, and let us happily weep with them for the hope that has been freely give to all who have become children of Thine. AMEN.

1 Peter 2.4-6 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame
Much is being said about monuments. Recently, many have been removed. It is a pity as each one carries with it deep meaning to many people.
The Bible also says much about monuments. In fact they are all over the pages of God’s holy text, the bible. Moses, Abraham and even Samuel erected monuments as did may others in both the old and the New Testaments.
One such monument from the Old Testament we still sing about today. It is the 2nd verse of the old familiar hymn O Thou Fount of Every Blessing, written by Robert Robinson in 1758. The phrase, Here I raise my Ebenezer, recounts the great stone Samuel raised up to remind all how God delivered Israel from danger.
The monument builders of the day seldom wrote or carved on them. They were place in a prominent place so when seen they would ask why it was there and the locals would recount the story, and thus God would be magnified each time the story is told and God is remembered.
By the way Ebenezer [or stone of help], can be read about in 1 Samuel 7:10 and give God the Glory.
Legacies are extremely important.
“In law, a legacy is something acquired
by inheritance, or by a Will (law).
In historical terms, a legacy is something
that is handed down from one period of
time to another period of time. Historical
legacy can be counted in later times as a
good thing or a bad thing. From Wikipedia.
Fathers give their children legacies to
help them to value the important,
respect the present & guide the future.
