Korean independence movement history.
A total of 90,000 pieces of relics are displayed and
preserved. Especially, the seven exhibition halls
with the state-of-the-art display technology offer
experiential and dynamic displays.

collections of sacred writings
of Korea, and visits to different

Education that is held for

Saturday when they do not have

held with the 1,919 applicants recruited through
the ‘I’m an independence movement patriot’ on
the Internet

• ‘Independence Day Memorial Gathering’ where
you can experience the patriotic independence
spirit and the joy of independence
• ‘Autumn cultural gathering’ with the beautiful
autumn view of the Independence Hall of Korea
• Cultural events of martyr·patriotism memorial
days of the great independence patriots, etc.
Symbol
It is a design that highlights its
symbol as a place established
through the donation of citizens
in order to instill the sovereign
national spirit.
It visualizes the image of althea
which symbolizes the Korea
and the torch which symbolizes
perpetual independence. It
also symbolizes harmony
and prosperity of Korea by
emphasizing the gathering
& expansion image with the
structure of gathering upwards
to a virtual point and the
structure of gradually changing
from the center.

Korea holds Taegeuk, the symbol
of unification, as its motif. By
applying a dynamic structure
and based on the national spirit
and livelihood, it shows the
future Korea as a nation that
leads Northeastern Asia.

colors that symbolize the
provision of space and the
national spirit. It also expresses
the national passion, patriotism,
creativity, life, cultural elegance
and pride.

Geoni, Goni, Ee-i, and Gami

‘Geongonigam’ of the four lines
in the Korean national flag, are
friends that support Haneoli.
They symbolize the liveliness
of spring, passion of summer,
calmness of autumn and purity
of winter respectively.

hold the beauty of Korea’s four

After the Paleolith culture in the Korean peninsula 500,000 years ago, Korea
developed its independent culture through its various histories through the
Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Despite various foreign invasions, it wisely
overcame the national crisis and experienced beautiful cultural blossoms.
This exhibition hall displays artifacts and data related to the efforts to overcome
national crisis, impregnable spirit, traditional culture and roots of the nation from
the prehistoric age to the late Joseon Dynasty in 1860. Since May, 2010, it has
offered new features such as 3D models and the latest display techniques.

The 2nd exhibition Hall, ‘Natioanl Crisis by Japanese Imperialism,’ covers the
period from the 1860’s to the 1940’s which is from the Korea’s first step towards
modernization to the Japanese colonization period. After the flow of changes in the
modernization period and the revolutionary period to become a sovereign nation,
Korea’s long history was interrupted by the Japanese invasion. You can view the
struggles of the loss of national sovereignty. You can also see the distortion of the
history of neighboring nations that still exist today.

old Japanese government
constructed the prison to block
Koreans from conducting

The 3rd exhibition hall, ‘Struggles for National Rights,’ covers the National
Sovereignty Restoration Movement which is represented by the Uibyeong
(righteous army) Movement and the Enlightenment Movement. You can view the
beginning, middle and last period of the Uibyeong Movement which occurred
around the nation by the Korean nobleman scholars. You can also view the
movements of patriots and martyrs like the Great Martyr Ahn Jungguen who
sacrificed themselves and punished the traitors and invaders.

March 1st Independence Movement. You can view the background, development
phases and the domestic and foreign effect of the March 1st Independence
Movement which was a result of maturity in the anti-Japanese resistance during

activities in the Manjuria region, just resistance which executed major figures of
the Japanese institutions, and the activities of Joseon Uiyongdae and the Korean
National Independence Army.

protection movement, people’s independence movement and the activities of the
Korean Provisional Government.
You can view the establishment features and activities of the Korean Provisional
Government which was the pivotal institution for national movements regarding
the protection of the Korean language and national education where various
people such as students, women, laborers and farmers participated in order to
stand up against Japan’s policy to eradicate the Korean culture.

covers various anti-Japanese independence movements which occurred in
and outside Korea. Visitors can become independence activists, cry out for
independence, act as a member of the Korean Provisional Government, and

It is unique since you can see that Korea obtained independence with the effort

1 TheGrandHalloftheNation
It is the symbol of the Independence Hall of Korea and
the building that plays the role as the center memorial
hall. As the size of a soccer field with 126m in length,
68m in width, and 15 stories high with 45m in height
it is the largest tile building in the oriental region. It is
a building with a doubled roof designed to resemble
Sudeoksa (temple) and Daeungjeon during the Goryeo
dynasty. It is larger than Tiananmen in Beijing, China.
2 MonumenttotheNation
The monument to the nation which expresses the soar of
the nation resembles the wings of a bird flying up in the
sky and the hands folded to make a prayer. It expresses
the perpetual spirit of the nation in the past, present and
future. It also holds the will towards sovereignty and
independence of the nation. There is a sculpture carving
of the althea and Taegeukgi on the front and back. There
are mosaic pieces that symbolizes the four faithfuls,
Cheongryeong, Baekho, Jujak and Hyeonmu, on the four
sides in the monument. It is a large structure that is
51m high.
3 TheStatueofIndomitableKoreans
It is located in the center inside the Grand Hall of
the Nation. As a symbolic structure that invigorates
patriotism, it expresses the independence spirit and
strong will of Korea. It is composed of 274 granite stones
that weigh 3~4 tons each. Its posture expresses the
undying spirit for sovereignty, independence, peace and
prosperity of Koreans who received the energy from Mt.
Baekdu. The lake of Mt. Baekdu is engraved in the center
at the back.
4 HillofReunification-
Placefortheparticipationofcitizens
It is a hill that was established to concentrate the will of
citizens for reunification, and maintain it until the actual
reunification. The hill of reunification was established in
the Independence Hall of Korea to clarify the national will
and passion for complete independence, and to deliver
them to our descendants. The reunification monument,
which is 17.1m in height and 25.5m in perpendicular
radius and has a feature of 3 cones converging into one
and resembles a rainbow, is located on the hill. There is
also the bell for reunification which weighs 9 tons.
The Independence Hall of Korea
is carrying out a campaign of
brick piling for reunification. Any
Korean citizens are welcome to
participate. Donation amounts
vary from 5,000 won to 30,000
won according to the size of the

5 PatriotsMemorial
It is a place in the memory of the sacred spirits of our
patriots, and the everlasting prosperity of the nation.
Located on the uppermost area, the walls of 105m in
length and 3~7m in height surround the nearby areas. In
the center, there is a stone altar and a fountain. On each
end of the wall, there is a beacon mound.
6 ExhibitionofJapaneseGovernment-
GeneralBuildingRemains
As a purpose to clear the Japanese remains and recover
the national spirit, it was removed on Aug. 15, 1995
during the 50th anniversary of independence. It was
then established on Aug. 11, 1998 as a lesson of disgrace
in history.
8 MonumentsofAnalects
There are wise sayings of famous figures regarding
independence and patriotism. The words engraved in
the stones hold the thoughts of our national heroes who
cared and loved our nation. There are 98 major analects
of Jeong Yakyong, General Lee Sunshin, Choi Ikhyeon,
Shin Chaeho, Kim Gu, Martyr Ahn Junggeun, former
President Lee Seungman, etc.
9 TheMillenniumForest
Holding the wishes for reunification and national
harmony, it is a place that was completed in the Arbor
day of year 2000, the first year of the new millennium.
It is also a place emphasizing the importance of trees
and forests that protect our environment. In the land site
resembling the Korean peninsula, about 10,000 trees of
36 types that represent cities and provinces are planted.
Thanks to its vast area, there are many places to go such
as the Peace Plaza, Baekdudaegangil (road), Our Wild
Flowers Garden, observatory, etc.

1 BalgeunnuriHall
Balgeunnuri Hall, which holds the meaning of light that
shone on the road to freedom & independence and on
the world of harmony, was established under the theme
of ‘Structure built with light’.
All the areas are made in unique and creative designs
that receive sufficient sunlight. Its area is 1,426.79m2,
and consists of auditorium, classroom, experience hall,
conference room, simultaneous interpretation room,
resting room, etc.
2 TheIndependenceArmyExperienceSchool
It is a history experience education facility that resembles
the Shinheungmugwan School which was the first
independence movement base. Its area is 433m2, and it
consists of experience hall, convenient facility, and two
education halls, where lectures, discussions, and other
programs are conducted.
3 Relicsstorage
It has three storages that can store various exhibition
data and research data. (1,123.7m2) Constant
temperature·humidity systems are installed inside for
the perfect preservation of the data.

4 Library
An estimated 71,000 books, including Japanese and
Chinese books about historical distortions and anti-
Japanese movements, are kept in the library. Especially,
the Korean Independence Movement History information
system is available so that users can readily access the
necessary information. All visitors can use the reading
room which is a place to search information and access
audio-visual data.

5 SeogokCampingSite
It is an eco-friendly camping site in a vast area of
72,237m2. It has drinking water facilities, shower rooms
and restroom. There are sports facilities where visitors
can play volleyball, baseball, etc.

6 PineGroveRestArea
Its area is 9,600m2 and can accommodate about 1,000
people. It was established for events such as picnic
parties and field trips of large organizations or in
family groups. Visitors can do activities such as soccer,
volleyball, basketball, Korean traditional wrestling, etc.
There are also drinking water facilities, shower rooms,
and restroom. It is open to the public from March to
November.

7 HaneoliTrain
When visitors take the Haneoli train that circles within
the Independence Hall of Korea, they can enjoy the
monuments of analects, beautiful garden scenery
with unique trees, and sculptures on their way to the
front of the Grand Hall of the Nation. Visitors can ride at
the main entrance.

8 WhiteLotusPond
The White Lotus Pond, which is decorated with fabulous
lotus leaves, is a pond with the water that flowed in
from the peak of Mt. Heukseong. It is a great resting
place where visitors can relax under the shades of the
trees next to the pond which gives tranquility from the
harmony between the pond and living rocks.
9 MapleTreeForestRoad
The Maple Tree Forest Road that surrounds the
Independence Hall of Korea with a length of 3.7km is an
indispensable autumn scenery of the Independence Hall
of Korea.
The Pine Grove Rest Area is
widely used as a place for picnic
parties since visitors can freely
use the vast grass area.
You would feel refreshed as
soon as you reach the large
pond. There is a deck on one
side of the pond where you can
relax for a while and enjoy the
surrounding scenery.

In Yongduri, Byeongcheonmyeon,
Cheonan, there is the house of patriot
Yu Gwansun which was registered
as the historical relic No. 230. The
thatched cottage main building and the annex were
restored on Dec. 30, 1991. Next to it, there is Church
Maebong where Patriot Yu attended, and her memorial
monument.

PatriotLeeDongnyeong’s
MemorialHall
Independent activist Lee Dongnyeong
was exiled to Yongjeongchon,
Manchuria, China after the Eulsa treaty.
After coming back to Korea in 1907, Sir Lee organized
a secret organization called Shinminhwe with Ahn
Changho, Kim Gu, etc. In 1910, patriot Lee established
Shinheung Mugwan School in Manju. Later, he became
the head of the Korean Provision Government in 1927,
after serving as the chairperson of the Shanghai Korean
Provisional Government’s legislative body, and as the
secretary of domestic affairs.
