The Mayhew Animal Home is one of London’s busiest animal welfare charities; with over 150 stray and abandoned cats, dogs and rabbits in our care at any one time. We strive to find loving, new homes for all our residents as no healthy animal in our care is ever put to sleep, but it can take some time. That is why we would like you to help by sponsoring our animal units for the duration of their stay with us.

Our animals are kept in the best possible environment to make their stay as stress-free as possible. We are extremely proud of our facilities as they are especially designed with the needs of each type of animal in mind.

We not only provide a high standard of care for every resident, but also provide environmental enrichment, with every single animal in our care having a range of toys, regular socialisation, mental stimulation and plenty of exercise.

Our animals come from a wide variety of backgrounds – but the one thing they all have in common is an overwhelming need to feel safe and secure. Our facilities deliver this for every single animal in our care, helping to relieve their feelings of loss and abandonment.

Our animals are at the heart Of everything we dO.

“ We chose to show our support of The Mayhew in part through sponsoring an animal unit and are now on our second – we especially love the bi-annual update with a photo of the unit’s current resident: you really feel a connection to it and that you’re directly helping that animal (and many more) at such an important time in their lives. It’s a wonderful feeling that lasts throughout the entire year.”

the mayhew dOg rOOms Our dog rooms are literally rooms rather than the image of ‘kennels’ which immediately springs to mind – our dogs are securely enclosed by four walls, with a comfortable bed and lots of toys, unable to get stressed and frustrated by seeing their neighbours and passers by. If you walk into our dog area – there is peace – as the dogs are generally sleeping or playing with their toys, which illustrates just how relaxed they are. To aid the mental and physical state of our dogs – they all get four walks a day plus extra socialisation time. Some rescue centres can’t even promise that their dogs get one walk per day.

The vast majority of the dogs that arrive with us have no behavioural problems when they walk through our door, they have just been let down by their previous owners. The main purpose of our facilities is to prevent our dogs from developing any unwanted behaviours during their stay with us. Our success in this area is second to none which is testament to our caring staff, volunteers and first class facilities.

Please help us to continue to provide our outstanding dog facilities by sponsoring a dog room for just £12 a month.

lOla’s stOryHello – I never thought that I would live anywhere else than with the people I had always known, but one evening I was woken up for a very late night walk and I thought maybe we were going for some exciting games as my owner brought my toys and bed along. We came to a quiet street and they put my bed down and told me to get in and left me with my toys on my own. They shouted at me not to follow and I was so scared I stayed in that bed in the dark and cold for what seemed like hours. Then a friendly face found me and said I had been left at The Mayhew Animal Home but I was safe and not to worry anymore. They gave me a room of my own with a new bed and lots of new toys and

lovely people came to take me for walks and play with me. One day some new people came to visit me in my room and said they would love me forever and I went to live with them. Because of The Mayhew I’m the happiest girl in the world, with people who I know would never leave me out in the cold.

the mayhew cat cabinsCats love to climb, which is why our cabins are six feet deep and stand at over eight feet tall. Cats are inquisitive creatures, so their cat cabins are made of clear UPVC which enables them to have a good nose at what’s going on around them from whichever level they choose!

They also love to feel snug so every single cabin has a comfortable bed and a personal radiator to curl up next to and abundance of toys to play with during their more active times of the day and night!

Whilst there is no substitute for a loving home and a warm lap to curl on, our facilities and caring staff and volunteers, ensure that a cat’s stay with us is as enjoyable, stress-free and stimulating as possible.

Please help us to continue to provide our wonderful cat cabins by sponsoring one today for just £9 a month.

diamOnd’s stOryHello – All my life I had known comfort inside my warm home where meals appeared regularly and I thought I was loved. I’d never gone anywhere before outside that home, so I was very frightened when I was suddenly put in a box and everything became very very dark. I couldn’t see much but I knew I was suddenly in a dangerous scary place all on my own and I could smell and see things that made me shake with terror. When I was suddenly lifted into the air again I was so very scared, but could hear voices telling me they would soon free me from my box and they knew my name and were reading from a note that told them all about me. The friendly people put me

into a new cosy home with toasty blankets but I was very worried I would be boxed up again. One lady came to visit me lots and told me I would never have to see a box again, she would love me for the rest of my life and I could go and live with her where I would always be safe.

the mayhew kitten unitsSadly, we have many young residents with us throughout the year – newborns are dumped on us, whilst others have been abandoned or handed in to us. If we are lucky the mother will be with them to care for their basic needs but all too often, she is no longer there to support her family so the role of feeder and nurturer falls to The Mayhew staff.

We have a range of especially designed facilities for our young and vulnerable – ensuring they are safe and warm. Kittens also need extra stimulation and socialisation in order to grow and develop – so their units have three floors for lots of climbing and playing and also lots of toys to aid their development.

We also have an enclosed kitten garden with a tree, tunnels and toys so that our kittens can get out and about in different environments and sample a bit of what the outside world has to offer!

Please help us to continue to provide our fantastic kitten area by sponsoring a unit today for just £5 a month.

a bOx Of kittensHello – Life is pretty crazy when you are young and in those early days I loved to run around with all my brothers and sisters and play with Mum’s tail and ears. We thought we would always live in a big happy family with Mum and each other. I don’t know where my Mum is now as in the middle of a wrestling match with my biggest brother, we were all snatched up into the air and plunged into the darkness with each other, I trod on my little sister’s paw and made her scream. We were all very frightened in the dark and were getting thrown about, then suddenly we were flying through the air, tumbling and I fell on my head on to a hard, cold surface I had never felt before and I couldn’t find my family. I was scooped

up again and landed with my brothers and sisters in another box and I thought things were going to get bad again. We were warm though and the journey was soft. I heard the lady say we were at The Mayhew and friendly hands picked us up and kissed us when they heard we had been thrown from a car and rescued by a kind cat lover. I was so happy when we got our own new house together and could chase each other up and down the stairs. As I grew up my sister and I became best friends and I couldn’t bear to be apart from her. Our new friends said we would never need to be apart again and found us the best new home where we have more cuddles than I’ve ever had and life is one long adventure.

dandeliOn’s stOryHello – Me and Burdock had always been best friends, he’s all I’ve ever known and although we didn’t like our tiny little house in the cold we could always snuggle with each other. I never knew our house could move but one day we were lifted up and Burdock and me and our house went flying through the air – I banged my head pretty hard. It wasn’t the same outside anymore and it smelt terrible and there were cars everywhere and scary noises. We knew we needed to escape so we pushed at our rotten wooden door till we got out, but were even more scared when we knew we couldn’t stay safe outside. When someone came to pick us up I was very frightened but they said we had a new

safe home to go to. They gave us lots of baths as they said we were very dirty and we got a brand new house – with stairs! – to play in and a soft new bed made out of a new thing called straw. I would have been happy to live there forever, but one day a kind face came to cuddle me and Burdock and said she had to share her life with us. I can’t believe we used to live in that tiny house, as now we get to run and play all day – we feel like the luckiest bunnies alive.
