The magazine is produced calendar monthly with the exception of January.

The Deadline for all copy is the last Tuesday of each month.

The Editor reserves the right to accept, reject or modify content submitted for publication.

The opinions/views expressed in published articles are wholly those of the respective authors, and are not necessarily those of Jaguar, the Editor, the Club, or the Members.

Presidents Report

I would like to thank all our committee members both past and present for their commitment to the club and welcome Sue Harrison as our Event Co-ordinator.

We look forward to another year working towards promoting Jaguar while having a great time with friends.

Don’t forget our next main event is SA Jag Day on the 11

th October at Brighton

Secondary School. Display vehicles need to arrive between 9am and 10.30 am and don’t forget to bring some non perishable items for our CATS & CANS food drive. (See page 6)

We will have a television onsite for those that wish to follow Bathurst during the day.

Today I had a lifetime experience that I will not forget. I was invited to attend the Jaguar Drive Day at Mallala. We enjoyed a lovely lunch and then were given a debriefing before being shown to our Racing Driver Instructor and our first Jaguar for the day.

After being taken around the track by our Race Driver for a few laps in the XJ I was to put on my helmet and take to the drivers seat. Participants of the day were taught where to brake, accelerate and the appropriate race lines.

Following some more driver training I got into the “F Type”, and did more laps under instruction. I got to drive the XJ, F Type R (V8), the F Type 3 litre AWD (my favourite) and the latest XE.

The XE was brilliant to drive and very responsive but I still can’t go past the F Type.

On the 17th and 18

th October we have our display

at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. We also have several drivers and vehicles registered for racing at the event so we are looking forward to a

great couple of days.

The same weekend we have a group of members and vehicles travelling to Echuca for the XJC Muster to celebrate its 40

th anniversary. I wish

those attending a great trip and celebrations.

I am assisting in the organization of a project with Shannons and the Birdwood Motor Museum. The event which is a fund raiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation will be a Convertible Car Show called “Take your tops off” on the 31

st

October at the Motor Museum. We are very pleased to announce that the major sponsor of the event is Solitaire Automotive.. If you are interested either go to the National Motor Museum website to register or call me. Looking forward to the warmer weather and taking the roof of our Jaguars.

VALE VIC LEIPUS

It is with sadness that I report the passing of Vic Leipus, formerly of Bryson Industries and later XJ Motors.

Vic and I go back over 40 years and he was a significant influence on my career. We first met when I was a 20-year-old mechanic, having just completed my apprenticeship. Vic was service manager at Bryson Industries of 66 Currie Street when I applied for a job there . Vic took me on and I have never looked back since.

Vic had a tough start to life – he was born in Lithuania in 1933 and subsequently moved to the Ukraine with his family at an early age. When war broke out the family was forced to move from place to place to avoid being sent to internment camps in Siberia. After the war Vic emigrated to Australia, initially to Victoria and then Adelaide, where he began working for Dominion Motors in Grote St.

Vic once told me that he was initially employed to assemble Lloyd Hartnett cars (do a google search for

these little cars) and after showing promise, his boss asked if he would like to work on Jaguar cars. Vic accepted the challenge and continued with the Jaguar marque for the rest of his working life.

Dominion Motors was taken over by Bryson Industries, at the time a very respected family owned business, and Vic rose through the ranks to become service manager – position he held until he left to form XJ Motors in partnership with Chris Holland. XJ Motors soon became the most respected Jaguar repairer in Adelaide and flourished for many years, however by the early 2000’s Vic’s health was deteriorating and he finally closed the business down.

Vic was a very talented mechanic with a wealth of knowledge, particularly on the earlier models of Jaguar – I can honestly say that I learnt much of what I know from him. He was also a keen and gifted sportsman – he was a state table tennis champion and a very good golfer and tennis player.

His wife Coralie, his children Peter, Natalia and Andrew and his many grandchildren survive Vic.

Rest in peace Vic – you will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.

Jaguar N Jaguar F-PACE First Edition announced

Limited to only 2,000 vehicles globally

Features unique design details inspired by the C-X17 concept

Technology packed, featuring the world's most advanced infotainment system

Exception value with many high specification features included as standard

Jaguar has announced the Jaguar F-PACE First Edition - an exclusive special edition F-PACE, strictly limited to just 2,000 vehicles globally

Jaguar's world-class design team have created the unique and sporty First Edition to pay homage to the F-PACE's original inspiration - the breakthrough C-X17 concept vehicle. The specially-created First Edition is the purest representation of the C-X17 and features exclusive design details true to the original concept.

The F-PACE is Jaguar's first performance crossover and is packed with world-leading technology including the new, super-fast and super-intuitive In Control Touch Pro infotainment system. Featuring sharp, contemporary graphics and a 10" tablet style touch screen, the system is complemented by a suite of specially developed apps and a wifi hotspot that allows up to eight devices to connect at once.

Gerd Mauser, Chief Marketing Officer for Jaguar Land Rover, said: "Two years ago, Jaguar revealed the C-X17, right here in Frankfurt. Since that time we have been inundated with people asking us to make it and it was this growing interest that inspired us to create the F-PACE First Edition - a Special Edition to celebrate the C-X17 concept.

"With only 2,000 units available globally, we expect the Jaguar F-PACE First Edition to sell out - we are receiving an incredible amount of interest from customers who want to be the first and who want the best."

First Edition customers can choose one of two unique paint colours, which reflect the C-X17's original two colourways: stunning Caesium Blue or regal Halycon Gold. The First Edition is also available in Rhodium Silver or Ultimate Black.

Further unique design details include special 22-inch Double Helix Alloy Wheels with grey finish and contrast inserts, a unique interior with Houndstooth embossed Windsor Leather Sports seats, special carpet mats and a Gloss Black trim finisher, which also features the modern yet quintessentially British Houndstooth pattern.

In addition to the unique features, Jaguar's designers have hand-picked their favourite F-PACE design and technology options to make the First Edition the epitome of high-specification luxury. These include Jaguar's superb, new and intuitive infotainment system - InControl Touch Pro - and sports car-derived performance technology including Adaptive Dynamics.

Red brake calipers, full-LED headlights with LED 'J' blade Daytime Running Lights, sliding panoramic roof, illuminated metal tread plates and configurable interior mood lighting are amongst the other luxurious features also included as standard. The sporty look is completed by the S model body kit, which comes as standard.

The Jaguar F-PACE First Edition is available with the 3.0-litre V6 300PS Diesel or the 3.0-litre V6 380PS Supercharged Petrol engines, both available exclusively with eight-speed automatic transmissions and All-Wheel Drive

Jaguar Land Rover Welcomes Record Intake of 600 Graduates and Apprentices . . . .

. . . . The Talent of the Future Jaguar Land Rover has welcomed nearly 600 new gradu-ates and apprentices to the business this week, the compa-ny's highest intake to date. Today the Government's Busi-ness Secretary, Sajid Javid, met some of the company's trainees and praised Jaguar Land Rover for backing the next generation of British talent.

Sajid Javid said: "It is great for Britain that we have got such a successful automotive industry and the graduates and apprentices joining Jaguar Land Rover this week will have an important role to play in building on that success in the future. I congratulate the new intake on securing the opportunity to work at the heart of the renaissance of the British car industry. Companies like Jaguar Land Rover are backing the next generation of British talent, helping people to build careers and boosting the country's productivity."

With some 2,500 employees having started their careers on Jaguar Land Rover's graduate, advanced and higher ap-prentice programmes over the past five years, this year's intake is the largest to date and more than 100 up on last year.

Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer,

met the new recruits on Monday. He commented: "I am proud to welcome tomorrow's engineers, technicians and innovators at the very beginning of their career with the company. This is an exciting time to join our business. We are investing significantly in the future of Jaguar Land Rover by creating very special vehicles for our discerning custom-ers and, just as importantly by employing and developing the highly skilled people that will help ensure our continued success."

The new graduates and apprentices are the first to start their training as part of the Jaguar Land Rover Academy, which was officially launched this week. The new Academy will offer learning and development for employees at all stages of their working lives with the company, whether they are new recruits or more experienced employees seeking to move to the next level in the organisation. This "lifelong learning" will follow a structured plan, delivering training that is relevant to changing business requirements and enabling employees to progress their careers at Jaguar Land Rover.

The Business Secretary met the apprentices and graduates at a UK car industry event held by the Society of Motor

Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) today, ahead of next week's Frankfurt international motor show. At Frankfurt, Jaguar Land Rover will be showcasing its British designed, engineered and produced vehicles. As part of this, the company promises a dramatic reveal of the all-new Jaguar F-PACE, the brand's first performance crossover.

The graduates and apprentices have begun their pro-grammes with a joint formal induction week at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. Designed to inspire participants, the in-duction has included motivational talks from Richard Noble, the former land speed record holder and Kenton Cool, one of the world's leading high-altitude climbers. Those attend-ing have also had the chance to put questions to Dr Speth and other members of the company's executive committee, familiarise themselves with the latest vehicles and have a glimpse at the future line-up.

Jaguar Land Rover's undergraduate placement scheme is increasingly becoming a feeder for the graduate pro-gramme, with 85 of the 333 graduates joining this week pre-viously having been on paid undergraduate placements with the company.

Similarly, the company's Young Women In The Know course has led to an increase in the number of females tak-ing up advanced and higher apprenticeships at Jaguar Land Rover. 14 of the girls who took the course last year are amongst the 46 new female apprentices. The Young Wom-

en In The Know initiative, launched in August 2013 as part of Jaguar Land Rover's wider education outreach, offers female students aged 15 - 18 a unique insight into engi-neering, technology and manufacturing careers.

Danella Bagnall, Vehicle Programme Director at Jaguar Land Rover is a great role model: "I started my career as an apprentice 26 years ago which was a great way of continu-ing education, developing skills, and getting into industry. I am now an engineering director, which demonstrates the excellent career progression opportunities available to wom-en in a modern engineering-led business like Jaguar Land Rover. I would thoroughly recommend a career in engi-neering to girls."

To apply for the 2016 graduate programme or undergradu-ate work placements, students should go to www.jaguarlandrovercareers.com. Recruitment for the graduate and undergraduate programmes began this week and closes on 31

st December 2015. The recruitment win-

dow for advanced and higher apprenticeships opens on 5th

October 2015, with the deadline for apprentice applications also being 31

st December 2015.

The Club Run to Mintaro . . MAGPIE & STUMP HOTEL

Sunday the 13th of September, 9.30AM, approximately 18 beautifully presented Jaguars from our various club registers headed out from Caltex Bolivar destination Mintaro.

The weather was picture perfect and that certainly made top down touring for the Thomas's in their Series 3 V12 E Type open car very nice indeed. For me it was my first drive in our rare 1995 4Lt sport coupe` since our purchase 2 years ago and that proved to be a most rewarding experience.

We were blessed to have the Ides in their MK9, which is in excellent but original condition sounding rather salubrious with the twin exhaust. This is not to take anything away from the remaining cars being a variety of XJ models from an early 1969 Series 1 right up to late model XJ40.

Finally, but certainly not to be forgotten, is the Charman's beautifully restored 420G (with working clock!). Driving direct to Mintaro was one of our founder couple life members Carol and David Seidel, members of whom I have fond memories. They sold us our first Jaguar some 25years ago and encouraged us to join the JDCSA which we did and have enjoyed 4 more Jaguars since and a hell of a lot of fun and friends.

Also driving direct was the Castles in their 2004 S Type who took the tourist route lead by Mrs Sat Nav! You guessed it they saw plenty of South Australia and arrived rather late for lunch!

The groups first stop was the unique Mintaro Maze being a lot of fun and proved a great relaxant before our fantastic and great value lunch, for 41 attendees, at the very historic Magpie and Stump Hotel. Here we met up with Vince Daly who was an active member some years ago until work sent him around all corners of Australia finally settling at Mintaro. It was great to catch up and reminisce old times.

Following lunch about half the group headed off to Martindale Hall to walk off their well proportioned feast. It is as always a pleasure to visit Martindale Hall and see how the rich and famous early settlers lived during Australia's boom wool period. The rest of us stayed in Mintaro for more chit chat and a mini club car picture shoot outside the hotel.

The drive home was uneventful, so I am informed from members, with most of us only getting home well after 7PM. Thanks must go to all the members attending and bringing out a great cross section of the Jaguar models so well presented, and I can only think this could be repeated without a second thought in the future.

Preliminary

My wife & I have been members of the club since the very first meeting at the Brecknock Hotel back in 1973 & for some time we were very active in the club & we still come to as many functions as we can.

To us Jaguars are more a way of life than simply transport.

My first car was a 2.4 Mark 2 that I bought in 1968, I had always promised myself that I would have a Jag before I finished my apprenticeship; I managed that by about 4 weeks! At the time I was driving a Riley 2.5 (a car that I will always regret selling)

When I met my wife (Val) I had the 2.4 & when we were married we took that car on our Honeymoon, in retrospect a bit of a mistake but it certainly introduced Val into the world of Jaguars.

One comical moment at our wedding reception (1970) was that my best man (Gordon Brown, also a current member of the club) had a 2.4 Mark 1, which was exactly the same colour as my car, so I was a bit bemused when I wandered outside of the reception venue to comments of “you must be an idiot bringing your car to the reception” only to observe a Mark 1 covered in shaving cream, toilet paper, lipstick & many other unmentionables, the Mark 2 was around the corner.

But we were followed & they got the poor Mark 2 that night.

But back to the Honeymoon & the start of “Cold Paws”

On our honeymoon Val & I travelled through Renmark to Wagga Wagga & on to Canberra, this was part of our “planned” trip, after this we just followed our nose & wound up in the new (relocated) Snowy mountains town of Jindabyne from there we went on to Thredbo & got our first introduction to the snow, we stayed at the Alpine Hotel in

Thredbo & I will always remember that although it was about minus 5 degrees C the staff were swimming in the pool outside our room.

It was as we were driving into Thredbo that I was aware of a slight “ticking” sound, which I dismissed as “better look for some oil tomorrow”.

The next day was one of exploration so we drove through

the Alpine Way, tried to find Olsen’s Lookout (could not find it so had to do a 3 point turn on a dirt track with a cliff at one end).

At that stage it was just a dirt track to Khancoban, 100 km of nothing, no houses, service stations, nothing, but we got through.

The noise was becoming more of a “knock” (must look for some oil!!!!!!!!!!)

We eventually got back to Cooma & decided to travel on to Canberra, it was night time, the little 2.4 was on about 5000rpm when the knock became a bang (valve through piston, con rod through sump) (it was at this point that I thought that “this could be serious”) The oil trail was also a bit of a giveaway.

So this meant stopping a car that was travelling to Cooma (no mobile phones back then) so that our distress could be conveyed to the local RACV, the tow truck that arrived was a lowered Ford F100, metallic yellow with a chrome crane driven by a youth who did not look old enough to shave, let alone drive a car & he only had a 3 metre towing chain.

I tried to explain to him that no engine in a Mark 2 meant no brakes but he proceeded to tow us into Cooma at about 120 kph & when he hit the 60 kph sign he slammed on the brakes to slow down quickly but we didn’t (bang).

(Must look for a new front bumper when we get back).

We were towed into the local Ford agency, the comment being “we don’t see many of these things in Cooma” as they tried to sell me the latest Ford XW Fairmont.

But the local Ford agency was great, they looked after the car, arranged for transport back to Adelaide & booked us into a hotel, which I think was run by the person that Basil Faulty must have been based upon, he really let us know that it was very inconvenient for us to be there & except for the cupboard in the room falling on Val & the toilet door knocking the sink off the wall, it was a great night, but I found that THE HONEYMOON WAS OVER!!!

Another Jaguar Story

COLD PAWS continued

The next day we were given a choice, fly to Melbourne in a single engine Cessna (but it was explained that due to weather conditions the plane would “have to hug the valleys & it might be a bit bumpy & you need strong nerves” or take a taxi to Canberra (100km).

We took the taxi & arranged to hire a Cortina at Canberra Airport, but the car had to be paid for up front, so I phoned my dear Dad & arranged for him to drive into Adelaide & pay for the car.

After waiting for some 4 hours (remember no mobile phones) we realised that the John Martins Christmas Pageant was on that day, in those days the city was cordoned off so dad had to park at Keswick & walk into the city, a task that was brought up for many years to come!

But, this is a long introduction into our story of “Cold Paws” which is basically a compilation of our trips to the NSW Snowy Mountains for some 45 years now using many

different Jags from our Mark2 (2.4 & 3.8), XJ6S1, XJ6S2, Vanden Plas V12 & XJ40 & soon I hope our XK150 FHC.

Most probably far too long for one Classic Marque but I will leave it to our editor to decide just how this epic story is printed (if at all). We have many stories & want to build an image of the NSW Snowy Mountains & the incredible history & environment there.

It could be that this may not get into the Classic Marque, but if it does I hope that it entertains more members than it bores, time will tell.

I have broken this saga up into the following chapters:

The Mark 2 Years

The XJ Years

Various dramas encountered & averted.

We look forward to the next instalment of COLD PAWS—Ed.

21 The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

Many of our club members own classic Jaguar & Daimler models such as XK’s, Mk 2’s, S Types, E Types etc and find that by modern standards they are extremely heavy in the steering. The main reason is that these cars were designed in an era when cross ply tyres were the norm and consequently grip between the tyre and the road was much lower. With the almost universal adoption of radial ply tyres these days we are faced with much greater effort being required to steer the car.

Some of these cars are hairy chested brutes to drive and this combined with our advancing age and getting ‘soft’ due to the highly automated world we now live in means that we are often reluctant to drive our classics. So what can we do about it?

Obviously the answer is to fit power steering, and until recently, this was not always practical or cost effective. In the case of XK’s and Series 1 E Types, power steering was never an option and in the case of Mk 2, Daimler V8 and S type the optional hydraulic systems were not very good in the first place – criticized for lacking feel, being too light and prone to leaking. Besides, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find good secondhand systems suitable for fitting.

There have been many attempts over the years to adapt and fit power assisted rack and pinion steering systems but these are normally a disaster. The donor racks are normally from XJ models that have a much wider track, and the consequent difference in the arc that the tie rod prescribes and that of the suspension uprights causes significant ‘bump steer’ making the handling unpredictable and unsafe at speed. I have never been a fan of these systems – especially after seeing some of the poorly made mountings that would never pass an engineering inspection.

Many of you by now would have heard of the excellent E-Z electric power steering system being made in

Holland – it has been enthusiastically received by a wide variety of classic car brand owners and is highly recommended by leading classic magazines.

My company, Classic & Sportscar Boutique, has fitted quite a few of these systems to several different Jaguar models now and I am hugely impressed. The kit contains a new steering column assembly that has a gearbox and electric motor incorporated into it, as well as a speed sensor and all the required electronics and wiring. The original steering box and related track rods and tie rods are retained, so the geometry remains unchanged. The system is speed sensitive so that maximum assistance is provided at zero speed – i.e. when parking & maneuvering, and then diminishes as speed increases to provide good road feel. Additionally, should there be an electrical failure the car has the original unassisted steering still working and will drive exactly as it has for the past 40 or 50 years.

Because the system is mounted under the dashboard, there are no modifications required under bonnet, such as power robbing engine driven pumps etc.

Fitting takes about a day and is often a good opportunity to repair or replace other steering components and indicator switches etc.

This system was recently voted the best classic car product by the influential Octane magazine in the UK, and for good reason. I have established a good working relationship with the E-Z power steering company and provide them with feedback regarding any suggestions to help continually improve the product.

Several of our long term club members have had these systems fitted and are delighted with the result. I plan to have a demonstration unit at the upcoming Jaguar day in October and would be only too happy to discuss the benefits with club members.
