Today’s Readings

The Most Holy Trinity

"Baptize them in the name of the Father and of

the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40 Moses’ address to the people of Israel cites their unique vocation, and then he links it with the specialness of the “Lord your God.” Second Reading: Romans 8:14-17 The Christian life is lived in the Spirit and is destined for glory. The Christian becomes a child of God, empowered to call God “Abba”, which is equivalent to “Daddy.” Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20 This dramatic ending of Matthew’s gospel includes the so-named “Great Commission”. In the present time, this command of the Lord still holds true for believers, whose daunting task is made easier by Jesus’ promise to be with us doing it.

The Word This Week

When the Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, it is an attempt to summaries the whole mystery of our God into one day. This is not just a "theological feast" ` but a feast which should speak to us of this simple fact of faith: the Father loves us, has revealed that love in his Son, and has called into a relationship sustained by the

Spirit. It is our joy that, as baptized members of the Church, we can somehow share in that divine life and love which is the Trinity~ becoming children of God. God has chosen us, and we are his own people, just as he chose the people of Israel long ago. The mystery of the Trinity is not meant to make this more difficult - on the contrary it is to clarify and summaries all that our faith is about: that we are children - with the Son, in the power of the Spirit - of the one Father.

Feast of the Most Holy Trinity

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

This past March I had the honor of baptizing my second

great nephew, one Benjamin Anthony. One of the great

thrills we priests have is to do such things in and for our

families. In a happy coincidence, the parents are now

members of the parish from which I retired as pastor. So

it was memories galore surrounding the event. But as I

poured the water on that tiny forehead the present

moment was the supreme one. As I did so, I repeated the

words of Our Lord recorded in today’s Gospel. They

comprise what has since become known as “the Great

Commission.”

Those familiar words we all say as we make the sign of

the cross were originally Our Lord’s parting words to the

Eleven Apostles, and constituted His marching orders, so

to speak. What deep mystery is wrapped in Jesus’ use of

the singular word “name” applied to three Persons with

different names!

Whatever temptation enters a preacher’s mind to explain

the Trinity is risky, because it is inexplicable. Analogies

have been made, such as St. Patrick’s shamrock, and the

modern use of H2O, which remains in the liquid, ice and

vapor form. We remain incapable of grasping the inner

nature of our Creator, so far beyond our experience as

creatures.

We have Jesus’ word on it, and when you ponder the fact,

you can easily conclude that He gave us a gift when He

revealed this truth. It is His love for and trust in us that

prompted Him to reveal just Who God is. It is not

unlike the self-revelation we make over time to people we

love and trust. That openness forms the divide between

our many acquaintances and our much fewer close

friends. We go about our mission knowing we are greatly

loved, despite our unworthiness.

As for the matter of making disciples, we have to admit it

is a tall order. The Eleven must have thought so,

especially since they spent much of their adult lives as

fishermen. But note Jesus’ consoling words: “And I am

with you all days until the end of the age.” We link that

with the words of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary “There

is nothing God cannot do” and the fear factor dissolves.

A cautionary note: we cannot pretend that such is the job

for others, but not us. Of bishops and priests, perhaps.

Or nuns and lay missionaries. It is the task of every

baptized person. If there is any preaching to do at all, it’s

done without words. It is the powerful example of how

you live; how you speak; how you conduct your affairs;

manage your money; exercise your sexuality; drive your

car; treat your family and friends; and generally practice

your faith that will make all the difference.

We have now the example of Pope Francis. He has

exhorted us by his words to leave our comfort zones and

be a Church that goes out into the streets to meet the

world face to face. But what the world notes are his

actions. To its wonder they match. So, with the Trinity

behind us and the pope ahead of us, we can’t lose, even if

from time to time we face setbacks. It is more than good

to remember that “Christianity is a way of walking as

well as a way of talking.”
