tailgateTALK
By Jack Chastain, Editor
As we toil through the “Dog Days of Summer” surviving
the oppressive Texas heat, let us rejoice that August marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new school and show season. This issue covers the annual TJHA-TJPHA State Show and field day. It was another huge success and they seem to just get bigger and better each year. Many thanks are due to all the juniors and adults who contributed to the event.
We are proud of the June/July issue we were able to assemble. Thanks to all advertisers. Hereford demand seems to keep growing. By the number of calls and private sale results, we should have a fantastic fall sale season.
Our web site continues to be very active in getting sale results. I am most pleased to hear from those of you who call to tell me the cattle are sold. I encourage more members to avail themselves of
this service. More cattle listings will only draw more parties looking to buy. Success breeds success. We have been extremely lenient with those of you who list cattle for sale and leave them listed until told
they are sold. As more people use this tool, we will have to set limitations on the listings. But for now, keep the information coming.
The THA is involved in a lot of activities and the next few weeks are when a number of these events will take place. We co-sponsor a booth at the annual Beef Cattle Short Course in College Station with TPHA. I am excited to hear from a number of members who have never attended the BCSC that plan to attend the 2011 event. I look forward to this event every year because of all the interesting new people I have the opportunity to meet and learn from. The program is also very timely and beneficial to anyone involved with cattle.
THA needs some help. The executive committee in seeking ideas for revenue would like to put together another challenge pen of heifers to sell at the annual
replacement sale in Fort Worth in January. This is in addition to the Heritage pen that our faithful donors have provided for the past few years. We would like for at least ten directors to volunteer to donate a late fall 2010 or early spring 2011 open heifer. If you have a heifer to contribute, let Jack Chastain know and he will arrange to assemble the group and get them cared for until the sale on January 29, 2012.
I remind members that entries are soon due for our new Fall Classic sale in Buffalo as well as the Cowtown Select Sale and the 43rd Annual Whiteface Replacement female sale. Remember we accept black baldie heifers and really need to increase our numbers in this division in order to continue to offer this class. Please help us gather a quality offering. If you do not have heifers, encourage a customer or neighbor to consign a pen or two. A successful sale is a good reflection for everyone involved in the Hereford industry. There are many shows, sales and other promotional events coming in the next few months. I encourage THA members to attend all that you can and promote your Hereford breed every chance you get. ★
