Spring is in full bloom and it’s time to crank it up for another productive insect season. I’msure you all are as busy as I am with a wonderful start to the season. We have had a greatApril in pest control sales thanks to some early warm weather and a crew that is energized toserve their communities!
Things are no different with the Washington State Pest Management Association. Since ourlast General Membership Meeting in Hood River, our Committees and Board have been busyat work lining up CEU courses for the rest of this Spring, Summer and Fall. BedBug Centralwill be coming to town in August to hold their Bedbug University and we will have a greatlineup of industry speakers this Fall including Roger Gold, Gail Getty and Lonnie Andersonspeaking on the latest in their fields of expertise.
The WA PAC has been busy as well putting together an annual golf tournament and fundraiserto help refill the coffers which have been depleted the last couple of election seasons. Westand our best chance in years to elect representatives who will be friendly to our industry soplease help out by making a tax deductible donation to the PAC by contacting our AssociationExecutive, Tim Baker, at [email protected]. I am also excited to announce that the Pacific NorthwestPest Management Conference has joined with theWSPMA and the OPCA to help add funding to both stateAssociation annual scholarships. The PNWPMC will add$3,500 to each annual scholarship fund for a total of$4,500 to recognize and celebrate one of our young up-and-coming PMP’s in Washington State and provide needededucational resources for higher learning in both Oregonand WA. It’s the WSPMA’s goal to encourage our youngPMP stars to shine and help keep the Washington PestManagement industry on the cutting edge nationally.
If you know a PMP that you would like to recognize forthis scholarship, PLEASE encourage him or her to submitan application form located on the WSPMA website forconsideration. We will take all applications through theend of the year and will award the recipient for 2014 at thePNWPMC banquet Friday February 27th, 2015.

Traditionally, Univar hosts a Thursday night theme party to kick off the conference.
This year it was “Fan Apparrel”. Some sported their personal jersey but the greatest
number of outerwear was honoring the Super Bowl Champion Seahawks. Go Hawks!

The meeting was called to order at 3:40 pm by President,
Sean Bergmann, pictured far left. Also pictured left to right
is President Elect, Jack Dein; Dr. Laurel Hansen and our
Education Chairman, Rick Mix.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
Larry Treleven reported on the circumstances surrounding
the saving of Sulflorylfloride (Profume) from cancellation by
the EPA. For more information, refer to the article in the
Spring 2014 Pest Intelligencer.
Incidents of misapplication of pesticides have brought polli-
nator protection to the front nationally.
The PAC fund is in need of funding. Larry explained the
criteria for an individual or a company to contribute.
He is organizing a golf tournament for May
22nd at Canterwood, followed by a barbeque at
his home. More information will be sent.
EDUCATION
Elmer Bensinger is organizing a seminar for
early May to focus on pollinator protection &
regulations. Location TBA. Then, later in July,
a two day seminar with Bed Bug Central. The
Education Committee has a planning seminar
scheduled for May 8th. Time & location TBA
EASTERN WASHINGTON
Paul Nibarger recapped the events of the training seminar in
February.
FINANCIAL:
Tim Baker reported we are down in revenue but up in profit.
Education is our greatest income stream. Home Inspectors
continue to leave the Membership. We do need classes that
provide them with DOL CEU’s.
OLD BUSINESS & OPENNING COMMENTS
Tim Baker reported that the DOH pyrethroid study results
have been published. The web address can be found in the
article appearing in the spring 2014 issue of the Pest Intelli-
gencer. The results are favorable to our industry. Participa-
tion was less than what they were expecting.
Tim Baker updated progress of The “Benevolent Fund”, a
means in which funds can be set aside for Members experi-
encing grief or financial hardship. It can be contributed to
voluntarily by checking a box and filling in an additional
amount on the 2014 Membership renewal form. As the funds
are used, an announcement will be sent out to the Member-
ship.
Sean Bergmann explained the criteria for “The Scholarship
Fund”. $1000.00 to be awarded for industry related educa-
tion. . Applicants must be WSPMA Members. The
PMWPMC will contribute also. That amount to be deter-
mined. Jack Dein moved to approve the proposal. It was sec-
onded by Tony Wurst. All agreed.
Contact a Board Member with nominees for 2015 Vice
President. The election will be at the Leavenworth meeting,
September 6th.
Golf will be ½ price for last year’s participants, due to the
rain storm, resulting in cancellation at our 2013 tournament.
NEW BUSINESS & CLOSING COMMENTS
Eradipest has contacted NPMA regarding online chemical
sales. NPMA is trying to mitigate with no progress to date.
No license is needed to perform heat treatments. The WSDA
will not get involved with that issue.
Dan Suomi position at WSDA is not being filled at this time.

finally gets to relax after the non stop duties leading up to the Friday evening
gala, silent auction & the live auction. The house was packed & lively. The
drawing for half the pot of raffle ticket money was won by Rennie Kubick of
Amvac. The remaining half will go toward research via the “Norm Ehmann
Fund”. Rennie did re-donate by bidding on a nice vacation package.
So much generosity! The donations and bidding war was a great success.

The program for the Eastern WA Training Seminar will be
repeated at the Western WA Training Seminar.
WSDA Credits can only be applied from one or the other
if you choose to attend both sessions.

The WSPMA is partnering with BedBug Central to start off
the season, with an all day bed bug seminar at Highline Com-
munity College. This is an opportunity to learn of the latest
bed bug research, application techniques and products.
Next in the line up, Larry Stamp has organized an all day SPI/
WDO seminar that will be held at South Puget Sound Com-
munity College in Olympia.
In our continuing efforts to provide excellent educational op-
portunities to the pest management profession in Washington
State, the Education Committee is bringing Gail Getty, Dr.
Roger Gold, and Lonnie Anderson to our state for our all day
fall training seminars, first in Spokane and repeated in Kent.
This should be a great learning opportunity from the leading
experts in our industry.
Details for all the events on the calendar above will be avail-
able on the WSPMA website, through email and mailed fly-
ers. Continuing education credits will be applied for through
the WSDA for all classes and through WSDA & DOL for the
SPI/ WDO seminar.
Our Education Committee is looking for volunteers to serve
on the committee. To participate please contact any Board
Member or me. We are always looking for new ideas, educa-
tional opportunities or educators. If you have thoughts along
these lines or have a particular interest please do not hesitate
to contact us.

J.T. Eaton announced the promotion of James Rodriguez to the position of national marketing
manager for the pest control division, based in Twinsburg, Ohio.
Effective immediately, Rodriguez will be responsible for spearheading the marketing and
communication of the professional products divisions and supporting all territory divisions
with key accounts, while assisting in product development and improvement of existing
products.
Rodriguez brings 28 years of professional experience to the position, and continues to grow
with the industry. “His lifelong commitment to this industry is prevalent in all he does, and his
drive to learn and provide quality education to pest professionals has taken J.T. Eaton to a new
level,” says J.T. Eaton National Sales Manager Craig Velte.Additionally,
Rodriguez continues to hold multiple licenses in Fumigation, Termite & Pest Control in
California and is A.C.E Certified. Congratulations James!
Our long time sale representative for Bell Labs,
Scott Harris, has taken the position of Sales
Manager with Zoecon/Central Life Sciences in
Folsom, California. Although we will miss him
in the Pacific Northwest, this will allow him to
work closer to his home & family.

M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) has been the buzz theme over the last couple of
years. Maybe M&A should stand for Marriage and Adjustment. Remember Chrysler
and Daimler? How about Moore and Krutcher? Anheuser-Busch and In Bev? Sonny
and Cher? These are some examples of M&A that took some wild turns once the
ceremony was done. It is most likely that there will be more and more branding
connections as we grow in the big global pie. I just read that Audi, AT&T, Warner
Brothers, Google and golly knows who else have “strategically” joined for a new
cross branded A3. (That’s the car) Great minds have hypothesized that by
co-mingling the assets of each part that it must create a greater good. (Please note the “marriages above”)
Perhaps, in it rawest form, that is what we do here in the Association. We work to bring together the people with the background
and knowledge to create a greater good. Starting out simple enough as to educate our Members, thus then evolving into
increased activity in all levels of government affairs, and then finally getting to the “who’s the big dog now” era. We are aging.
(Beats the alternative) Adaptation is vital to continued success. We must utilize new skills, new ideas, and new money to
achieve whatever end result we set out to achieve. Basically; the only reason you start a business is to be able to sell a business
at considerable profit. You certainly didn’t want to just “pay” for the right to have a job.
Where do we go next? The Association has much talent at its disposal from the largest of International Companies to the “guy in
the truck”. Let’s tap it all and grow together, yet singularly, as we aspire to be a fiercely independent lot. At what point is big too
big. When do we lose touch with “small business”? Who will be the entrepreneurs of the future if all the “aging” companies
succumb to big money buy outs?
Think hard about all the changes recently (you’ll know soon enough) and within the past year. I can ask the question, not answer
it, as your “humble” XO. Marriage can be a beautiful thing. Adjustment is vital. Mergers and Acquisitions will continue to
happen. Buck up and be ready.
