It belongs to the Rhabdoviriclae family
and the Lyssavirus genus.
The Rabies virus is a bullet shaped viron
with a single strand of RNA nucleocapsid
core and lipoprotien envelope that is about
400nm long.
In the 19th century Louis Pasteur developed a vaccine that prevented
Rabies....
Rabies is one of the oldest
documented disease in the world.
It can be traced back to the 23rd
century in Babylon.
It was confirmed in 1936 when it was
grown in the lab.
A vaccine was successfully
administrated to a rabid dog in 1885.
Rabies is transferred through:
➢ A bite from a rabid animal/human
➢ A bite from a rabid animal to another animal.
➢ Saliva entering an open wound or mucous membrane.
In Animals:➢ Odd behaviour
➢ Foaming at the mouth
➢ Fear of water
➢ Violent outbursts
➢ Solitude
➢ Not eating food or drinking water
➢ Continuous biting/scratching at site of injury
➢ Death
In Humans:➢ Pain at the bite site
➢ Fever
➢ Headache
➢ Fear of water
➢ Sore throat
➢ Muscle aches
➢ Paralysis
➢ Convulsions
➢ Death
FACTS: Incubation period (2-3 months)
59 000 people die from rabies per year
Bats, rabbits and raccoons can transmit
rabies
4 out of 10 deaths occur in children
under 15 years of age
Can cause in mild cases:
Soreness, Redness, Swelling, Itching (30%-74%)
Headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle aches, dizziness(5%-40%)
Hives, pain in joints, fever(6%)
Can cause in serious cases:
Severe allergic reactions
Serious harm
Death
GBS (Guillain Barre Syndrome)
(although serious problems from Rabies vaccinations are very rare)
Very high fever or behaviour changes or
severe allergic reaction
These would start a few moments to a few
hours after the vaccine..
Preventative vaccine- 3 doses
➢ Dose 1- as appropriate
➢ Dose 2- 7 days after dose 1
➢ Dose 3- 21 to 28 days after dose 2
If someone is exposed to a “potentially rabid animal”
Pet – caught and isolated for 10 days to be observed for rabid symptoms
Wild animals – caught, then killed and tested for the virus
As rabies is a fatal disease, if exposed to
a potentially rabid animal, it is best to
start the series of shots until evaluation
and further information of the animals
rabies status is available.
A Rabies Immune Globulin is the first
injection given to help prevent the
virus from infecting the individual.
