Belizean music commands motion. It is felt by children on the playgroundand fans in the bleachers at footballmatches. Music accompanies theGarifuna woman as she plants and asshe reaps. Songs are requested on theradio by just about everyone, as a ges-ture in celebration of a special event oraccomplishment. Neighbors annoy eachother with their insatiable taste forrhythm. From the sacred to the profane,Belizean music reaches across barri-ers of language, race, age and class. Itis the sound of daily life, the soul and

energy of a people in constant motion.A new CD featuring some of Belize’smost dynamic artists was recently re-leased by Stonetree Records and is a 12song compilation featuring variousBelizean styles and artisits. Through the years, Belize’s musicallandscape has been shaped by the infu-sion of its home-grown creativity with awide range of regional musical influ-ences. With no ending to the amount of tal-ent in our little slice of paradise, itseems only right to feature a few keyfigures in our artisan community. Themajority of artworks found on the is-land are composed of shells, stones, wood, seeds, jadeite, ceramics, coco-nut and more. Bracelets, necklaces, pendants, curios, jewelry boxes, toname a few, spill out onto the streetsand along the beach where vendors havecamped out to sell their wares. Prices

so for nearly seven years. A bit of talkwith Johanna reveals that her summervacation is spent out on the beach, en-joying the cool breeze while she craftsnew necklaces or runs around havingsome fun in the water. An idyllic sum-mer vacation indeed! She is quiteknowledgeable of all her items for sale, and she reveals that as a little girl, shelearned crafting from another vendor, who taught her the names of the differ-ent stones and materials. Also uniqueto her stand are some coconut pendantsand earrings. The big agate stone neck-laces are a true draw, with their dra-matic flecks of color and chunky de-

signs. Johanna happily points out herfavorites, and it’s hard to resist pick-ing up a few items that could go per-fectly with that newwardrobe…hmmm…! Further down the beach we comeacross Luisa RamosLuisa RamosLuisa RamosLuisa RamosLuisa Ramos. Also on her tableare some beautiful shell bracelets andbeaded necklaces and stone pendants. It’snot hard to notice the differences amongstthe vendors. Normally, a visitor wouldprobably stop by one vendor thinking eachstall is the same, but as we discover, thatis just not true! Each vendor prides them-selves in offering something a little dif-ferent from the other, and helps reduce

the competition. Luisa and her familyhave been in the beading and craft sellingbusiness for over twenty years. It’s got-ten so easy to craft a new necklace; ittakes Luisa’s daughter a mere thirty min-

Artisans for over 15years, and originally from Argentina,Omar and Paulina offer truly uniqueitems. Hot on their list is their ceramicventure. Loaded on their tables are ce-ramic jewelry boxes, pendants, andMayan calendar symbols. Speaking toPaulina, we discover that she has stud-ied cultures and focused on the Mayansects. For her, creating the Mayan sym-bols and educating others on their mean-ings, and helping buyers locate theirmonth symbol gives her great satisfac-tion. Each necklace comes with a copyof the symbol, its Mayan name and itsmeaning. Created by hand, fired andglazed, painted and finished in San Pedro, the ceramics are true San Pedro origi-nals and full of history and rich in cul-

Wolfe’s Woofers

“Doctor Dougie! You’re the last person I expected to see in BC’s tonight. What are you doing in Belize at this time of year?”

“We had a long weekend holiday in Canada last week and I decided to add afew more days to it and spend them in San Pedro.”

I usually only see Doug when it is very cold in Canada but I hear from himyear round. We exchange emails of possibly the worst jokes to ever find theirway into the English language.

“Did you hear the one about the blind man and the lady with the umbrella?”

“No.”

As I sat up my musical instruments for the gig we told jokes and chatted. Agood-looking blonde tourist in a bikini came in and sat two stools away fromDoug.

“I bet you haven’t heard the one about the dentist and the priest playing golf,”Doug said, although I could see his mind was on the blonde.

When he finished the joke he turned to the lady and said, “Pardon me, miss, but may I buy you a drink?”

She looked him over and said, “Sure, but absolutely no more than two drinks.Too much alcohol causes severe problems with my legs.”

“I’m really sorry to hear that,” Doug said. “Do they swell?”

“No. They spread.”
