Minions for Minyan
By Rabbi Susan Grossman
Judging by the new Minions movie, I am not the
only fan of these yellow characters introduced in the
Despicable Me movies. It may be their slapstick
humor or their cuteness, but I think there is something
more. Like the comedy teams of Abbot and Costello
or the Marx Brothers, under all their ribbing, the
Minions care and go to bat for each other.
I am struck by the similarity between these
Minions and our own Minyan, the quorum of ten
needed to recite certain prayers including Mourner’s
Kaddish. Throughout history, the minyan has been the
basic building block of Jewish identity and unity. It
was not uncommon for a stranger to be approached on
a city street with the question, “Are you Jewish?” and
if the answer was yes, that person was asked to, and
often would, help make the minyan. This tradition
still occurs in some communities. (Oh for the day that
women would be approached to help make the
minyan, too!) There is an unspoken understanding
that we all share the same goal, that of caring and
going to bat for our fellow Jews.
One of the most important ways we care for
and go to bat for each other is by being one of the
Minions that support the Minyan. Anyone who has
lost a loved one knows how disorienting and alienat-
ing that journey of loss is. That is why our Sages
decreed that Mourners’ Kaddish can only be recited
within a minyan. Summers are particularly difficult.
With so many of our regular minions away, more
minions are needed to help sustain our weekday
minyans.
Services are held at 7:30 pm Sunday through
Thursday. These services are only 15 minutes long,
but they are a very important 15 minutes. These 15
minutes can help lighten a mourner’s burden of
sorrow, but only if a minyan is present. Bring the kids
to model this critically important element of Jewish
identity and tradition. (Some kids even count towards
the minyan!)
One of the delights of the first and second
Despicable Me films that introduced us to the Minions
is that their “despicable” master, Gru, is not so despic-
able after all. Once he experiences what it means to be
cared for, he commits himself to taking care of others,
particularly his family and his minions. Our Master in
Heaven placed us on this earth to care and go to bat
for each other. One of the ways we can do that is by
becoming one of the minions to make the Minyan this
summer! Please sign up for a minyan slot on our
website (www.beth-shalom.net) or just show up. The
more minions the better!
On behalf of David, Yoni and Pops, I wish you
a safe and revitalizing summer filled with joy and the
satisfaction that comes from being with family and
friends, and doing acts of kindness for others.

A message from the President - Alan Zeman (contact Alan at presidentbeth-
Looking back, we had a year
we can all be proud of with
engaging family and adult
programming, fantastic con-
certs, amazing congregational
support for our Annual
Appeal, which came in over
goal, and one of our best
fundraisers, and fun events ever, the Maccabeats
concert. Thank you to all the volunteers, clergy and
staff who made these events so successful. We must
be doing something right because we welcomed many
new members to the Beth Shalom family this year.
As you come by this summer, excuse the dust as we
begin the first stage of our
larger renovation plans, beginning with our bath-
rooms. More information about future plans will be
coming this fall.
Of course, Beth Shalom continues to provide services
and programming over the summer. Join us on Friday
evenings for our Summer Shabbat Soiree Pot Luck
Dinner & Service at congregant’s homes. I am host-
ing the Soiree on July 24 and everyone is invited.
Saturday morning and Tisha B’Av services continue
as usual throughout the summer in our air conditioned
sanctuary. For young families, we are again hosting
Watermelon Wednesdays monthly after camp pick up.
Check out the details elsewhere in the Scroll for all
these programs.
As we look forward to the coming year, committees
are busy planning bigger and better program-
ming. Let me and our other Board members know
what Beth Shalom can do for you! Most important,
get involved.
Volunteer 15 minutes for evening minyan. (With less
people in town, it becomes even more important to
support our evening minyan Sunday – Thursday at
7:30 pm.) Or volunteer a few hours. It’s your call, so
please call. The list of committee chairs appears else-
where in the Scroll.
Hope to see you soon. In the meantime, on behalf of
my wife, Mary Okada and myself, I wish you a
healthy and happy summer.

Summer Shabbat Soiree Press Release 2015
Beth Shalom's 2015 Summer Shabbat Soirees -- our ninth summer! -- we are
ready to roll! Beginning July 17th, we will once again be getting together in
the homes of congregants on Friday nights for potluck (kosher dairy/pareve)
dinner-and-a-service activities, our synagogue’s delightful laid-back summer
celebrations to welcome Shabbat.
Hosts will be announced in the e-Scroll two to three weeks before each
Soiree. (For those who don’t receive the e-Scroll, consider signing up, or
check with the synagogue office periodically.) Guests must then contact
EACH host to sign up in advance (no later than the Tuesday of that week) and work out what they will bring.
For guests who don’t keep kosher (and/or cook), there are plenty of tasty commercially-prepared foods that
are kosher, even in ordinary supermarkets. If you want to cook, we have developed FAQs on how (and sug-
gestions on what) to prepare kosher dairy and pareve foods in a non-kosher kitchen. It is easier than you
might think – but, as there are different standards for keeping kosher, hosts have final say about what may or
may not be brought into their homes.
For those who want only the Shabbat service, you are welcome to join the Soirees after dinner because there
will not be a service at the synagogue on the nights we hold Soirees. Please contact the hosts so they can
make sure they have enough chairs and books.
Foodies, start polishing your recipes for this rare opportunity to show off your home-cooked goodies to the
Beth Shalom family. Everyone, prepare for evenings of fun!
If you have any questions, please email Barbara Pollack at [email protected].
Beth Shalom Religious School Opening Day and Open House
Sunday, August 30
The first day of Beth Shalom's Religious School will be an open house day for our
students and prospective students to get a taste of what the upcoming year will be
like. Each class will have a chance to play games to get to know one another
(returning students and prospective students together), review learning from previous
years, and be exposed to all of the aspects of Beth Shalom's Religious School.
We will have an orientation session for parents, opportunities to meet with Rabbi Grossman and
Rabbi Plotkin, and a special program from the Beth Shalom Sisterhood.
Watch your e-mail for more information this summer, and invite your friends to join us that morning.

Beth Shalom Libraries in the Chaitovitz Classroom
Come and see what’s happening to The Steven Chilton Memorial Children’s Library and the Myer and Phyllis Kuritzy Memorial Library. Our shelves are filling up with all sorts of interesting books. We’ve started to create an online catalog so Beth Shalom mem-bers can find out what the Library has that they can use. There is still much work ahead to get our Libraries in order. Jobs to do:
Evaluate the existing collection for timeliness and value.
Help determine library hours, borrowing rules, and library ac-cess.
Repair, cover and label books, enter data in the libraries’ cata-log.
Identify new titles to add to the collection,
At this time, the Beth Shalom Libraries are not accepting dona-tions of books.
To volunteer to help with this project, please call Irva Nachlas-Gabin at (410) 997-7759 or email to [email protected].

Beth Shalom Congregation Men’s Club
Everyone knows that Beth Shalom has a strong, vibrant and active Sisterhood. It's time for the Men's Club at Beth Shalom to come out of hibernation where it has been for the past few years. An equally strong, vibrant and active Men's Club is vitally important to the growth and health of the Congregation. I have been a member of the Beth Shalom Board the last couple of years in charge of Communications and my term has expired. I am stepping up to help re-energize the Beth Shalom Men's Club. Our mission should be:
1. To strengthen the involvement of the Men's Club members in the life of Beth Shalom. 2. To help integrate and grow Beth Shalom institutions. 3. To promote a more thorough knowledge and appreciation of Jewish life. 4. To stimulate social and cultural activities among the members and in the community at large. 5. To train knowledgeable leaders for the synagogue and the Jewish community.
Come on guys! We already have a group of guys who get together and watch football. We already have a bowling league. Last year a large group of us went on a hike. We help the Sisterhood in the kitchen. A group goes to baseball games in both Baltimore and DC. Every year we build and take down the Sukkah. We do a lot of things in and around the synagogue and it is time to formalize our activities and make them more unified. We are looking for fellow congregants who feel it is important to start the formation of an active and involved Menʼs Club. We need to get things started by brainstorming what we want to do and get our first few events off the ground. This should get us well on our way to rejuvenating the Beth Shalom Men's Club. Our Men's Club will be a breath of fresh air and will be filling a void in congregational activities.
We need to develop a list of possible activities our Men's Club might offer. They need to be a variety including some that are religious-oriented, others that involve community service, and some that are social or recreational. Our Men's Club will be whatever our membership wants it to be. Some of the things a Men's Club can do are Support Congregational Youth financially and through programs, enhance Jewish observance at the Synagogue and at home, Increase Involvement in the Jewish community, work on and expand projects to support the Congregation, create camaraderie and Ruach, Set a
Positive Example for our Children, Provide Social and Recreational Activities and Enhance an Understanding of World Jewry and its Problems.
So, I am looking for men who want to be involved in the rebirth of the Beth Shalom Men's Club. If you would like to get involved in its development, either give me a call at 443-285-9336 or email me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.

Committee and Community News
Social Action News by Roger Gabin, Social Action Committee Chair
It's been a productive year for the Social Action Committee. Here is a summary of our activities:
Hanukkah Extravaganza: We collaborated with Rabbi Plotkin and the religious school stu-
dents to identify and carry out social action activities.
Indian Cave: We mobilized community members to attend a February public meeting about
development that threatened the Indian Cave on Harriet Tubman Lane, part of the Underground
Railroad.
Cold Weather Shelter: We supported the Kittamaqundi community during their week shelter-
ing approximately 25 Howard County homeless residents, providing driving, food, laundry, and entertainment services
Don't Burn That Chametz: We collected chametz for donation to the Howard County Food Bank.
Road Clean-up: We picked up trash along Harriet Tubman Lane from the synagogue to Cedar Lane
Grassroots Motel Boxes: With the religious school, we delivered 5 boxes of food for Grassroots participants
temporarily sheltered in local motels.
Thanks to everyone who helped make these events happen: Ora Fisch, Andrea
LeWinter, Sharon Shoemaker, Beverli Goldberg, Lenny Cohen, Pearl Seidman,
Mindy Sperling and her mom Jeannette, Scott Klein, Linda Nachenberg, Frankie
and Sylvie Staines.
Thanks to the Social Action Committee members for their time and hard work: Abby
Glassberg, Linda Eisenberg, Rabbi Plotkin, Alan Seidman, Margie Steiner, Sherri
Kersey, Barbara Miller, Mary Anne Newkirk.
A special thank-you to Abby Glassberg. She was everywhere: baking cookies with religious school students at the Ha-
nukkah Extravaganza, mobilizing support to preserve the Indian cave, coordinating Beth Shalom's activities to support
the Cold Weather Shelter (and providing entertainment one evening herself), collecting chametz, and leading the Road
Clean-up. Thank you, Abby, for your time, energy, and devotion.

Beth Shalom is trying a new approach to Minyan participation. It’s a mitzvah to make a Minyan for those
reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish. Please sign up now! Even one night a month helps out, though more is always appreciated. If you're unable to make your
scheduled weekly Minyan time, please sign up for at least 4 other days.
