PRESIDENT GENERAL’S MESSAGE

David Hanover, KSJ

Thanks to you, our members, The Sons of the Republic of Texas had a very suc-cessful 2013, experiencing membership growth and excellent publicity. With social media, the publicity is no longer confined to your community or our great State of Texas; rather, SRT is seen around the world. Thank you for being out there with your planned activities that promote the historical dates, events and people that remind the public of our proud Republic of Texas heritage. maintaining the Republic of Texas, ulti-mately leading to becoming the 28th state of the United States. The months of March and April are filled with opportunities for you to lead or participate in some of those remem-brances in your local communities!

2012 and 2013 have been memorable, humbling and proud years as your President General. I have attended many of your meet-ings, events and dedications that have pro-moted our mission, purpose and goals. With all of the excitement that I have observed, you inspired me, after years of procrastina-tion, to complete two other heritage society applications and one SRT supplemental ap-plication; the SRT application honored an ancestor who had not been documented in our records. I encourage you to make 2014 the year in which you finally “get around to

it.” It is no wonder why Texans are so proud,

and we must remind the public continu-ally about what part the Republic of Texas played in our state’s and country’s rich his-tory. All one has to do is to read the words carved on the “Spirit of Sacrifice” cenotaph in Alamo Plaza or on the base of the San Jacinto Monument, now possible with only quick search on your electronic device! But better yet, why not visit these and other historic places in 2014? For one of those historic sites, come to San Antonio in early April to greet our new administration that will be elected at the Annual Meeting; be there to wish them well as they lead our great organization into the future!

SRT this year has opened a new chapter in history with the planned themed activities at the annual meeting. If this is a successful annual meeting, which by all indications it will be, SRT will have themed annual meetings in the future. The enhancements this year are being made possible through the generosity of many friends and SRT members who contributed to the FUNraising for the annual meeting. Robert and Julie Franks, Dick and Kitty Lindley, Clay and Carrie Fisher and Tom and Shirley Houston were the first to commit to help fund the annual meeting. Joe Davidson, KSJ, and wife Rose Marie were the first to mail a check as soon as they heard about the enhancements being planned. We could not have this annual meeting without these funds given by the above members and all those who have donated since that time. The members have been very generous in donating money to be used spe-cifically for enhancements of the annual meeting. All those contributing will be listed in the program at the An Evening to Remember banquet. There is a form in this issue if you wish to be among those contributing to the FUNraising efforts for the 2014 annual meeting. All contributions are greatly appreciated. Many people will be honored at both the luncheon and evening banquet for the extraordinary service that they have given to the SRT and the State of Texas. You will get to meet and personally thank those who have worked throughout the year to meet the goals set forth by the SRT. For those who have not attended an annual meeting, a schedule of the events as well as the honors and awards to be given follows.

SCHEDULE FOR APRIL 4 TO APRIL 6, 2014 FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2014 - Arrive early and take the 2:00 p.m. “This Hallowed Ground” tour of the Alamo from the southwest corner around the outer walls and back to the church that will be conducted by members of the Alamo Chapter. The FIESTA LUNCHEON: a/k/a the Summerfield G. Roberts Award Luncheon begins at 12:00 noon. Women are encouraged to get in the fiesta spirit by wearing colorful dress or fiesta attire. The men may also wear fiesta attire, if they wish, but officers and award recipients are encouraged to wear the SRT navy blazer and gray slacks for the photos that will be taken. The purpose of the $2,500.00 Summerfield G. Roberts Award is to encourage literary effort and research about historical events and personalities during the days of the Republic of Texas, 1836-1846, and to stimulate interest in that period. The judges will determine which entry best portrays the spirit, character, strength and deeds of those who lived in the Republic of Texas. The Educator of the Year will be announced at this luncheon. This is to reward a teacher or school administrator in an accredited public or private school in Texas whose efforts have promoted the study of the his-tory and heritage of Texas. These awards are sponsored by Dale Williamson in honor of his ancestor, Judge Robert McAlpin Williamson, a/k/a Three-Legged Willie. Williamson County was named after Judge Williamson. The William Gordon Bachman Award is

presented each year to the chapter that has experienced the largest percentage of growth during the calendar year. hospitality room will open for a short time after the meeting. SATURDAY NIGHT - We are planning a memorable evening for our SRT members, friends, family and guests. From 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. there is a cocktail hour (cash bar) giving everyone a chance to visit before the banquet. Starting at 7:00 p.m. is our AN EVENING TO REMEMBER BANQUET. At this annual banquet, members will have a chance to thank our outgoing officers for their service and congratulate the new officers for the 2014-2015 year that will lead SRT into the future. Honorary members to be introduced by President General Hanover, KSJ, are Dean Bass from Conroe, Texas, Chairman of the Board of Spirit of Texas Bank and Craig Cam-pobella of Conroe, the creator of the Conroe Historic Flag Park. Awards to be given by President General Hanover are the Distinguished Service Award which is bestowed on one or more members who have exhibited their devotion to Texas and the SRT by their dedicated service. The District Representative of the Year Award is to publicly recognize the great work of a District Representative. This honor is based on the documented actions of the individual. The recipients of the awards are those who have devoted untold hours of work on behalf of the SRT and the State of Texas. Sunday, October 27, the first wreath ceremony was held in the Capitol rotunda honoring Stephen F. Austin’s birthday on November 3. A large crowd showed up along with three television crews. This we credit to Byron Weber’s excellent rela-tionship with these people. A detail of about 20 Ross Volunteers from A&M carried the wreaths to the rotunda and each of the presenters carried their wreath under a sabre arch. The wreaths were placed around the white marble statue of Stephen F. Austin by: Karen Thompson (past president of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas), Scott Dunbar (past president of The Sons of the Republic of Texas), Joe Davis (president of the Former Texas Rangers Association, John Wiley (Alamo Defenders Descendants Association), John Knox (District Rep. for The Sons of the Republic of Texas and San Jacinto Descendants), Michael Young (Descendants of Signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence), and JoAnn Hendrick (Austin family member).

A good time was had by all and the crowd was very courteous throughout the presentation. We would like to express our appreciation to Senator Troy Frasier for sponsoring the event. The capitol security was very helpful and understanding of this new event....God bless Texas.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN WREATH CEREMONY

DECEMBER 5, 2013O. Scott Dunbar, Chairman Presidio La Bahia CommitteeThe Sons of the Republic of Texas

Dear Mr. Dunbar:Thank you for honoring me and my book, Frontier Naturalist: Jean Louis Berlandier and the Exploration of Northern

Mexico and Texas, with the Presidio La Bahia Award. I intended to be present at the ceremony this Saturday, December 7, at the Presidio La Bahia to accept the award in person, but unfortunately inclement weather, namely an ice storm and snow in Oklahoma and Texas, will prevent me having the pleasure.

I wish to thank the Presidio La Bahia Committee for recognizing the life of Jean Louis Berlandier, who I have come to know, vicariously, during the past ten years. Berlandier was an inquisitive, courageous scientist and explorer who was capti-vated by the inherent beauty of the Gulf Coast and intrigued by the incredible variety of the flora and fauna found in Texas. He was also a sensitive observer of the peoples of Texas: the Tejanos, Americans, Comanches, Apaches, and many other tribes that were indigenous to, or had immigrated to, Texas. Berlandier’s many writings and extensive collection of natural and human artifacts, as collected and preserved by the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University’s Grey Herbarium, and Yale University’s Beinecke Library, provide an extensive repository of the natural and human history of early nineteenth-century Texas.

I wish also to thank the Presidio La Bahia Committee for recognizing me as a historian and biographer who tried, I believe successfully, to recapture the life and experiences of Jean Louis Berlandier. I first learned of Berlandier when I was research-ing, writing, and editing an encyclopedia of American discovery many years ago. I wanted to include some Mexican and Spanish scientists in my encyclopedia, and learned that Berlandier, a native Frenchman who immigrated to Mexico, was one of the best naturalists of his time. As I researched Berlandier, I discovered that few people had written about him, that his works exist mostly in manuscript form (in Spanish and French), and that he is largely unknown today. I have always enjoyed retracing the lives of explorers and scientists in early America, and my interest grew in trying to learn about, recapture the journeys and writings of, and portray through a narrative history, the life of this fascinating man. It took me several years to research and translate Berlandier’s journals of his travels throughout Texas and Mexico in the 1820s, 1830s, 1840s, and 1850s. These journals formed the basis for my book, which is largely a narrative account of the many journeys this scientist took in a largely unknown part of America. I am glad that the Committee found the book rewarding.

Again, I appreciate very much this honor bestowed upon me, and only regret that I cannot join with you on Saturday to celebrate The Sons of the Republic of Texas and Jean Louis Berlandier.

Best Wishes,Russell M. Lawson

BATTLE OF CONCEPCIÓNThe battle of Concepción on October 28, 1835, was the opening engagement in the siege of Bexar. After the skirmish at

Gonzales on October 2, the Texas army of 400 men under Stephen F. Austin advanced on San Antonio. Gen. Cos, with a Mexican army of 750 men, fortified the plazas in San Antonio and the Alamo mission (San Antonio de Valero) across the river. On October 27, Austin ordered James Bowie and James W. Fannin, Jr. to lead ninety men from Mission Espada to locate a protected position closer to the town. They camped near Mission Concepción. Gen. Ugartechea with 275 men and two cannons attacked them before dawn. As the attack ensued Bowie moved a Company up to meet the advance. Andrews fell mortally wounded and the Texans responded with accurate rifle fire that drove back three Mexican charges. Austin and his other troops rushed to the field when they heard firing, but arrived too late. Mexican losses included fourteen killed and thirty-nine wounded, some of whom died later. Texas losses included one killed and one wounded.

This historical marker honors Richard Andrews [1797-1835] on the battle site near Mission Concepción. He was killed in the battle of Concepción and was the first man to die in the Texas Revolution. Andrews County was named in his honor in 1876. Andrews the county seat is also named for him.
