Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

INSANE!

Prices Subject To Change On Market Fluctuation

It’s this Moment

Comes a time on Christmas Eve

When all the gifts are bought

And wrapped and tied with shiny

Bows and placed beneath the tree.

Shops are closed,

Locked up tight.

Even merchants hurry home

On this enchanted night.

A glass of wine perhaps a kiss

Beneath the mistletoe.

Evening fades as night begins

And children dream of gifts.

Late that night stillness comes

Magic spills over the land

As every creature of the earth

Feels the promise of The Son.

Humblest home and greatest hall

Are wrapped in a mother’s love.

It’s this moment I hold most dear

When peace fills the hearts of all.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDSCOTIA – Compassionate and caring individuals needed to assist in providing care for the dying. The Joan Nicole Prince Home, a community home for the terminally ill, is looking for individuals wanting to “make a difference” by caring for ter-minally ill residents who lack the support and options to re-main at home during their final days. SEARCH & RESCUE

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

CAPITAL DISTRICT – North-east Mobile Search and Res-cue (NEMSAR) is looking for a few good women and men to join our team. NEMSAR is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, all volunteer search team locat-ed in Clifton Park. We search for lost people of all ages working with the NYS Police, County Sheriff, Local Police, Fire Departments, and the NYS DEC Forest Rangers. A love of the outdoors is a must for interested volun-teers and we will provide all of the additional training to help you become a mean-ingful part of our search team. Also, if you’re not up to working in the woods we have several team positions that support our searches to include Radio Communica-tions, Logistics, Equipment, and Vehicle Maintenance.

SCOTIA-GLENVILLE FOOD PANTRYSCOTIA – The S-G Food Pantry, located at the City View Church, 132 Mohawk Ave., Scotia, provides a 3-day supply of food to residents of Scotia-Glenville. Pantry is open Tuesdays 5:30-7:00pm and Fridays 9:00-11:00am. Information: 399-9426, ask for Janice Cooper; or call Tim Horn at 377-0372.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots orga-nization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsFo-rOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected].

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

As the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more ex-pensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves fi nancially come the holiday season.

According to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercussions for the rest of the year.

In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch them-selves thin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to make shopping more man-ageable is to establish spend-

ing limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Discuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday sea-son. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each per-son will spend on gifts. If nec-essary, ask everyone to write down a fi gure and then deter-mine the average, using that fi gure as your spending limit.

Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to aff ord their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and

budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is estab-lished, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot aff ord to do so.

Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest going on vaca-tion together to make better use of your collective funds. A well-timed extended fam-ily vacation in lieu of gift ex-changes may alleviate the stress of the holiday season, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each person to work with can make for a more peace-

ful holiday season by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shopping.

Though there is no official data that declares the best-sell-ing holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its

stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been re-incarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001),

Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indi-cated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

Parents often fi nd them-selves waiting in long lines to snag the hottest toys for children’s holiday gifts. Shoppers arrive at retail stores in droves to grab the newest video game con-soles or must-have dolls or action fi gures.

From Cabbage Patch Dolls of the 1980s to the Elmo craze of the 1990s, every generation seems to have its own “must-have” holi-day gift. This year, holiday shoppers may want to start shopping early if they hope to land any of the following items that fi gure to be this year’s hot toys.

• “Frozen”-themed toys:

Mega-retailer Walmart pre-dicts that toys inspired by the smash hit fi lm “Frozen” will continue to be hot com-modities this holiday sea-son. To meet demand, the retailer already is stocking up on the popular char-acters and other products banking on the popularity of the fi lm. If the special girl in your life is still enamored with all things “Frozen,” it’s a smart bet to start your holi-day buying early this year.

• “Hunger Games” athletic items: Fans of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, be it the books, movies or both, are familiar with lead character Katniss’ prowess with a bow

and arrow. Bows inspired by the movie are in demand and will appeal to both girls and boys testing their ar-chery skills.

• Beats by Dr. Dre: Music-lov-ers still consider these head-phones must-have items. They’re especially prevalent among the teen market. Available in a variety of col-ors, users can coordinate their Beats headphones with their clothing or accessories.

• Lego Minecraft: It was only a matter of time before Lego got in on the action of one of the hottest games to sweep the Internet and video game console world. Minecraft is a digital building game that has enthralled gamers of all ages. Now Minecraft enthusiasts can recreate on-screen worlds in tangible Lego versions.

• Xeno: Xeno is a “friend-toy” that is neither robot nor doll, but an interactive pet. Made from nontoxic elastic material and including eight sensors, the creature is a moving, reacting compan-ion. Xeno even can dance to music. And parents will love that Xeno does not need to be taken for walks.

• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: On the heels of sum-mer blockbuster inspired by these gifted turtles, fans of the weapon-swinging shelled warriors will certain-ly want to surround them-selves with all things turtle, so expect to see plenty of movie-inspired gifts on store shelves this season.

The holiday season is on the horizon, and it’s never too early to begin shopping for the toys and games experts predict will be this year’s must-have items.

Certain gifts are standard fare come the holidays. Adults of-ten receive clothing while kids typically get toys. But shop-pers who want to employ the element of surprise this season may want to consider travel-re-lated gifts to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones.

Many people cannot aff ord to travel. Gifting travel enables couples or families who may not have the means to get away to hit the road in style.

When giving the gift of travel, shoppers should consider gift certifi cates or vouchers that can be applied to fl ights or lodging. Many travel busi-nesses and websites now off er gift registry services that make it easy for shoppers to pay for getaways for their loved ones. Some travel agencies also in-centivize travel gifts by off er-ing coupons or discounts to shoppers who purchase travel packages for friends or family members.

Those on the lookout for travel-inspired gifts can explore the following options.

• Airline gift certifi cates: A gift

certifi cate makes it easy for travelers to book their own fl ights at their leisure. These certifi cates typically can be ap-plied to any fl ight the airline off ers and may even be trans-ferable.

• Frequent fl ier miles: Find out if your frequent fl yer miles can be deposited directly into your loved one’s account. Later on he or she can redeem the miles for a desired fl ight.

• Luggage: Frequent travelers may appreciate new luggage. Monogrammed tags can help make luggage easy to identify at luggage carousels in crowd-ed airports.

• Small ship voyages: Some cruise lines off er working vaca-tions, where passengers par-ticipate in some of the respon-sibilities aboard the ship. These voyages are ideal for someone who enjoys being active and a part of the travel experience.

• Scuba lessons: Travel enthu-siasts who frequently jet off to tropical locales may want to learn to scuba dive, which means they must be certifi ed after taking lessons. Foot the

bill for those lessons so their next water adventure is com-plete.

• Traveler’s checks: Sometimes the best gift is the simplest one. Traveler’s checks may seem like

an outdated notion in the era of credit cards, but they’re still available. Banks and credit card companies are the best place to fi nd traveler’s checks. These checks are safer than bringing cash along on a trip because

they provide travelers with protected purchasing power for the duration of their trips. Prepaid gift cards also can be used for travel. Just confi rm that the card is accepted by re-tailers at your loved one’s travel

destination.

Travel gifts can bring smiles to the faces of your loved ones. These unique gifts are a novel-ty that’s not often found tucked under the tree.

Holiday shopping may be done, but that enormous pile of presents still needs to be wrapped.

People have varying de-grees of ability with regard to wrapping gifts. Some ex-cel at those creased corners and perfect bows, while oth-ers are less adept at wrap-ping. The task of wrapping gifts may not be something to look forward to, but wrap-ping gifts is an essential ele-ment of the holiday season. Fortunately, there are a few tricks of the trade wrappers can lean on to make the pro-cess of wrapping gifts go as quickly and as smoothly as possible.

• Stock up on double-sided tape. Wrapping with dou-ble-sided tape helps you avoid unsightly tape lines and creates a neat fi nished product.

• Use a toilet paper tube to preserve wrapping paper rolls and keep them from unravelling. Simply cut the tube lengthwise and snap it over the open roll of pa-per to serve as a handy clip to keep the paper tidy.

• When you lose the edge of the tape on a roll, it can take precious time trying to fi nd it again and then lift a piece of tape off the roll. Use a plastic bread clip to hold the place of the edge of the tape to prevent this from happening.

• Turn snack containers into handy gift wrap options. Empty potato chip cannis-ters can be wrapped and used to hold other food gifts

or smaller stocking stuff ers. Turn a foil-lined chip or pop-corn bag inside out, fi rst cleaning away any grease and crumbs, and use the bag to wrap a gift and tie off the end with a decorative ribbon.

• Wooden spoons or pop-sicle sticks can make clever gift tags. Poke a hole in the

end and tie onto your gift.

• Use a piece of fabric to wrap a present if you’re not too skilled with traditional paper. Fabric can be reused and is more durable, and

you won’t run the risk of tearing an edge or poking a hole through it. This can be especially useful for oddly shaped gifts.

• Newsprint tied with natural cord and some pine boughs is an inexpensive, classic-looking gift wrap.

• Kraft butcher paper or brown mailing paper can be used in a pinch. Stamp images on the paper to customize the gift wrap and use ribbons and bows to further dress things up.

• Always work on a hard, fl at surface, as working on the fl oor or a soft surface makes it more diffi cult to control wrapping paper and you’re more likely to tear the paper.

• Use a gift box or card-board to create a fi rm con-tainer to wrap soft gifts.

• Reuse old boxes to cre-ate a greeting card. Use a piece of ribbon and a

bow and your newly cre-ated card as a thank-you or gift tag for future gifts. This is a great way to recycle dur-ing a season when excess is common.

SCHOOL-AGED VISION

by Lawrence Cusma, OD9 Gleason Road

Scotia, NY 12302

EYES ON HEALTH

For further information, call our office at 399-6368

It has been estimated that as much as 80% of the learn-ing a child does at school is through their eyes. Reading, writing, board work, and more and more computer work are among the visual tasks students perform daily. All parents want to see their child do well in school and most parents do all they can do to provide them with the best educational opportunities. But too often one important learning tool may be overlooked — a child’s vision. As a child progresses through school, they face increasing de-mands on their visual abilities. The print in schoolbooks becomes smaller, and the amount of time spent reading and studying increases significantly. And, adding the time the child spends on their phone, tablet and comput-er in addition to their schoolwork, it is small wonder that the visual abilities of some students are just not perform-ing up to the task. The most common vision problem is nearsightedness or myopia. However some children have other forms of refractive errors like farsightedness and astigmatism. Because their vision may change frequently through the school years, it is extremely important that a child receive regular eye and vision care from an eye care professional.

DID YOU KNOW?Though laughter is often referred to as “the best medicine,” no defi nitive study has been conducted to determine the eff ects of laughter on overall human health, leaving open the possibility that maintaining a good sense of humor and a positive attitude are just as important, if not more important, than fi nding time to laugh each day. But even if laughter is not medicinal, its benefi ts can mimic those of exercise. When a person laughs, his or her pulse and blood pressure increase, and people tend to breathe faster when they laugh. Faster breathing sends more oxygen to the tis-sues, which can help the heart and lungs work more effi -ciently. In addition, a Vanderbilt University study found that between 10 and 15 minutes of laughter can burn as many as 50 calories. Finding time to laugh may also indirectly improve the body’s immune system response, as studies have suggested that infection-fi ghting antibodies might be more abundant in people who can use humor to com-bat stress.

The housing market has begun to heat up thanks to an economy on the rebound. Few people aspire to rent for life, and home ownership is a dream shared by both natives and immigrants who came to the country seeking a better life.

Each year the National Association of Realtors compiles a profi le of buyers and sellers that documents trends in the real estate market. Although the majority of fi rst-time home buyers identify as white, the next largest group are Hispanics, who account for 11 percent of the market of fi rst-time home buyers.

The rapidly growing Hispanic population is infl uencing all areas of modern living, including real estate. Estimates sug-gest that, between now and 2020, Hispanics, the second largest ethnic group in America, will account for 50 percent of new home buyers.

Over the last three decades, two of every fi ve newcomers to the housing market were Hispanic, according to the Na-tional Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. In addition to needing assistance fi nding their dream homes, Hispanic buyers also may need help securing loans to fi -nance their upcoming home purchases.

Just this year ezDinero.com launched a multinational on-line alternate lending solution that helps fi rst-time borrow-ers connect with top experts who specialize in personal loans. The company works directly with the Spanish-speak-ing market and serves as a mediator between lenders and borrowers. The service is one of the few reputable online companies that can help fi rst-time borrowers fi nd fi nancial solutions that meet their exact specifi cations and connect them with the top lenders in the industry.

Marina H. Gonzales, Director of Public Relations at ezDinero, states that there is a need for this type of bilingual service for the Spanish-speaking audience, which is underserved in the United States.

“ezDinero was created with the intent of giving the Span-ish-speaking population an opportunity to meet their per-sonal lending needs, especially for fi rst-time borrowers,” Gonzales said.

This alternative lending solution is not the only option available to Hispanics. Some people fi nd success through government assistance and grant programs geared toward the Hispanic community. The National Association of His-panic Real Estate Professionals can be an excellent resource

SALES DEPARTMENTSALES DEPARTMENT‘S

Transportation can be easily overlooked when couples plan their weddings. Couples may recognize they may have to hire a car or limousine to get them to their ceremonies and then their receptions, but what happens when the limousine calls it a night?

While some couples immediately depart for their honey-moons after saying good-bye to their wedding guests, many build a day in between the wedding and honeymoon, giving them a chance to rest, take stock of their wedding gifts and fi nish packing. That leaves the question of how a couple will return home from the reception or get to the airport.

The best man may off er to drive the bride and groom where they need to go. But if the best man is from out of town, he may not have a chariot awaiting to escort the newly chris-tened husband and wife to the airport.

As a result, all members of the wedding party should discuss

their post-wedding travel plans in advance. Any person who

will be arriving in a hired car will need to make arrangements

to have their own vehicle available at the end of the wedding

or be able to call a taxi or car service to get a safe ride home.

Some wedding party members may decide to park a car at

the reception site or a hotel the day prior to the wedding so

they will have a return ride. It’s also a good idea to ask friends

or family members who are not in the bridal party for a ride

home.

Safety is an utmost concern after the wedding. Even if wed-

ding party members have a car available, no one should

drive when intoxicated. Couples may want to include the

phone number of a local taxi service in their hotel gift bags

just to be safe.
