Kingsdale Foundation School

is A SAFE SPACE At Kingsdale Foundation School we actively promote and support an ethos where everyone can feel safe and listened to and should something go wrong as at times it may, know where to go to for support or guidance and have a person to talk to who can be trusted. The school has an impressive support network, which includes an extensive pastoral team working with each year group, mentors, school counsellors, an art therapist, safeguarding team, links to outside support agencies and a staff cohort regularly trained in issues surrounding the mental well-being and safeguarding of young people. However, we appreciate that not everyone will always feel comfortable talking to a member of staff or may wish to speak to someone outside of school hours. For those members of our school community who feel they need support or advice or, wish to report a concern we actively encourage them to contact us on one of our confidential emails where a trained member of staff will be there to provide the support required:

Remember at Kingsdale we

do NOT tolerate:

Disrespectful Language

Invasion of Personal Space

or Breaches of Our No

Touching Policy

We demand that all members of

our school community

RESPECT

each other’s personal space and respect each other’s

choices.

Teacher Recommendation This week, Ms Mizzi recommends Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. 1981. Glasgow. The city is dying. Poverty is on the rise. People watch the lives they had hoped for disappear from view. Agnes Bain had always expected more.

She dreamed of greater things: a house with its own front door, a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect – but false – teeth). When her philandering husband leaves, she and her three children find themselves trapped in a mining town decimated by Thatcherism. As Agnes increasingly turns to alcohol for comfort, her children try their best to save her. Yet one by one they have to abandon her in order to save themselves.

Ms Mizzi recommends this book because of the raw depiction of how a boy loves his mother despite her self-destructive alcoholism.

Recommended to students in Key Stage 5.

Student Recommendation

This week, Kingsdale students can get stuck into The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne by Jonathan Stroud. England has been radically changed by a series of catastrophes - large cities have disappeared and London has been replaced by a lagoon.

The surviving population exists in fortified towns where they cling to traditional ways, while strangely evolved beasts prowl the wilderness beyond. Conformity is rigidly enforced and those who fall foul of the rules are persecuted: some are killed, while others are driven out into the wilds. Only a few fight back; two of these outlaws, Scarlett McCain and Albert Browne, display an audacity and talent that makes them legends. A compelling read. Recommended to students at all Key Stages.

Celebrating Diversity in Science Last week, all science classes learnt about the importance of diversity within the Science community. Students took part in special lessons that highlighted the past and future contributions of members of the LGBTQ+ community to scientific discoveries. Did you know that LGBTQ+ individuals played a big part in the development of robotic prosthetic limbs and also in the discovery of the Higgs Boson Particle? Students engaged with discussion very enthusiastically. They learnt, among other things, about Alan Turing, LGBTQ+ code-breaker and STEM hero, who was celebrated though a code breaking exercise in the week when the new £50 notes featuring Alan Turing came into circulation!

Honeypot Children’s Charity - Albatross House

In last week’s bulletin we highlighted the amazing work of the Cancer Research UK and their relentless efforts in improving the life chances of people living with cancer.

This week, we turn our focus to The Honeypot Children’s Charity, bringing so many smiles to young people and

their families.

Albatross House's associated charity is the Honeypot Children’s Charity and your support continues to make a

significant difference. It is a charity which provides support to young carers in the 5-12 age range who take on significant amounts of responsibility at a very young

age to help their loved ones.

Although still children, some of them care for up to 30 hours a week, 365 days a year, often single-handed. This responsibility can be very difficult for children to

manage and often has significant impacts on their emotional and mental health.

Many thanks for your continued support of the House Team in this regard, it really does go a long way. This

year is particularly special as the charity is celebrating its 25th year since being founded.

Below is a statement about the impact that Honeypot has had on one of these young carers' life in her own words:

Honeypot gave me a place to escape to; it was a place to reflect on my family life and get the support of someone being there. It gave me the space to grow and play and

learn about myself, and an opportunity to put myself first – Billie Marie, Honeypot Graduate
