THE PAINTED CHURCHES TOUR of Fayette County – 22 miles Maps - Available at the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce, The Painted Churches are in a tight cluster (relatively speaking) in southern Fayette County . The tour can easily be a day trip from Columbus . Enjoy the winding and rolling country roads and pretty scenic views . The term “Painted”
comes from the elaborate faux-finished interiors: gold-leafed, stone and polished marble columns and ceilings are actually finely-fitted woodwork . The paint which was mixed on site is still vibrant and bright even after all these years .
