1-1. SCOPE

a . T h i s m a n u a l d e s c r i b e s R a d i a c m e t e r s I M - 9 E / P D , I M - 9 3 / U D andIM-147/PD. It guides you, the operator, as you operate and maintain thisequipment.

b. Throughout this manual, Radiacmeters IM-9E/PD, IM-93/UD, andIM-147/PD are also called dosimeters. Don’t be confused by these terms,a dosimeter is a radiacmeter.

c. The IM-93/UD and IM-147/PD Radiacmeters are used to detect andmeasure large-scale radiation, e.g., a nuclear contaminated area. TheIM-9E/PD Radiacmeter is used to detect and measure small-scale radiation,e.g., a laboratory environment.

1-4. DESTRUCTION OF ARMY ELECTRONIC MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMYUSE

Evacuation, rather than destruction, is first priority, whenever possible. De-struction, when necessary, will be accomplished only upon the order of theCommander.

Each using organization and/or installation having custody of radiacmetersshould have a Standard operating procedure (SOP) for radiacmeter destruc-tion. This demolition plan should be suitably flexible to cover any situation.Destruction method should consider troop availability, materials required, time needed, etc. Some of the methods used for destruction are smashing, exploding, and burning (with manual) after demolition.

● note the position of the shadow(hairline) on the calibrated(reticle) scale.

● determine the amount of radia-tion detected.

2-6. DETERMINING THE RADIATION DOSAGE

To figure out how much radiation you were exposed to, just subtract yourinitial reading (taken before you use the dosimeter) from your final reading(taken after a certain exposure time, i.e., month, day, hour, etc.).

2-6. DETERMINING THE RADIATION DOSAGE - Continued

NOTE

In some instances, you will have to estimate your readings, as inthe previous example where the shadow (hairline) fell betweentwo markings. Since each marking equals 20 RADs, the valuesbetween the 100 RAD mark and the first mark following has arange from 101 to 119. Because the shadow falls approximately inthe middle, the value is about 110 RADs.

2-7. ADMINISTRATIVE STORAGE

a. Check TM 740-90-1 for general information about the requirementsand procedures for administrative storage.

b. Although this general information does apply to dosimeters, you mustalso follow some additional procedures for proper storage of dosimeters. Before storing, charge dosimeters to zero. After removing from storage, check to see that the dosimeters are fully charged at zero; if not, charge tozero.

c. Before the dosimeter is placed into administrative storage (1 to 45days), it should be cleaned, charged, and packed in a paperboard carton.Place the packaged dosimeter in a sheltered area away from any knownradiation source.

2-8. PACKAGING-PACKING REQUIREMENTS

Inspect the dosimeter for damage that may have occurred during shipment.

CHAPTER 3MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Section I. TROUBLESHOOTING

This manual does not list all possible malfunctions that may occur, or alltests or inspections, and corrective actions. If a malfunction is not listed, notify your supervisor.

Malfunction, Test or Inspection, Corrective Action

Leakage rate exceeds acceptable values (para 1-6b).Check electrical leakage rate, recharge, and clean.

If the leakage rate exceeds the acceptable standards, clean thecharging end of the dosimeter. Recheck the leakage rate. If theleakage is still higher than the values in paragraph 1-6b, the dosimeter isdefective and should be turned in for a replacement. Perform leakagetest according to steps in paragraph 3-2.

Section II. MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

3-1. INTRODUCTIONMaintenance on your dosimeter consists of cleaning, decontaminating, test-ing, and troubleshooting. You will extend the useful life of your dosimeterby carefully following these procedures.

3-2. LEAKAGE TESTYour dosimeter’s charge will gradually leak off, even though the dosimeteris not exposed to X- or gamma-rays. This leakage, if excessive, will cause animproper reading on the dosimeter.

NOTE

If your dosimeter has not been charged for more than one month(or has been stored uncharged) or for an unknown length of timeand is then fully charged, excessive leakage may occur due toINSULATION SOAK-IN (penetration of part of the charge intothe insulation). Do not perform a leakage rate check on the do-simeter until it has been charged-to-zero each day for five con-secutive days. Ignore the daily leakage.

3-2

Page 41: TM 11-6665-214-10 OPERATOR’S MANUAL ... No. 1 TM 11-6665-214-10 C1 HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY Washington, DC, 15 May 1988 OPERATOR’S MANUAL RADIACMETERS lM-9E/PD (NSN

3-2. LEAKAGE TEST - Continued

The leakage rate should not exceed 2% of full-scale reading per day (see para1-6b for maximum acceptable leakage specs). Check the leakage rate asfollows:

a. Charge the dosimeter using Radiacmeter Charger PP-1578A/PD to read0 on the calibrated scale.

b. Store the dosimeter in a radiation-free area for a 24-hour period.

c. Note the reading on the calibrated scale of the dosimeter. This readingrepresents the leakage rate in either RADS/ROENTGENS or millirads/milliroentgens per day.

NOTE

If one day’s leakage rate is difficult to determine, the chargeddosimeter may be allowed to sit for several days until a readablevalue is obtained. To determine the average daily leakage rate, divide this value by the number of days the charged dosimeter sat.

3-2. LEAKAGE TEST - Continued

d. If the leakage rate exceeds the maximum acceptable rate (para l-6b),clean the charging end of the dosimeter.

e. Recheck the leakage rate. If it is still greater than the values in paragraph 1-6b,the dosimeter is defective and must be turned in for a replacement.

3-3. REPAIR

There is no repair authorized at operator level. If your radiacmeter is defec-tive, refer it to your unit commander for possible evacuation to higher levelof maintenance.

3-4. CLEANING AND DECONTAMINATING

a. Materials requiredThe following materials are required for maintenance of the dosimeter:
