A MESSAGE FROM I hope you enjoy reading about the impact of the many generous and voluntary contributions made over the last 12 months.

As you know, providing our students with new and exciting opportunities is an integral part of Blue Coat school life. This year funding has helped to support a fantastic array of projects such as chess club, outdoor table tennis tables, participation in national competitions and state of the art technology to name just a few.

These projects enrich the experience of many students by enhancing the academic and personal development opportunities we are able to provide. None of them could happen without you and your generosity – your many gifts of all sizes have a direct impact on what it is like to be a student at Blue Coat. Thank you on behalf of the students.

The Headteacher

Thank you for your support

Ways in which you’ve supported us this year…Development FundThe Development Fund was established to fund the ‘extras’ to ensure that we are able to provide the very best opportunities for our students: the opportunity to excel academically, to pursue extra-curricular activities and to exceed their potential. The majority of our supporters contribute to this Fund and we are grateful for your generosity.

Heritage & School Buildings Fund – Library AppealThe Heritage & School Buildings Fund raises funds to enable us to refurbish, renovate and preserve our beautiful Grade II* listed buildings and facilities to ensure that the school environment is fit-for-purpose for our current and future students. In 2015/16 we launched our first large-scale fundraising campaign to raise the funds needed to refurbish the school library. We are grateful to those that have supported this appeal in its early stages.

Corporate Sponsorship & GivingWe have continued to build relationships with local and national organisations, encouraging them to support the School financially by donating or sponsoring events and activities.

LegaciesLeaving a legacy provides a wonderful opportunity to support us in a way that might not have been possible during your lifetime. We thank those that have pledged to leave a gift in their Will and invite them to become a part of our 1708 Society to recognise their support.

Unrestricted GiftsWe continue to receive unrestricted gifts and are grateful to those supporters that give and allow the School to allocate their gift to wherever the need is greatest.

CHESS CLUB

What did we achieve in 2016/17?

NEW NETBALL KIT AND EQUIPMENT

2016/17 marked the most successful netball season in Blue Coat history, with four teams crowned Liverpool City Champions. A fresh sense of community and pride has been instilled amongst our players thanks to new netball kits purchased with funding from the Development Fund and with support from our Parents’ Association.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you to our Development Fund supporters and the Parents’ Association for their contribution. This is the first time our players have had a netball kit, and they feel incredibly proud to wear them. Having worked so hard last season a new kit was a perfect reward for them’. Miss Fitchie, P.E. Teacher

We are extremely grateful to our community of supporters who contribute what they can each year to the Development Fund. As a result of your generosity here is a snapshot of just some of the projects we were able to support in 2016/17:

“Prior to funding from the Development Fund we didn’t have enough pieces for everyone to play. We were using broken pawns and coins to replace missing pieces. Now we have enough boards and pieces to hold tournaments which is great!” Miss Long, Chess Club co-ordinator

“Without the Development Fund, this change of home for the Blue Coat Squirrel would never have been possible, and so I must give thanks to the Fund for allowing the magazine to be reinvigorated and reimagined in a new and dynamic fashion.” Joseph Murphy, Head Boy

ESTABLISHING THE SQUIRREL BLOG

With support from the Development Fund our much loved School magazine, The Squirrel, evolved into The Squirrel Blog. By taking this 63 year old Blue Coat tradition online, our editorial team and growing number of student journalists have access to an exciting platform, from which to share their writing.

EXPEDITION EQUIPMENT FOR THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH PROGRAMME

The Duke of Edinburgh programme remains the most popular extra-curricular activity at The Blue Coat School, with over 300 students taking part in 2016/17. Donations enabled us to purchase vital expedition equipment to loan directly to participants, helping to make the programme more cost-effective to run and ensuring its long term future.

NEW LASER CUTTER FOR DESIGN, TECHNOLOGY AND ART STUDENTS

Thanks to the Development Fund our Art and Design, Technology students now have ready access to the computer Aided Manufacturing process via a new Laser Cutter.

“Gold DofE was an amazing experience that was challenging both physically and mentally. It was an enriching trip that allowed me to develop a multitude of skills and helped me to build and strengthen friendships with others.”

“On behalf of the Art and Design Technology Department I would like to thank our community of Development Fund supporters for their generous support. By investing in this new technology our students have greater design f lexibility and the ability to create retail quality products.” Mr Ainsworth, Head of Art and Design Technology

Our Development Fund priorities for 2017/18

We believe in the power and value of education to change lives and change the world.

Our vision is to be able to deliver more effective and high quality learning, enhance the opportunities available to our students, and widen access to a Blue Coat School education. We will do this by providing the very best resources and facilities to enable our students to achieve their potential and ambitions.

How do we make sure that we make an impact?Throughout the academic year staff at the School are asked to submit funding bids for specific projects that meet one or more of our Development Fund priorities. All bids must be able to demonstrate specific outcomes for our current students. These bids are then approved by our Development Board which represents the School, Foundation, Parents Association and Old Blues.

We monitor these funds closely and find out about the outcomes of each project. This means that we can then report back to our supporters on the impact of their giving so that they can see how their donation is making a real difference to our students. As well as contributing to our key priorities for 2017/18, the Development Fund also gives us flexibility, so that we are able to contribute to projects at the School where the need is greatest, ensuring that funding always provides maximum benefit.

Our Development Fund continues to grow year on year, enabling us to provide more resources and facilities and more opportunities for our students. For 2017/18 the three key priorities for our Development Fund are:

1. HelpingtheSchooldelivermoreeffectiveandhighqualitylearning2. Making things better3. Widening access & enhancing opportunities.

• Throughout the academic year we ask staff at the School to submit funding bids for projects or equipment that meet one or more of our priorities. All bids must be able to demonstrate specific outcomes for our students – we want to make sure that every donation we receive is having an impact.• These bids are then approved by our Headteacher who has a clear strategic oversight of all sources of funding and activities within the school.• The Development Office then works closely with the member of staff leading on the project to monitor the funds and find out about the outcomes for each project. This means we can then report back to our supporters on the impact of their giving. Every year we produce an annual Giving Report which provides an overview of all projects supported and demonstrates the impact of all donations received.• As well as contributing to one of our annual priorities the Development Fund also gives us flexibility, so that we are able to contribute to projects at the School where the need is greatest.

Inspiring Futures

14 | The Blue Coat School Giving Report 2017

The vision for our new library is ‘to create a place where great thinking happens. A stimulating space to learn, study and collaborate, a place to be proud of our heritage and to inf luence the future’.

Library Appeal

We recognise that our current facility does not meet our students’ educational and extracurricular needs and in order to inspire the next generation of Blue Coat doctors, engineers, linguists, and scientists, it is essential that we provide them with a twenty-first century facility. Our new library will include:

- A full refurbishment including improved lighting and access- Increased capacity for students- Quiet study pods- Collaborative group work areas- Flexible book cases and seating- Investment in books, periodicals, journals and online resources- Investment in IT.

Our Library Appeal is our first ambitious, long-term fundraising campaign and we hope that parents, Old Blues and friends of the School will really get behind this campaign and help us in whatever way they can to raise these much needed funds.

Some images of what the new library could look like, created by Old Blue and architect Matt Waddelow from the Class of 2007.

Inspiring Futures

September 2016 marked the launch of our new careers programme, Inspiring Futures, led by Assistant Headteacher and Personal Development and Information and, Advice and Guidance co-ordinator, Ms Lynette Holland. We remain extremely grateful for the time and energy you put into inspiring our students.

If you would like to help our students explore their future career paths by sharing your skills and expertise we would love to hear from you. We host a variety of careers activities throughout the year, from our Careers Fair to university practice interviews, opportunities which are an integral part of ensuring all of our students receive high quality careers guidance.
