Top tips for the Recruitment Fair • Approach the employers in a confident and open-minded way and don’t forget to introduce yourself and find out

who you are talking to. • You should aim to spend about 5 minutes with them - although there is no hard-and-fast rule. Don’t monopolise

their time but don’t just say “hello” and grab the company brochure and free pens!

What should I talk to them about?

• The work itself. As a new recruit what would my day-to-day activities be? What would be the most challenging

or rewarding aspects of my first year? How would my workload change over time? What sort of induction

programme do you have for recent graduates? Would I be assigned a mentor?

• The workplace. Where would I be based? Is there a particular work culture that I need to bear in mind? Is there

the opportunity to work abroad?

• How they select and the skills and attributes they are looking for. Is there anything that I should stress to make

my application stand out? What qualities are they really looking for? What could I expect at an interview? Does

the organisation use psychometric tests? Will there be an assessment centre?

• Training and career development: What kind of support would I have in getting chartered status? Is there an in-

service programme of staff development?

• The industry and that particular organisation. Can you recommend any particular source of information about

the sector? (or this particular employer?)

• Ask about them as a recent recruit and their experiences. Is there anything you wish you’d known before you

applied? Have you any tips for a final year/year 2 student? Have you been able to use the subject matter of your

degree with this organisation?

• You can ask about salary and benefits but this information will usually be available on the company website.

Be careful of seeming to be only concerned about what is in it for you.

Finally…

• Don’t forget to thank them for their time and ideally leave them with your CV.

• Make notes on your conversation at the time and any information you discover to enhance your application (or

very shortly afterwards).

• Make sure you have their name because when you apply to that organisation you will want mention them in your

covering letter, “ I spoke with Greg Jones from ABC Co. at the Placement and Graduate Recruitment Fair at NTU

and he was very enthusiastic about the range of and variety of the work that new recruits can expect …. “

• If they give you their business card it’s an invitation to contact them and you should at least send them a brief

email to thank them and say how helpful you felt the discussion was.
